USA might have the most advanced democracy in the world, formally speaking, even with the drawbacks of a centuries long constitution. I'm not saying it is perfect but Spain is decades behind in terms of politics. Also, UK has a better political system, citizens can speak and demand stuff to their district representative. Meanwhile in Spain, we've got an oligarchic regime which inherits its main structure from the franquism era. We didn't choose the king, we were not involved in or even aware of the creation of the 78's constitution which should not be called constitution since it does not separate any powers, civil parties turned into state parties and basically absolute power is granted to the party or parties in coalition that win the elections.

@@sergiofueyosuarez2839 our politicians (the leaders of every party) betrayed the Junta Democratica and its original principles when they agreed that the king would succeed Franco after his death and there would not be any period of constituent freedom. Then Suarez govern legalized these parties and put them into the state (with the respective public financing) so they could no longer be a civil organization as they should be. So, in 1977 ordinary court elections were held (non constituent) and these parties agreed to create a constitution that was already being redacted in secret by a commission of representatives, as journalist Pedro Altares discovered (www.diarioerc.com/2018/02/20/una-oprobiosa-transaccion/). That Constitutional Court took a Catalan Statute approved by Catalan parliament, Spanish Congress, Spanish Senate and by the Catalan people in referendum... and decided that some of it was "unconstitutional", so the judges proceeded to butcher it a bit more (fuck accountability and the will of the people, 'cause this is Spain) The problem is that certain important judiciary organs in Spain simply aren't independent. The Spanish Constitutional Court is formed by 12 judges, 10 of whom are appointed by the government + congress + senate... What's wrong with this system? Well, when parties like PP (one of the most corrupt in Europe) get an absolute majority in both congress and senate (hence they also get the government), PP gets to appoint 10 out of 12 judges to the Constitutional Court... Political parties should NEVER get to nominate and appoint judges if the judiciary branch is to be called "independent"... much less when those political parties are a cesspool of corruption.
@nurianadal49805 жыл бұрын
@C R Um, okay, I see why that's how you read that, but it didn't happen like that. It was more a thing of one party (PP) taking it up to supreme court, that they themselves had appointed before losing seats in congress to PSOE, and then their judges mangling the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia. Big detail to understand all of that, is that a lot of the improvements that were being approved for the Catalan people are (and were even then, 2010) already approved for quite a few other autonomous communities (regions) in Spain. There is an undercurrent of dislike, and sometimes even hate, in Spain towards the different historical communities with different languages, especially Catalonia and Basque Country. The Basque Country, however, is not being punished politically and economically in the same way. They have a very different history and have had their share of unfairness dealt to them, in other arenas.
@Gabriel-hs9mv5 жыл бұрын
Nuria Nadal that’s bullshit. You either lie or are misinformed. The resolution dictated by the Constitutional Court on the Estatut was backed by the PROGRESSIVE majority in said court. That is to say, by the judges appointed by the Socialist government of the time. It is simply false, however widespread this lie might be, that the conservative members of the Court sought to overrule the will of Congress and the people. In fact, Conservative judges added PARTICULAR VOTES to said sentence, in which they stated that, in their view, and in the view of anyone with any knowledge and decency, the Law should be cut down A LOT more. And that’s because it should have been. It’s because the Estatut was overwhelmingly, painstakingly unconstitutional. It’s because our president of the time was a big fat arse who comitted to accept whatever came out of the Catalan regional parliament (!!!!!). Whether you support greater autonomy for Catalunia or not, you cannot modifiy the Constitution through a lower-ranking law, in this case a Estatut. They should have reformed the Constitution, then proceeded with their bullshitting on a regional level if that’s what they wanted to. Aaaaah, but 2/3 of Congress were required for that, aaaah, they no longer had a majority. If only. So they chose to take us into this huge mess. Because our politicians are idiots, and to be honest so is our whole country.
@danielmp20855 жыл бұрын
@@Goreuncle But thing is the new statute of autonomy was unconstitutional. It allowed Catalonia to have it's own judicial system like in a federal state (which Spain is not). And giving the catalan government the power to have it's own courts would be likd effectively giving them the right to secede since they would not prosecute their own when they (for example) organize an illegal declaration of independence. This statute should've never been approved by the constitutional court as it would violate the principle of power separation.

Sorry, but that's not what they're doing. It's really complicated and long to explain, I don't think you can really get a grasp in just seven minutes. The constant elections are not a good symptom, rather a consequence of a lot of different tensions that don't get solved (at all) by electing a few different people from several parties. There are parties (catalan) whose officials get banned, even. Nevermind they were allowed to present their candidature and were voted by the people. This is ignoring the people's will.

@MrMuminschanel5 жыл бұрын
I hope that CNBC has the decency to apologize for this insulting video and make it available to the universities so they can study what the fake news is. 1. The title of the video already invites confusion when talking about an "unstable Spain", although it can be considered that the parliament is fragmented that does not mean that Spain is unstable. the Spanish constitution endows this country with absolute institutional and political stability. 2. It is that constitution that makes Spain, institutions, regions, municipalities, courts, etc ... continue to function and not be affected by political fragmentation. 3. with respect to Catalonia! it is that same constitution and those same stable courts that managed to stop a coup in Spain in 2017. 4. When this video speaks of "a Madrid court declaring the referendum illegal", it is implied that it was an arbitrary decision because it is not explained that the court that prohibited the referendum was the constitutional court, the one in charge to protect and preserve the laws of Spain. 5. In the same way when it is said that the leaders of the referendum were arrested for organizing a referendum against the constitution, it is not said that it is that constitution that protects their right to be pro-independence nationalists, among other rights. 6. once again this video shows the little understanding that the Anglo-Saxon countries have of other countries of the world, which often have better democracies than theirs. espanaglobal.gob.es/en/current-news/society/spain-once-again-full-democracy-according-annual-index-economist 7. I expected the CNBC to follow the journalistic standards of investigating and contrasting information, but this video makes it clear that neither one nor the other has been done. 8. this video is a pure cut and paste of sensationalist headlines of badly informed newspapers and does not respond to the political and social complexiti of a country. this cheap "analysis" may only have come to light for two reasons: the first that CNBC is full of uneducated people and the second that they have done so wanting to hide the political and institutional instability that they suffer. As a lover of Spanish politics, I recommend that you inform yourself of the fascinating history of Spain, how advanced its constitution and its institutions are and how insteresting the political terrain is. thank you very much for reading the entire post

Spain might certainly not be the most focused on its policies, but I see a multi party system as a more democratic way of doing things. yes, it takes more negotiations to get anything done but at least this way the people can actually vote for policies instead of just partisanship, unlike the USA where people don't have any real choice, the leaders of their party decide what it is done and people has to vote for them just not to vote for the opposing party, also when any single party doesn't hold a majority in the parliament passing laws is not given for granted so lobbying becomes more difficult and so does corruption

@Channel you must be one of those poeple that is excited about having read a philosophy book for the first time. if you knew Plato's Ideas as well as you claim you would realize his proposal about the inadequacy of the masses for making rational decisions (hence why they shouldn't vote), is inaplicable in a post industrial society, his political ideas only make somewhat sense in the system of his time where there where no parties at all and the senate was just an oligarchy of wealthy land owners in an era where "might make rights" was the public discourse. of course it would be great to have a system that could evaluate weather somewhat is fit to take important decision but how could one go about implementing it without risking autocracy an systematic political alienation? at the end of the day what plato proposes is an ideal, in practice his system is particularly prone to corruption. for better or worse democracy is the best Idea of government we currently have, the masses might make decisions that ultimately doom us but at least since we all have the power to vote we can all each have some power over one's destiny. if you think your neighbor is going to doom you with his decision then get off your ass and convince him to rectify, if society won't see things your way be humble and vote with your feet
@hendrikdependrik18915 жыл бұрын
A bipartisan system is almost the definition of mob rule. What can be chosen with so little choice? A multi party system is giving people way more choice. Indeed, the way parties handle corruption is done way less spectacular, but tackling corruption in a two-party system is mostly replacing a corrupt member of the opposite party by a corrupt member of your own party.
@peterp40375 жыл бұрын
Multi party system exists in Sweden, finland, the netherlands and interestly enough in these three countries the far right wing parties are second most voted political force. YES, in scandinavia countries!. But hey Spain is unstable because for the first time in many years they have a multi party system. See where the negative bias about Spain is?. It seems Spain for whatever reason are not liked in that private club of accepted countries but then multi party system from scandinavia are seen as stable democracies but everybody will look the other way if far right wing parties are thriving in these countries. Am I the only one who thinks this is all racist bias about Spain?.

Wtf? This was published in 2019, and the crisis is from 2008, more than 10 years ago... you cant still talk of the crisis as a huge thing anymore. The unemployement rate isnt that high: You say 27% unemployement in 2015, but in 2019 (the same year of publication) it stands at 14,7% according to INE (almost reduced by half).... so its actually decreasing since spain is the country in the EU that grows the fastest at 3%not to mention that in places like the Basque Country or Navarre, the unemployement rate stands at 5% now and stood at 8% in the worst part of the crisis. You cant apply 27% to all areas of the country. So People, dont pay attention to this video, is a bit bias, the data are inacurrate and old dated.

Spain is so unstable because the political system shifts constantly from neo-marxism to socialism, depending on the ruling party (left vs right, respectively). Taxes are outrageous, with a 45% taxing bracket at 60,000 euros annual income and 30% taxes for an average Spanish salary . Salaries (average salary is 23,000 eur/yr) rank as the eighth highest out of 22 European countries; however, the average cost of living in a city like Madrid is 15,948/yr for one person living in a small apartment BUT this costs climbs up to 38,076 eur /yr for a 4 person/ family living in a medium apartment, which makes the costs of living unsustainable for one single working member in a family, on average. Morever, Spain has traditionally had a huge unemployment rate (14% at present) but keeps importing illegal immigrants from northern Africa with no qualifications whatsoever (and giving them more social benefits than any legal Spanish citizen, with no perspective for having a return to that "investment" in any near or far future). My personal view about why it has such an unstable political-economic situation is because the economy is highly state-controlled (resembling a communist system) and it does not adapt on time to the constant changes of the socioeconomic environment. Furthermore, this state control system deviates insane amounts of money and resources to services of no use for the national economy, promotes sectarianism (at regional level: e.g. catalunya, vasc country), perpetuates corruption and empowers local mafia-like individuals who make all possible efforts to keep on top of their pyramid by prevaricating over the ones below them. This mafia prevails at all levels that depend on these state funds (not only at the independentist institutions, but in economic sectors like health, transportation or fishing & agriculture). I lived in Spain for nearly 20 years. Thanks God I am out of there. Spain, like many other parts of Europe, is in my opinion doomed... unless they snapped out of their idealized socialist utopia. My advice to anyone thinking about going to Spain would be: only go there for tourism or for retiring, never for working or investing. This vídeo is very biased. First of all, the “unstable” nature discussed by the video is mostly backed by the situation in the 2009-2012 era, in which the whiplash of the 2008 crisis caused a lot of problems. However, I see the contrary. Despite the bad economical and social situation, Spain has continuously been improving its economy and social affairs as well as continuously lowering unemployment back to 2008/09 levels, even the Catalan initial upheaval has been reduced as negotiations are undergoing. There is also more representation of the people’s choice and voice in Congress due to the end of bipartidism. I see this as signs of a constantly improving and ongoing nation, not an unstable one.

I call "political diversity" what you label as "political fragmentation" and I think it is okay. And if by "instability" you mean that a lack of government for roughly one year had no negative economic impact whatsoever, I think that type of "instability" is preferable to a very strong ruling party which rules without consideration for other people's ideas.

According to our Constitution, Spain is a nation of nations. It is not accurate to use the terms nationalist and separatist in the same way because they are not exactly the same. There are quite a lot of nationalist citizens that don't want their regions to become independent but to have some autonomy when governing. It is specially important for all of us who have different cultures, speak different languages and have a better understanding of our problems and needs than a completely centralized Government. Spain is a very culturally diverse country and a single, absolutely centralized Government just doesn't fit the needs of every region. By the way, talking about cultural diversity I don't think I'll ever see a single video of foreigners talking about Spain without the stereotypical Flamenco music in the background. It is mostly a part of southern Spain's culture but I don't think many foreigners realize that it has absolutely nothing to do with a lot of other regions. For example in Galicia I've never seen/heard anyone singing/playing Flamenco. Here in the north west our traditional culture revolves around bagpipes and dances like the different Muiñeiras but literally never what these videos portray.

The twice-repeated contention that there is a "rising" nationalist, separatist or independentist movement does not seem to be based on reality. While having the majority of seats in the Catalonian congress, independentists have never gotten the majority of the vote in Catalonia. The apportionment of seats is the result of the arithmetic used. In this general election, again, only 39,38% of the vote in Catalonia went to the separatist parties, ERC, Junts per Catalunya and Front Republicà, which hardly sustains the claim of a "rising" tide for separatism. This narrative is unbecoming of CNBC. Also, the idea that the Supreme Court is just "a court in Madrid" and the omission that the referendum called by separatists is clearly unconstitutional and had no legal basis at all at any moment whatsoever gives the uninformed viewer a skewed perception which does not correspond to the facts. Very disappointing. More to the point: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i3qZXoyGrKiApJo

Spain reinvested 70% of its wealth in America and the Philippines (80% in the 18th century), to build a Western society, while the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and France took almost all the wealth of their empires to London, Amsterdam and Paris, even in the 20th century. The other 30% of the money produced in the empire went to our NATO in Italy, and to save Catholicism in Europe, in a 200-year war (1500-1700) against 5 European powers. We saved Catholicism and created a world in America. That weighed down the Spanish economy when the industrial age arrived, but it gave us the greatest wealth: more mother-speakers than the entire Commonwealth, the United States, the French and Dutch empires combined, and 800 million Catholics thanks to our victories and our investment. The Napoleonic invasion, and an apocalypse of wars between 1792-1840 sank the Spanish economy by 80%, with a large immigration to America, and it took us more than a century to recover, but we still had an empire in the 5 continents in 1898. We were the sixth or seventh power in the world, like France and the United Kingdom now. After the Spanish civil war, which stopped communism in Western Europe, we suffered an international blockade for 20 years (1939-1959), with the economy sinking 60% after the war. Even Nazi Germany and the entire West received the Marshall plan. Spain only received Argentine beef. But Spain had an economic revolution after 1960, when we were able to trade on equal terms, and in 1975 Spain was the tenth industrial power in the world. In 1998 Spain was the seventh power in the world in terms of GDP. The crises of 2008 and the Pandemic have hurt us, but in 2017 we had better income per capita than Italy for the first time. Spain is better placed in the development indices than France and Italy. We have a more valued democracy than that of the United States, France, Italy, Israel and Belgium. We are the tenth power in scientific research. There are already 5 Spanish regions richer than all the French regions (except Paris) and than several regions of West Germany and the United Kingdom. We have the third life expectancy in the world and one of the best public health systems in Europe, as well as the third cultural heritage in the world. The army has also modernized a lot, and manufactures almost all of its weapons. Every decade we approach the countries of northern Europe by 5% economically. In 2050 we will have the same wealth as countries like Germany, France, the United Kingdom or Sweden, but with a much larger global legacy.

Calling president changes “unstable” is nothing below an insult to anyone’s intelligence. People shouldn’t vote the parties like they are their childhood football teams, each situation requires different types of leadership and during his life the same person may find that different party programs suit them best. In this last election Spain gave a good lesson to his neighbors, brexit in uk, ultra right winning eu elections in France, Salvini coming strong in Italy... this things bring “unstability” not government changes.

Spain is a bit unstable because we have too many politicians and too many public administrations and semi-public companies full of the friends of the politicians, basically people whose objective is in many cases contrary to the general public interests. But on the other hand we have a very good public health service and the quality of life is I believe relatively high. I, as a Spaniard, would say we need more representation of the prívate sector in our politics and less sheep that do and say whatever just to keep their nice jobs.

I am spanish, let me explain you. Over the last crisis the socialist were leading the government promising for jobs and better public education etc. But they only managed to lose jobs, as they gave you compensation for not working and companies had to pay more taxes, therefore the jobs were less paid, and people had more taxes. Overall an average family imcome could go down by 25-35% Which can be a big deal. After the boom of the crisis, people voted to right wingers and the country stabilized again, then the socialist said that he will make Spain a better country which he’ll never make, just an other crisis. Ah and by the way the right wing on the last elections had more votes, but we all know how the voting system works, so the socialist party won. Spain will be on crisis.
