Basic public services shouldn't be subject to market forces, but with an average final salary pension of about £66k in the public sector & about 200,000 employees in the water industry, 1.4bn in dividend payouts LY look a cheaper tradeoff.

If the authorities wanted to, the water companies could be prosecuted: section 222 of the Local Government Act 1972 empowers local councils to prosecute individuals or organisations "for the promotion or protection of the interests of the inhabitants of their area"; Public Nuisance is a common-law offence and would normally be a police/CPS prosecution. Case law for both incudes prosecuting people for causing pollution. It just takes some individual in a position of power to have the cojons to take on the likes of Thames or Southern Water.

It shouldn't surprise you so much. It is a massive part of his life and, but this is armchair psychology stuff, a link to his father. I think he feels embarrassed when he admits to sometimes turning to religion, but I'm sure some voice nags at him when he says he DOESN'T believe most of the time. Of course, being raised in a religious household does not have to have this effect, but I can understand where JOB comes from. I share your puzzlement of feeling anything positive when people discuss acting on the basis of faith, mind you, but that is very much because religion has never been a part of my life. He encouraged them to think - to examine their most private thoughts. Truth is often something that we learn and discover. He was humble among men and women : he knelt and washed their feet.
