Just got back last night. Womp womp 😩 but my oldest son had come down to Florida 2 days before I left and we were at honeymoon island state park beach yesterday morning. I introduced it to him. He was with his friend and the friends girlfriend. My son told me his girlfriend wanted some shells so I showed him and his friends and I found about 3 nice size horse conchs. On the smaller side. I showed them. I also saw about 10 apple murex but all alive. Plenty of fighting conchs alive too. Some deceased that we collected. We got a lot of olives. Few moon snails. Millions of chestnut turbans (now I finally have enough to fill the empty lamps I bought!) and I found banded tulips and I even got an alphabet cone 2 days earlier. All of a sudden I had walked away a second and I can hear this older man egging someone on saying “yea you got it! Go get it! It’s right there!” Then I walk over and I said “omg! Is that my son?” And he said I don’t know is it? Lo and behold it was and he was contorting himself into a pretzel to reach a fairly large empty lighting whelk! I was laughing and yet so proud! Lol! We shelled some more and as I was explaining things and naming he said wow mom! You really know your stuff!! I said yup! All because of my beautiful Sharmon! She taught me all I know! Just a little cute story to tell you and to say thanks for bringing these beautiful videos every week and teaching us all there is to know! I for one am very grateful! 😊😊😊. P.S. Only a fraction of the park is open and no ferry to Caladesi yet due to damage. But still awesome. I now go to the far far right in the only parking lot open and by that jetty is where I found tons of goodies! Florida cones and even what I believe to be a rose murex. 99% positive! Plus in those little tide pools similar to where you are walking through on the video is where I found a lot of stuff!

As I was leaving FMB last week, the dredging equipment was there. I am so afraid to see what piling the sand up is going to do. I guess I'll see the next time I've over there. I'm editing next weeks video now. I found the most beautiful BLACK shell....
@shellstoriesКүн бұрын
@SWFBeachLife Oh man, I did not know they're dredging around there. Hopefully the wildlife won't be effected too bad. I've heard the shelling after these kinds of projects is either spectacular, or the sand mostly covers up all the shells. Fingers crossed🤞

I hope you have a fantastic week, filled with sunshine and amazing finds! Big hug and lots of love, xoxo❤,Ilona Ps: Your boots are amazing. Love the colours!

Happy new Year Ilona! The cold is finally here - but it still warms up in the afternoons. It's wonderful to live here this time of year! While the rest of the country is getting snow, we're only getting some cool air and rain later on. It rarely rains here in the winter, so we have lots of thirsty plants! I think I finally figured out how to stay warm in the winter - keep my feet dry! The boots I've been using are awesome, but I got a little over zealous with shelling with a family last week and I still got a bit of water in them! It still beats having cold feet exposed to the cold air. I'm learning! And I bought a heated vest that I'm going to try this week - LOL! I hope it works!

"Hello, Beautiful!" Blue Crabs have one of my favorite scientific names, because it translates to "Beautiful Swimmer." Thank you for an amazing beach walk. Your videography and narration just pull me right in next to you! That little jellyfish was a "real" jellyfish and not a moon jelly, but whatever that variety is, the nematocysts won't penetrate your skin, or at least the ones that bumped into my legs at Christmas were harmless. If you were a teeny fish, then be afraid, otherwise you're good.
@SWFBeachLife7 сағат бұрын
Those blue crabs are feisty! So different than the calico box crabs, which are so chill. Haven't seen one of those in a while though. I saw some other jellies on the beach recently, but I think they were perhaps comb jellies. I was reading about jellies recently and I didn't know fresh water is a no-no and you can use a credit card to scrape off any stingers left behind. I got paranoid one summer and have vinegar in my trunk - I hope I never need to use it!

Hey Sharmon! Happy New Year! What a great opening shell video to start off 2025! This was such a fun informative video. Of course I have my own favs. That blue crab was saying, "I'll gitcha!" They do love to pinch and I enjoy watching them. Yes, they are so feisty. Of the shells, I'd have to say if I could find quahaugs like that, especially the ones with the purple inside, I'd need a whole bag for collecting them and those incredible beach bowls too. Of course, the fighting conchs are so beautiful. I"d need a whole separate collection bags for those too. Anyway, I enjoyed everything you found and learning about those critters. Have you seen any Portuguese Man O Wars down there? I read reports and seen photos of them at the beaches much farther north. Anyway, have a blessed week!

@JILLCritterologist22 сағат бұрын
I've never been stung by one of these little jellyfish! Maybe I'm not hairy enough? LOL I don't think they are moon jellies; "real" jellyfish have more elaborate insides visible under the bell. Moon jellies are mostly clear except for a 4-leaf clover shape near their dome (gonads, if I remember correctly).

Where do you park? I know there is public lot when you first enter the island, the another one after lani kai thats super exoensive and then a few beach accesses. I tried parking in one of the beach accesses a month ago or so and all the people that had parked there had like a ticket on their windshield so I left. I also park at my friends condo when I visir and she is right before that buulding with the seawall and jetty, but when the tide is high I cant go around it.
@SWFBeachLifeКүн бұрын
There is plenty of public, right-off-the-beach parking, but you typically have to get there early and pay by the hour. The other lots can be less expensive if you're going to spend more than 4 hours at the beach. It's $5 an hour at all the other parking spots. If you pay for parking you shouldn't get a ticket 😃
