I'm with you, Winston. During my nearly 20 years in China, many rich people warned me about poor people - that they would cheat me if I treated them fairly. I found quite the reverse. Most rich people I knew were always cheating - almost like a sport or pathological compulsion. And the poor - like bike repair guys would often do little things for free! One time I actually haggled with a bike repairman - except I was pushing the price up and he was pushing it down!!

Damn straight. I worked at a Taco Bell in high school and there were three sisters they were older Hispanic ladies and they played zero games with peoples attitudes. And what they would do to the burritos of assholes almost makes you wish they just spit in it cause with saliva at least you can rest easy it’s basically water….but when you pop a zit into something, even though it’s minuscule in comparison to the amount of spit you could produce on command there is something about the solid nature of puss and compared to the more liquid state of saliva. And there is no knowing. At the drive through Mexican joint down the road from this Taco Bell I worked at they ended up on the news cause some employee was ejaculating into people burritos and yea that’s disgusting but I’ve wondered the past 10 years how that man was able to produce so much semen and how he got away with Uhm 😶 manufacturing(?) it.

China turned me into the worst possible version of myself when I lived there. You can't be nice. You just can't. The whole environment pushes you to disregard, and in my case, just despise everyone else. Hold a door for someone? As you said, everyone just takes advantage. You're the doorman now, and no one even thanks you. Need to get off the bus or the train because you're coming on your stop? No amount of polite asking will get anyone to move and inch. You have to start shoving people if you don't want to miss your stop. And that's just basic navigation. Never mind the constant scams people are trying to pull, or the terrible food safety.

I had a similar experience in Thailand while dating a girl from a wealthy family who was Thai-Chinese. She spoke perfect English and was beautiful, kind, and sweet (to me at least) and we got on great. She could have bought and sold me ten times over but it didn't seem to bother her and I really liked her until spending a few days in her hometown, Hat Yai. The way she treated people and her attitudes towards the poor really turned me off and it was embarrassing for me at times. We would pull up at a restaurant in her Mercedes and she would immediately get on the horn, demanding staff come outside and organise for other people to move their cars so we could park. She was just so abusive I couldn't believe it. One night we walked into a crowded bar and she started yelling at the staff, demanding they find a table for us and eventually a table full of locals were moved away so we could sit down; I was too embarrassed to make eye contact with anyone. Another time she had to pick something up for her father from a local factory. She pulls up next to the security booth and started yelling at the guard, and eventually after several trips back and forth the guard had delivered a bunch of small packages. I asked her why not just bring it all at once and she told me that she only asked for the items one at a time because people like him are too stupid to remember two things at once. The final nail in the coffin came when we were driving past some small rubber plantations. She explained to me that local farmers - at the time at least - were getting really good money for rubber and pointed out new houses they were living in and the nice cars they were driving. I thought that's great for the farmers, but it definitely wasn't an attitude shared by her. She explained to me how wrong it was that these, stupid, uneducated, lazy farm people could earn a good living, which made it difficult for her family to find enough workers for their factories, so they now had to offer better wages and conditions. She was utterly disgusted by these people making a good living. She really seemed to view them as human trash who only existed to benefit the wealthy.

I work in the service industry in America, I clean carpets in high end office buildings, I'm in the offices of CEOs and executives every night, sometimes they work late and I run into them. I have had amazing conversations with these people. They make 10 times my salary and they ask me about myself, my hobbies, if I like my job, if my pay is enough, they want to know if my company treats it's people well, and they are always appreciative of my work. They always thank me and most of them shake my hand no matter how dirty it is. I never feel like I'm lesser. Most people in America view each other as equal even if they make more and drive a nicer car. I used to do outside sales at my company and would network and go to luncheons and dinner parties all the time with wealthy executives and they were always so nice to the waiters and restaurant staff, they always left huge tips. And these are the supposed evil capitalists that look down on the working class

Here in the Philippines, there was this Chinese woman who went viral and got into local news years ago due to what she did. In our country eating food at the platforms and inside a our metro trains is not allowed. The Chinese girl at the time was carrying and eating Taho(a warm Tofu like snack) while entering the platform. A guard told her it was not allowed, the Chinese girl in rage threw the Taho at the guard. To make the long story short, due to what she did she was deported and ban from entering the country.

OMG! This is so true! My first visit to Shenzhen. My sister in law was nearly nine months pregnant at the time. We were waiting for the train to arrive. She told me, "Stand right there on the platform, and when the door opens you rush in and grab me a seat". At that moment I was actually standing at the platform, first in line thinking I got this. By the time the train pulled up, I was surrounded by pushing and shoving Chinese people of all genders and ages, pushing and jostling for position. Old ladies were trying to crowd me out. When the door finally did open up, it was tons worse than any Wal-mart Black Friday sale I had ever seen. I am not a small guy, yet those little people around me were friggin animals. They pushed me around like a little kid. And I didnt get a seat for her. Every person on that car (and it was packed full) noticed a pregnant women standing there, and could give two shits about. So after that, on the next train ride back to Hong Kong, same thing going in. Only this time I was bad ass Dick Butkus. I pushed and elbowed a clear path for her and got her a seat. I would hate to have to live my life that way. So long China, I have never been back.

2 experiences of dealing with Rich Chinese. My mother being assistant director at Eurotunnel and some high profile Chinese execs turning up - behaved like exclusive VIP and expecting nothing but Chinese food and be served. Me being assistant director for a summer school, and them rich Chinese kids and their assistants expecting full Chinese food catering and be treated like royalty - they had to be put back in their place, told they were students exactly like the other students, blend in if you don't like it, leave and go back to your country.

I agree 100%. I married into a family in which my husband grew up sleeping in one bed with 5 people in a house with a single room. They were humble back then. Fast forward 13 years from 1990 to 2003. They were now nuevo rich. They suddenly felt just fine treating workers horribly. It was awful. I was so embarrassed traveling around with them. I think it is also how they were raised and how one has perspective of the world too. My family been through lots of up and down in my country. Then when we moved to the U.S. We started all over but we always stay humble and know our root. Funny enough, we never want to dress stand out or deman for expensive food and eat whatever convenient to the family. I have seen many poor people who have become suddenly rich forget their past. Probably they think money is most important to do what you want to do in life and so tried to make money by taking advantage of others so they still do not care or take into consideration for others. The problem here with Myanmar generals who are now taking the leadership positions are the same too. Since they are rankers rising from privates, when they get power they mistreat their own staff because this is how they were treated before becoming to that level. When they get top leadership role, they think they are small god or kings and want people to worship them.

One relative knows a guy worth at least 65 million likely more and said you'd never realise. There's actually PILES of stories here of people worth millions getting kicked out of BMW dealerships. One guy and his brother owned huge coal mines. They wouldn't let him sit in a small BMW and kicked him out basically calling him poor because of how he was dressed. His and his brothers mines were valued that year for tax reasons. 274 million dollars.

My first exposure was a Turkish restaurant close to the Chinese embassy in Berlin. Sometimes you would see what I guess were embassy staff walk in, demanding to be able to inspect the grilled chickens just to then comment loudly in front of everyone that the quality was not to their standards and they left. When I was younger things like this puzzled me ... then I went to China... I have to add though that a two year stay in Hong Kong also taught me that you shouldn't really generalise. There were worlds in between Hong Kong and Shenzhen ....

I’m an American living in Thailand for the last 4-5 years. This is my second time living near Bangkok and I spent a year teaching in Seoul. Your videos are fascinating to me as I am a California licensed teacher who has taught online to Chinese students and been offered several very high paying positions in China. I’ve been intrigued, but always had a red flag in my mind about China. Thailand and Korea have similar cultural issues, many seem to be influenced by China. Yet, your stories make me really hesitant to consider China as a work option. Foreign teachers may not be paid as well here in Thailand, but the lifestyle seems much more laid back than the nonsense you describe happening in China. Being an immigrant is always a challenge and at times frustrating, no matter where you’re from or where you are, but China just seems to be a non-stop chore.

My sentiments EXACTLY!! I was going to teach in China, I mean complete with closing my business down at the end of the year and basically moving my whole world and life from US to China. This has completely changed my plans, because I know me, and between this and the spitting and the bumrushing masses, it's a no-go on that. My business and clients are happy that I am staying, though. I like my kindness, compassion, and lovely personality, I do not want it to change because I move to another country voluntarily. We saw a waitress crying the other night when my husband and I went out to eat. She didn’t want to tell us what happened but finally (after we bugged her) we found out that the rowdy guys that had been sitting close to us had skipped out on their bill plus they had harassed her the whole time they were there. She said her boss would take the cost of their meal out of her paycheck. My husband went and paid those guys check and gave her a tip on top of it. She was astonished that we did that but I have been a waitress when I was younger and in college. I hated it. It was the most thankless job I’ve ever had in my life. I know there are so many waiter’s and waitresses that are good at their job and love it but I absolutely hated it. We did that for the waitress because we wanted her to know that there are awful people in the world but there are also kind, decent people. I don’t care how much money I have I will never treat anyone less than. Not the janitor at the school and not the waitress in a sports bar. You should treat others with dignity unless they mistreat you or someone else. That lady crying at the car broke my heart. I wish I could give her a hug and tell her not everyone is hateful like that.

Here in Vegas I was working at a women's clothing store called Bebe in a tourist heavy area and was ringing up this Chinese tourist. Time to pay she threw the money in my face, I calmly picked up her money bill by bill and folded it neatly, walked to the entrance door and threw her money out into the crowd. Walked back up to her and told her she can leave now. I have a close friend that married a woman that Immigrated to the USA from Japan. He was on a visit with her back to Japan and encountered Chinese tourists while shopping. Several of these tourists attempted to cut in a long line to pay for items. The Japanese shoppers were allowing it as if it was normal. My friend is a typical New Yorker from Staten Island. Needless to say, the Chinese tourists were placed back in line. His wife told him later this was a normal experience and that the average Japanese have an acute disdain for Chinese tourists. She also stated that it was very normal for the wealthier Chinese to come to Japan to shop because they were seeking items in Japan that could only be bought in China as counterfeits.

Years ago I went with a Chinese girlfriend to Sears to help her find some furniture but no one was manning that area so I had to go find someone to help. After a bit of a wait someone finally came and I thought great, now we can get on with ordering what she wanted, but instead my girlfriend proceeded to lecture this low level employee for 15 minutes about our having to wait and the store not having the area manned. My friend told me an old Chinese woman walked up her driveway into her yard and picked tomatoes off her plants. That's literally it. They have no manners. They do not care about anyone else around them. I was just at the DMV in California two days ago and there was three lines to get in. A line for people with appointments, a line for no appointments, and a line for vehicle registrations only. Chinese mother and son came in and looked around.... And then just pushed their way all the way to the front of the line and the woman told the DMV person they were here for his driving test. The DMV lady told her Appointment? And she said no. The DMV person told her to go to the back of the blue line. The Chinese woman looked back, walked like three steps back with her son and just started trying to squeeze in the line and hahahahahahahah this sassy old black lady IMMEDIATELY said "UHHHHH HELLLLL NAAAAAAWWWW YOU GOTTA GO TO THE BACK, NOWWWWW!" and the Chinese lady just looked at her and turned back around BAHAHAHAHAH there's no way in hell that Chinese woman didn't know that what she was attempting to do was messed up, at the very least it should have been obvious to her, assuming she's been in this country for any length of time, HOW LINES WORK! I had no sympathy as she got yelled at by like ten different people because she wouldn't move and the DMV person finally had to intervene and went up to her and told her to get to the back of the blue line..... Well...... She saw the green line (vehicle registration) was WAAAY shorter so she got in that line. 😅 And at that moment the DMV person just looked over at the person in charge of registrations and told him DO NOT HELP THAT WOMAN SKIP THE LINE SHE'S PRETENDING TO BE DUMB OR SOMETHING 😂hahahahahahha had me dead and that's nothing, I recently went to Disneyland and in line for Space Mountain, a Chinese couple and their kids attempted to cut the line as well, just like nonchalantly trying to stand in front of people and they got yelled at, and then like ten minutes later the woman picks her kid up, PULLS HIS PANTS DOWN, AND SITS HIM ON A PLANTER AND THE KID STARTED TAKING A 💩 !!!!! It was a culture shock for me when I had to take a business trip to Shanghai and I saw the wealth gap and this mistreatment of people. I described it to friends as a high-tech 3rd world. Ferraris dodging bikes. 50 story buildings with entire sides covered in LCD panels running video and at the base, dirty toothless women with babies begging for money. And I am not talking about a couple. I am talking about hundreds of them and everywhere. I was staying at a really nice hotel. I arrived late in the evening so I dumped my bags and went down to the bar. I sat at a table by myself and watched stunned as every table treated the waitress like absolute garbage. Half of the people there were from Japan so I thought maybe it was a racial thing. After a couple weeks there I realized it was a Class thing and what I had seen was local businessmen showing their clout in front of visiting businessmen from Japan. No matter where I went I saw people with money treating people 'below' them like dogs. Whether it was shopping or bars or restaurants, the more nicely someone was dressed, the more unbearable they were to anyone they were interacting with. Treatment of others was bad as well. As was mentioned, it is almost a necessity to set aside a part of your humanity in order to function there. You have to push your way on or off subways or buses or you will never get anywhere. No holding doors for people. I held an elevator door for a woman and six more people pushed in. I had to take the next elevator and they didn't care. You have to be aggressive standing in line anywhere or people will just push in front of you. It was really sad. I loved getting to see the old gardens and ancient temples. However, once my business there was done, there was never a place that I have been more happy to leave.

I used to go regularly to a Chinese warehouse/store here in the UK ,and the staff were very nice and polite. Slowly over the years I saw a shift in the Chinese staffs attitude towards the English customers (Their business was mostly wholesale to take- away restaurants) So I stopped going. But recently a friend asked about it as she had never been, so I took her and OMG I have never felt so uncomfortable. We were totally ignored at the fish counter until we just gave up and moved away, then my friend asked another staff member a question and he gave a very curt and unhelpful reply...then called out very loudly (In Chinese) to another member of staff who looked at us and burst out laughing. It was horrendous and I will NEVER, NEVER step foot in that place again.........even if I was starving!!

I experienced some of this nonsense at Shanhai (ShangXi?) airport pre-departure gate. One of the children of the family in front of me had gone back to get a drink from a vending machine. The rest of the family got through, but the guard wouldn't allow the child through. The cutoff time was 12:00 and the child had arrived back at 12:01. The father was saying "Look, you can let him through. Otherwise it is a disaster for us. One of us will have to stay back with him, and we will have to rebook flights. For what? What is served?". And the guard stepped onto the raised kiosk so he was towering over the man and shouted at him: "I am the boss! You do not talk back to me!" It was a horrible situation, and the family was visibly struck by this cruel and needless ego-trip. I felt like a jew en-route to a concentration camp. Never again will I route any flight via China. I will not be a part of their sad power-play drama. Something is deeply wrong in that culture.

I was working in Egypt about 4 or 5 years ago going to new dig sites to get archaeological experience for my under grad. While I had some time off I went to the valley of the kings to experience the gorgeous tombs cut into the rock. My Chinese wife kind of warned me of the lack of manners in China before I visited. It was astounding. For instance, one thing I didn't know at the time and it really hit home was that, If somebody stops in the street in the UK, people will politely queue behind them. It's a very British thing. Something Brits are proud of. But in China, Queue at your peril. They simply don't know the meaning. First come, first serve. Push, shove, i'm before you. I felt that no one was aware of or had any respect for anyone else around them. The other thing was shouting "Foreigner!" (in chinese) at the top of their voices whenever I was spotted in a street. Something i've never experienced or ever done myself in any other country i've visited. Really strange and slightly annoying. As for the "wealth is power" thing. I have seen that a lot in a few different places. People just act like dicks because what else have they got to worry about. But generally, it is curbed in the west as 3rd parties tend to step in and give them a good hiding for behaviour like that. No longer does the "Do you know who I am?" thing work with these people because they could potentially be eating fist before the sentence is over. Disrespecting people of lower financial standing is just disgusting and scummy. Maybe that doesn't happen in the east.

@@faye891 I once told my wife i'd be prepared to live in China when I retired. I've since redacted that statement. I was in North east China. Majority of Chinese people are good (I guess much like any other country) but I was married there and a policeman was assigned to me. I was never told this would happen. I found the food to be a real mixed bag. Building Health and safety was non-existent during construction. No international internet. Government personnel were A-holes and totally unhelpful. Zero wildlife. No modern headache tablets! The local pharmacy told me to drink an infusion of some herbal rubbish and if it didn't cure my headache in 10 days, return and try something else. I really expected a few thousand years of amazing history but it felt very eastern european. It was an amazing adventure but not one i'd care to repeat. It just felt like a huge backward step.

@@shsu7426 It's strange and sad isn't it. These problems probably start with children's education and stick with them their whole lives because they don't know any better. Without labelling (and being to harsh to the average Chinese citizen) one might call them Uncivilised. But I feel that is because they simply have next to zero outside influence so it ends up in a self sustaining loop of weird and awkward behaviour to many people outside, looking in. What I find very odd is that just across the water in Japan, the absolute polar opposite in social behaviour occurred. As far as manners and etiquette go, I found Japan to be the most advanced on the planet in that respect. And I truly felt that if I could, i'd move to Japan with all of it's cultural complexities. Kind of my soul-country. My Chinese mother-in-law was amazed at the freedom our son had. She said in China, children are made to study dawn to dusk every day. And I can imagine it would mostly be false information about the west and how great Mao was. China is like the weird man that locks all the children in the cellar and tells them the world has ended.

From 1998 to 2001 I made several week to a couple months long trips to China for my job. I was testing software and computer systems that my company sold to Chinese oil companies and installed on site. The oil company execs had several banquets for us celebrating progress milestones during our work. I noticed the rude way waitresses and other low level workers were treated. The waitress were never thanked, even though they were very good at their jobs. I always said thank you in my best "cher shi" or "xi xer" Mandarin I could muster. I even spoke to them by their names when I could. I noticed the locals, especially the oil company officials, noticing my politeness. One of my American colleagues gave me a "stop that" look several times. I could tell the waitresses appreciated it because they were more cheerful around me than they were around the Chinese. The oil co. employees attempted to take turns "being polite" with me by going one-on-one with the toasts, "Ganbei". I don't remember the name of the liquor, but it was clear and to me it tasted like kerosene. I turned my shot glass upside down so that it would only hold a small amount of liquor in the concave well on the bottom. They told the waitress to turn it over before filling it. They were trying to get me drunk. She filled only the bottom well as I asked. I had already witnessed this one-on-one trick being used to get my colleagues very drunk. I held my ground and did not buy into their game. At the end of this particular banquet I spoke to one of the English speaking waitresses. I proposed a toast to the waitresses and cooks and invited all of the waitresses to participate (all at once). I took a full shot this time for them. The waitresses were very happy to have been included. To my surprise, and even more so to my colleagues' surprise, the Chinese (CCP members) oil company officials seemed to admire my gumption as they treated me with great respect later.

As someone who worked in the service industry during Covid-19 it was a little ray of freedom. First time ever I was able to tell rude customers that they could eff off and when they complained to corporate the managers did nothing because they were desperate for workers! It was a magical time.

You have solved a mystery that has haunted me for over a decade. I live near Yellowstone national park, very popular among the chinese, and whenever we travel and stay at nearby hotels there inevitably are Chinese tourists staying as well. I have had chinese vacationers steal Belgian waffles many times at the free continental breakfasts. I had just assumed they're super rude people without western boundaries. I go through the trouble of filling a cup with batter and pouring it in the waffle iron only to have someone swoop in and take my waffle as the timer goes off, and before I can retrieve it. Has happened dozens of times and had me perplexed, it even became a joke among family and friends.

The supermarket where I lived once had corn on sale at a very low price. They had to have been losing money on it. When I walked into the supermarket, I immediately saw a large crowd of Chinese people surrounding a large box of corn. They were pealing the husks off and throwing them on the floor. That was so that the corn weighed less and they saved a few pennies. It was such a disgusting site, that I just left the supermarket and went to another one.

I'm sure you can guess that during my 10 years living and working in China I came across multiple examples of this It is endemic. I also noticed that it was mostly practiced among the nouveau rich classes or by those who wished to give the impression that they had money. My students at the university were at first astounded when I explained that the two most important words in English are " Please & Thankyou" as they are hardly used in Chinese and are especially missing when talking to someone considered inferior in status to one's self.

One evening there was two rude Germans talking bs for a while and then complained why the bartender was speaking English in an Irish pup… I got to their table and said if they not go now willingly I will force them to leave. I'm glad this topic has come up. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I'm Kenyan, and we've had many Chinese relocate here to build these many projects they are doing all over Africa. Talk of open discrimination!! Some time back, some managers were deported after cases of violence against the African workers (captured on camera caning workers for being "late")... Another establishment was closed temporarily after open cases of racism against any black customer were confirmed (no entry for blacks, literally in the middle of Nairobi). Then some would walk around like we owe them a lap dance for getting noticed by them!!! They are rude and act like they own the president himself!! And treating their workers like the gum beneath their shoes!! The nice ones are the "poor" ones, maybe because they understand how wrong this entitlement is. But thanks for this video. This "emperor mentality" is a Chinese reality, sadly.

Where we see inequality and bullying, asia sees incompetence and "ideas over people- by those who deserve to decide"- yet never living up to their own skeletons at home and the fears of their own culture, and of their family. The let-up and kick they get from being powerful enables their deranged cruel behaviour, and the people take it out of fear, yet you can always talk these things out- ultimately, there are capable, empathetic people at most of the highest positions, and where there aren't, there also aren't any real issues, as the issue makers also don't have cover, and are protected mainly by their mouths. You can alwys push on them, and phase them out, and there is ultimately the ultimate limits of shit taking in the matter of public justice.

We spent 3 months in Wuxi building a manufacturing facility. We stayed in the International Hotel which was very nice. We witnessed a HUGE range of difference in how people treated the staff based on their nationalities. We were always kind, patient, talked to the staff, joked with them and eventually we had a core group that would attend to us solely. When we left, we had the entire wait staff gather around us, shake our hands, take pictures, and wish us well and it wasn't because we did anything different, I believe it was because we treated them well and respected them. I was proud to leave a good impact as an American.

I love that you included the video where the Chinese tourists were removed from the hotel. I live in Sweden and read about the incident. Swedish people know absolutely nothing abut China. It wouldn't surprise me if half the population doesn't even know it's not a democracy. When swedish people saw the unruly people rejected from the hotel, they figured they might have been drunk or mentally ill and thought nothing of it. When the CCP warned citizens of traveling to sweden, the swedish people was so confused. Such a culture shock.

Most do know how bad China is. The approval, rating and trust in China is at its lowest point ever. The official China/CCP BS is not liked by Swedes. The Confucius institutes were closed by Sweden, hardly any kids want to learn Mandarin in school anymore, there’s countless of articles in the media almost daily since many years about all the shit and threats China is doing. China and it’s embassy in Stockholm has threatened Swedish journalists and that is a matter of national security. The case of Gui Minhai (Chinese: 桂民海), the Chinese-born Swedish book publisher and writer who was kidnapped in Thailand by the CCP in 2015 and is kept in some dungeon in China, is an other huge beef Sweden has with China. Even the police in the short clip were laughing because the Chinese people acted so ridiculous, the Chinese turned up the wrong day and the hotel or hostel had to call the police because they refused to leave.

Actually that rings true in my experience. I took a Chinese friend to nice, hip restaurant in New York to show her an authentic local spot. She had a very expensive camera she wanted to show off, and started taking pics of people, got up and totally invaded their privacy. When a waitress politely told her to stop, she all but screamed at her, like yelling at a dog, insisting she can do what she wants. Pretty embarrassing! Luckily it was not a date. I was just helping a friend out, who had this person visiting from China…

I remember years ago I was on a flight to Korea on China Air and the flight attendant in my aisle was extremely hostile to me. I was really young and had never experienced treatment like that in America so I thought maybe it was something I did wrong. Whenever they would pass out the food or blankets that came with our flight I was the only one she skipped over. It was so bad that I couldn't hold back my tears. Eventually there was another passenger on the flight who noticed this as well so they got upset and complained on my behalf. Afterwards they sent a different flight attendant to serve me because the first one flat out refused.

The gas station attendant... As someone who has worked multiple frontline customer service jobs. I have both witnessed and experienced first hand what she went through. Seeing it happen to others always pains me like a dagger through my heart each and every time I see it. Even if i had shaq o'neal levels of money, I could never treat another person like that. Why cant people treat other people with a bit of love and respect. Some people are stuck on the ladder just trying to survive and make it through life on a small wage so they can feed themselves, their family and maybe rent. There is no need to bully them and make their lives harder. absolutely sickening.

I've experienced it working service in America, but I've always been able to defend myself with minimal repercussion. That's what makes the difference... having the ability to punish them with poor service and of your boss doesn't have your back, there are other service jobs.

Thanks for explaining general social dynamic. I am an oversea Chinese and I occasionally watch some Chinese dramas but I find the story plot points unrelatable. Stories evolves around wealth, power, face (and the flip side humiliation) plot devices were use with comically villainy. But ultimately, these shows are for a Chinese mainland audience and (however exaggerated) it must resonate/reflect their current society back to them. (There was a drama where the male protagonist trying to woo a young lady bought a luxury handbag. Later, this young lady was dismissed from her job because her boss saw this bag was a knockoff. That was so bizarre)

newer mainland china stories have a rushed/ template/ standardized feel to them, i guess it is result of guideline, remind me of robocop2 when the robocop cant decide anything because too many directive..while older stories from HK and Taiwan, have deeper layer to the stories.. Jin Yong, GuLong, even romance for women like Chiung Yao.. their story are unique that their estate can sue copycat and win.

I keep thinking about the new Velma netflix thing. I shudder to imagine the type of people this is supposed to resonate with. And judging by the huge amount of harsh criticism from a diverse and inclusive demographic, I think there might still be a sliver of hope for humanity. Now that I think about it..... there was also that "Jaden Smith anime" from several years ago. The show was terrible top to bottom. The premise had potential, but the writing just murdered it in its sleep. And of the few things that could be worth complimenting about the show, quickly fades away when you realize, by the creator's own admission, it was totally on accident. The term used to describe it was "vanity project". For all its short comings, James Cameron's Avatar was a passion project. Effort was clearly put into it, and even the weakest parts of it (IE the story) was cohesive with the whole. But with the Jaden Smith anime and Velma, there is no heart behind it. Its a series of "thoughts" by the creators, with next to no cognizance of the medium, the genres, or sometimes even basic literacy that surround it. Its why I suspect a lot of current hollywood writers, especially the ones that came out of large writing rooms, may had been able to function as part of a larger unit... but is so specialized in one area, they can't do any other element of story that it would normally be weaved into.

omg I am so impressed by how deep u knew about the Chinese thinking. Though my dad is a Taiwanese but he once worked in China, then kinda became like Chinese. So he likes to show off by scolding waiters, or maybe shouting, and feel being powerful by doing so I guess. Even when he was back in Taiwan. If you watch enough k-movies you'll notice that even among cops and in offices, the superiors will slap, hit, punch, spit, or kick their subordinates physically for the slightest mistake without any repurcussion. Hell yes, great vid and I couldn't agree with you more! I'm an Englishman but speak fluent 普通話 and that disrespect towards people performing menial jobs really got to me during my time in China. I've witnessed it many times. I've had a lot of great times in China but this part was not one of them. During my time in Japan I also remember how easily the rude Chinese tourists stood out with no manners whatsoever towards the staff, even shouting at them in Chinese when they obviously couldn't understand!! Based off the context of the original poster, he had no ill intent. I'm a blue collar worker here in Texas. If someone described my job as menial in nature that would not be incorrect, objectively speaking. The context matters greatly so try not to mischaracterize it by simplifying it.

I can relate to this. I met a Chinese girl a while ago and went on a few dates, she was always very sweet but then one time we went to an authentic Chinese restaurant and she acted horrible towards the staff. I ended it about 20 minutes after dinner.

I work in aerospace and there was a young Chinese man who was living and working in Kansas that worked in our office. I still don't know how he was allowed to work there. Anyway, he was what we considered upper middle class and even he was incredibly pompous. He couldnt wait to brag about every little thing he felt was superior. He told me, completely unsolicited, that he'd never driven himself anywhere until he came to Kansas. He drove 150 miles to buy sandals at a luxury store in KC and never cooked his own meals. He was under the impression this was appealing behaviour to Americans.

Thats how large the gap are between the poor and the rich. Most of the time through nepotism, the rich get richer and the poor get more desperate. The ethical issues between the moral compass of the people is really low if you go higher in the pyramid and also to the lower pyramid. Human degenerations, it's accumulated through this conjunction. I have had similar experiences. One time my granny cart was falling apart while I was walking in the NYC metro. Two very humble looking Chinese people (boyfriend and girlfriend?) saw my plight and rushed up to help me peice it back together. Conversely, while on a disney cruise I offered to take a picture for a seemingly wealthy young Chinese couple. They practically shewed me away like a fly.

I worked on a constrction site for a luxury resort off the coast of Australia. The catering was provided as we couldn't leave the island, dozens of Chinese workers were on the project doing the dry-lining. They were ultimately forced to have to eat last because any time they would be allowed to go to the buffet before other workers they would pile their plates so high with food & then never even eat half of it & waste it for everyone else. They would spit indoors and throw litter where ever they fancied; on the floor or straight into the ocean. Once a sea turtle swam into the bay and whilst everyone else was looking on in amazement, the first thing the Chinese workers did was hurl large rocks at it to try and kill it. I honestly don't know how a vast proportion of such a huge race can be such disgraceful human beings.

Great video! About 5 years ago my wife and I spent a few months traveling from coast-to-coast camping across the US. We spent some time in Yellowstone and besides the beauty of the place my wife and I were most struck by the rudeness of the Chinese tourists. We found that we were in a bit of peril walking on the wooden paths through the boiling mud pits due to the pushiness of these people. We both experienced it but didn't discuss it until we got back into the truck when we were both surprised to hear the other's comments. For a bit we wondered if it 'were just us' or 'did we really experience this' and - we did. During our travels we had marvelous experiences having met people from across the world. The Chinese tourists were 'another breed of cat'. I'm now in my 70's and knew many Chinese people while I was growing up - in school, in business, friends of my parents - but this was an eyeopening experience.

I was in Tokyo for the Golden Holiday Season. Before that, I was amazed with the level of hospitality, kindness and overall respect. People would literally gift me an umbrella when it rained and others would come run after me and hand it back, when I left it on the subway seat. All of that changed when the Chinese tourists arrived to celebrate for that one week. It was such a contrast. All of a sudden people bumping into me, cutting lines, shouting at waitresses. Puking on the train station on a regular basis. One would even try to start a fight with me because I jumped out of the way when they spit in front of me on the pedestrial. It was horrible. I made the same experience at the Milano fair event. They would push you aside, go into backstage areas as they pleased, threw all their trash on the ground and shamelesly took apart the kitchen furnitures on display. Then they took pictures of the insides, prosumably to copy the items for cheap. So rude. So rude.

Another story from my home town Berlin: I used to go to this Chinese restaurant late at night and sometimes it was full, sometimes empty. Nevertheless, the owner would always serve us gladly and kindly. They had this VIP section that was always empty. The kind of room where they have mirrors and those spinning dining tables for big bowls in the middle. Until one night there was Chinese costumers there. They would literally wreck up the place and throw at each other with drinks. Every 20 minutes or so you would hear a glass being thrown to the ground and through the slit of the sliding doors I could also see spitting on the floor going on. As the owner had always been kind to us, we asked if he needed any assistence throwing them out, to which he responded with a smile on his face and said: "Oh no, I don't mind the few bucks on glasses and the cleaning. They spend so much money on these stupidly overpriced bottles on the top shelf!" He meant the ones that no one ever orders, but you can always see 'em and wonder who the hell orders them. Moet Champagne, Henessy, Grey Goose Vodka, in those huge bottles. "They are buying it to impress each other and I make a fortune, so I really don't care."
