Many people nowadays don't know this, but the main reason the 67 has all those soft knobs and no knob on the ashtray is because of the new for 67 safety regulations. Hard small knobs were no longer allowed, as they could cause injury in an accident.

I bought a '67 Bug w/Sunroof last summer. White with black interior. Engine is from a '70, so my backup lights weren't' wired back in. I LOVE DRIVING this Bug. It was nice here in NC today, so I drove it to lunch outing.

Hey Chris. Thanks for the video. It's great to see the '67 get some love. I've had my Savannah Beige '67 (9/66) since '78 and it was very original when I got it. A couple of comments. The mirrors were dealer installed. Mine had a 101 round mirror. The late '66 dooe handles are visually similar but are not interchangeable with the '67 handles. Disc brakes were required with the 1500 in certain markets to meet safety regulations.

My first car was a Red 1967 VW Beetle purchased new when I was 14 years old with my paper route earnings. It cost $1,951.75 with $200 worth of options. Black Leatherette interior, Radio, pop out rear windows, under dash shelf and undercoat. I learned to drive in that car

Awesome video. I read that my '67 would have had a Sapphire V or VI radio which is the 1 year only radio. I guess the V is AM only and the VI is AM/FM. Luckily the previous (original) owner hadn't cut up the dash, so I was able to find a working Sapphire VI to go in it. It wasn't cheap, and not great sound quality, but so cool to hear tunes coming out of an almost 60 year old radio. Also, the driver fender was damaged 30 years ago so I have 1 original fender and one aftermarket. I would have never noticed the difference in the little grills if not for one of your previous videos.

My first car was a 1967. Bought it back in the summer of 1974. My father worked at the VW dealership in Charlotte, NC and the car had been in an accident. The front end was flattened up to the front tires. Dad and I spent the summer doing the body work and getting it ready to drive back to Ohio (which is where I lived). After the body work, a complete paint job and an engine top end, I drove the car for 10 years. The Ohio rust finally got the best of it, but I think of that car often!

Terrific rundown! My wife and I got married in 1972. At that time she drove a beige 1967 Beetle and I drove a red 1970. As college students, the Beetles were prefect for us. They were cheap and reliable transportation. All these years later we thought it would be fun to get an old Beetle. I guess because of what we had in the early days, I wanted to get either a 1967 or a 1970. I really wanted a 1967 but found out very quickly that '67's in good shape were way expensive so we settled for another '70. It's such a fun car to putter around in and whenever we do take it out we have to plan extra time because there's always someone who wants to stop and ask us about the car and then tell us stories about the Beetle they once had. And we dearly love hearing those stories. Thanks for this terrific video about the '67's!

My parents bought a 67, after almost buying a 66. Good that you mentioned how the earliest 67s had 66 style rear bumpers and 66 style seat-back latches, and that the latest 66s had the 67 style door handles. The only bad thing about the 67 is that they eliminated the medium blue that 64 - 66 offered. That was a great color. Back-up lights were an option on older bugs, but found few takers.

1967 bug was also.different again for the UK and Europe. Visually the front fenders and lights were retained from 1966.

The difference was a US NTHSA requirement that outlawed having glass in front of the required sealed beam headlights. That's the reason for the one year US fenders.

Chris I have a question for you... If you had a 68 or later with a 4 lug bolt pattern and you wanted a wide 5 bolt pattern, do they make adapters to be able to do that.. My first bug was a 68 and I loved it, but I have to admit, I think I like the 67 better... Thx for the video.. Take care and enjoy the Fla winters...

I believe you can use ‘66-‘67 wide five drums; the fronts just drop in. For the rears you might need to use a spacer on each drum and again ‘66-‘67 wide five drums would work.

Being a '67 aficionado' myself, (owned 2 sweet original, low milers over the past 40 years, still own my 67 convertible) I agree with your take on this unique year! Especially the part where your VW factory mechanic friend said that when they first came out, they were not anything particularly special and have grown in their desirability after the fact. The new deck lid and headlights design were the biggest visible 'oddity', everything else was esoteric to the new owners. I remember when the '68's came out in Fall '67, the changes were PROFOUND and earth shattering for VW at the time, which I think made people start to hearken back to the earlier models - especially the 67's - a few years later. One thing about the '67s that you owned previously that I can't wrap my head around, (sorry!) are those FAT 'gangsta' white wall tires you like to adorn your cars with, along with the tweed headliners and the Sewfine "Kustom" style resto-mod seat covers. My '67 VW purist-OCD makes me cringe, sorry dude...
@classicvwbugs
@classicvwbugs 6 ай бұрын
They are our signature looks on our cars and they are VERY successful. Doing those changes brought the best ROI. Even though they are not stock, it still looks vintage, and it targets folks that want a damn good looking bug. Lets face it, at this time period, the color combos were bland and cheap. I love my VW purist, and many people think I am purist to a degree, but unfortunately if I would have stayed in that realm with 67s in particular, I would be broke. My approach does not target the purist, but the car collector that has 20+ cars in his collection, and has the funds.

@@classicvwbugs Hey, Chris.. no worries! Thanks for all you do for the classic VW community here on You Tube! You've definitely found the sweet spot for your ROI with these gems you've restored over the years. As well as helped countless ACVW enthusiasts, including myself with your guidance and tips. Much, MUCH respect! I'm 70 years old, and remember when these cars were quite contemporary (I bought a new '72 Special Edition 'Baja' Champion SE and a new '79 Convertible - both off the showroom floors) and lived back in those days - daily driving both VWs AND Porsches. So, I guess seeing a '67 Beetle shod with your signature fat whitewalls is somewhat 'off-putting', which - to ME, were more appropriate for a '59 Caddy or '60 Pontiac than a German import in the late 1960's. I was there then, that's just me... You do you! What about the 3/4" whitewalls that were actually OEM supplied on Convertibles during this time period?

What makes a 67' Beetle sooo special! It was the car I grew up with, to me as a kid it was better than a pet dog! Dark blue, off white interior. I loved everything about that Beetle. When Dad sold it, I cried over it. I remember looking at other cars with Dad to replace the 67', a Pacer, fishbowl on wheels. I said to my Dad " Please don't by this thing!" He didn't, he bought a 75' Oldsmopile. I never grew to like that car, zero character. I could easily write a magazine article of the memories & adventures on that ol' 67' Beetle!

I know the ‘67 is the favorite, but I think the ‘66 was better. The headlights were still the older, more elegant style. Cheaper parts crept into the interior in ‘67. 12 V is great and all, but make mine a ‘66.

I love the 1967 because that is the car I learned to drive on. My moms was an early 1967 purchased around 9/66, ruby red with black interior. It did have the pear-shaped drivers side mirror, black upper bucket seat release and the horizontal interior rear bumper bar. My grandmother liked it so much she bought a late 1967 purchased summer, 8/67, in lotus white with black interior. Her car had the 1968 high back buckets which I loved! Both cars were purchased new from the VW dealer in Everett Washington. But my best friend's moms 1968 VW beetle was way more fun to drive fast because of the improved rear suspension. Don't tell our moms 😂

I have a '67 Mexico-production beetle sedan. I believe that '67 was the first year of Mexico production. It's not the same as a German '67. It's everything of a '64 German sedan, with a 40- horse, 6-volts, but it does have a German style '67 black steering wheel and column, and German '67 exterior door handles. It's rather a subtly unique car. I've never seen another one like it.

Did they make any deluxe-model '67s with the Wolfsburg hood crest, so that adding one would not compromise the car's authenticity too much? I always thought they looked much better with it. The glassed-in headlights that were legal in Europe would also look better than the stand-up sealed beams.

6:07 I'm surprised to see a rear anti-sway bar on any car with swing axles. The '64 Corvair had a front anti-sway bar, but on the rear they put on something that could be called an anti-anti-sway bar, sort of a see-saw type thing that made it much harder for both swing axles to be extended at the same time, preventing some of the spin-outs for which Corvairs were famous. Of course, Beetles were less prone to that, but an anti-sway bar on the back still seems like a move in the wrong direction, unless the driver is unusually skilled.
