I've had the opportunity to own both my Blancpain Fifty Fathoms (FF) as well as the Sea Dweller. I just sold my Sea Dweller today as a consolidation exercise in my collection. The FF has so much more soul and personality; it wasn't even a close decision.

The Blancpain FF is without a doubt one of the most iconic watches of all time. When I first saw this watch back when I was in college I made a promise to myself that I would buy it one day. Fast forward 20 years and I own two of them, the SS and the gold version. My SS version has been my daily watch for the past 13 years. Great video!!

It's so interesting, because I'm always drawn back to it. The dial is so mesmerising and every little detail has been attended to, like the little triangle counterbalance on the seconds hand. It just oozes detail the more you look at it (and honestly, making this video has made me love it more) Thanks for the great comments as always, man!

Blancpain did make a 40mm 50 fathoms, I have one ,it was part of their trilogy series from the late 90s to early 2000s. It has a steel carved bezel and a piguet movement's , I think it has about 100 hour power reserve it almost never stops. The dial is beautiful, the seconds hand tipped in red is so stunning. The watch is mostly unwanted today, so good examples are available on the 71 bracelet for less than $5,000 .

I have one too and love it! On pictures I didn't like the bezel so much, but in person it is a true stunner - it plays with the light and screams HIGHEND! BUT in the near future I also get the saphire bezel to turn it into the sexiest diver :)

This is also a favorite for me. I went to try one on, believing that it would be too big anyway, so there was little risk. But, when I wore it, it was so well balanced, and the strap fit my wrist properly. This watch actually fit and balanced better than the Bathyscaphe, on my wrist. It does have a very large wrist presence, but the black and green tones contribute to less overall glare and bling.

I should have actually mentioned that it would make a perfect diving instrument at 45mm's (I've done a lot of diving in the past all over the coasts in Africa and know exactly what you mean - but 40mm's - 42mm's usually suits me fine) Enjoy wearing the watch in good health, man. I love the Fifty Fathoms. After seeing one in an AD a few months ago I was left speechless but, did think it a very thick watch, which drew me more to the different coloured dials of the stunning Bathyscaphe. I was left wondering which one I would prefer if I had the funds. Both are beautiful watches.

I just recently got my hands on a Spinnaker Fluess, and I knew it was a sort of Homage to the Fifty Fathoms, but seeing the Aqua Lung, it's basically cloned the color scheme, dial markings and hands. It also has a slightly bulbous acrylic bezel insert with the identical bezel markings, but the bezel is narrower and he case not as round in appearance.

I've seen the watch and it really is a stunner! BUT, why on earth did they put the date window on the dial like that? Why ruin such a clean aesthetic? I just don't know man... Still, the colour combinations are superb and the proportions are just as good. Thanks for the comment, man!

Some years ago, I was thinking about getting a 40mm FF with composite bracelet and black crown. It looked and felt incredible. But I read a lot about it in forums, and the movement was the same or similar to that used in the Villeret, which was not very robust at all. Service would cost 1k minimum each time. And for such a low production run, there were a proportionately high number of issues reported on watch forums. Also the lume was hand-applied and very spotty and uneven, something you don't want on a watch that expensive. Now they are 45mm and too big for my taste, not to mention I have other economic concerns now. It's even more gorgeous now, but no. Oh well.

Having four examples of the FF, I would say that the piece has evolved design wise and cosmetically from a pure dive/tool watch into a quasi-dressy casual time piece. I also have some Rolly divers and wear them more casually than I do the Fiddies. With a 7.25” wrist at 6’2”, 223lbs, the piece fits and sits well and I understand that some don’t think that physical size matters in watch sizing however I find it quite amusing when a lil 5’5”-5’6” guy has an Offshore, 47mm PAM or a Big Pilot on their wrist, regardless of that wrist’s diameter, lolol. Anyhoo, excellent Vid!! Best Fiddy vid that I’ve seen as most of these YTube “gurus” are nothing more than google gurus and most were/are invisible in the real world horological community. Nice work and informative piece! Continued Success🍻 RP

I had a Blancpain that my Dad let me use in Boy Scouts. We did dive training with a navy dive instructor, and he was quite impressed. My Dad went to Vietnam Nam to take pictures and videos of the flares they used over there to light up the countryside. This was in 1967. The watch was the mil spec model with the moisture litmus dot at the bottom. I recently had to sell it so we could get ourselves out of debt. I’ve collected several cheap dive watches since I sold it last summer, but it just isn’t the same. I’m thinking about moding a Seiko fifty five fathom to look just like the one I sold, but I know it still won’t be the same. I do know that the guy I sold it to quickly resold it because the radio active level was to hot for his comfort. I hope that wasn’t so because it set in my bedside table for years. 🤢

I agree its only flaw is its size. The 40mm special editions are far more wearable for most people. The 38mm Bathyscaphe is probably the truest in size and proportions to the original (37mm) model and fits me perfectly. What do you think of the Bathyscaphe? And the Barakuda that Blancpain launched this year?

Great watch and on my wishlist for years. It is not perfect. Three things that makes it perfect. 1: make it also in size 42mm. This is a good dive watch size for everybody. 2) A see through case back would be nice. I know it is a dive watch but looking at the movement of this Blancpain would be something extra. 3: A quick strap change system with some other nice straps in leather would also be a welcome change. Just my 2 cents.

You could also have mentioned that the CEO, while working on and testing the watches that would become the Fifty Fathoms happened to also be diving with the head of Rolex marketing. And shortly after the FF came out Rolex was able to come out with the Submariner with a lot of the design language in the FF. But I’m sure it was just a coincidence. Agree that the smaller FF is needed in the permanent catalogue. Not sure why they cannot see this. I have an old 40mm and new 45 Ti, while the 45 Ti is lighter, I still wear the stainless 40mm far more because of size.

Am I misunderstanding something? 50 fathoms is 50 times 6 feet, or 300 feet. Was that the original capability and they have simply continued with name they (Blancpain) had established? It is now 300m or 1,000 feet, which equates to 167 fathoms. The “166.67 fathoms”, not so catchy is it?

I’d love to buy a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms..... However, I’ve been SCUBA Diving hundreds of times and would never wear anything but a Steel Bracelet. When you live on salt water, the last thing you want to worry about is removing a watch to dry out or to swap watches back and forth. I realize the Blancpain is available with steel bracelets, but the vast majority are shown without.....rendering them useless in real world conditions. I could always wear my Submariner 24-7 in and out of water non stop. I’d love to buy a Fifty Fathoms however, thanks!

Excellent point. I should've also prefaced by saying that I did a lot of diving along the coasts of Africa in the past and know what you mean about bracelets. The one thing that does concern me is that the strap would probably not survive being exposed to salt water and drying and salt water and drying time and time again. I would be interested to know how the canvas would stand up over time. Out of interest, which submariner do you use in the water often? And thanks for the comment, man!

@@ID-Guy Back in the early 80's I bought my first new Submariner....dove hundreds of times off the coast of Maine, USA. Along with fishing and water-skiing....all in the salt. in the mid-90's I bought an Explorer-II and wore both of those watches for 30-some years until giving them to my twin daughters in 2015. Since then I've picked up a handful of new watches. Explorer-I's & II's, Datejust-41's, steel BLRO-GMT; but passed on many ceramic Daytonas, Subs, and Sea-Dweller-43. I probably prefer the Explorer-I over any other watches these days. I do however think the Fifty Fathoms is SOOOOOOO cool.... Every time I'm in Zurich I stop at their boutique to look them over.

@@mrg1911 Absolutely fantastic, man. Thank you so much for your story and insight. I love hearing about other peoples experiences. Also, seeing that you like the FF so much (and drool over them like me) I'd say you should just pull the trigger on it ;) I mean, it's not like its a watch that'll get boring in years to come. Again, thank you for your comments!

Got a FF 5015, I love it but do t consider it a capable dive watch, way too fragile, bezel is very hard to turn with wet hands... i wear it often, but the only watch that goes diving with me everyday ( live by the sea) is my SD43. This is a very tough watch, believe me!

So right. Make it a 40 or at least 42 maybe. When will the makers admit to themselves we want a smaller watch. Evidence in sales across the industry. U can find a green 42mm Glashutte sixties but uou aren't going to find the green no date 39. That's the sweet spot right there.

7:40 You know, when you drop several thousand dollars on a watch...it's just funny seeing someone cheap out and put an undersized strap on it. The aesthetics of the Blancpain are phenomenal...outside of the rather boneheaded decision to engrave it on the side of the watch. The two things that do this watch in for me is: 1) The cost. It costs more than it's competition while seemingly offering less. 2) Thickness- At 15mm, this is on the edge of being "too much." But for a watch north of $10,000, it should be closer to 10-12mm.

I would wanna see your take at a Tudor Pelagos, 40 mm date at 6 and the square hour markers encapsulated in lume and bordered with a silver lining as with the round Rolex ones. The hands should be the silver lined normal hands, not the white on the current model. And the biggest blasphemy... LESS TEXT, only Tudor Geneve and below Pelagos, next line 500m and that’s it. All the other marketing flanel needs to be on the back... uuh, that seems to be my take on it, and before I forget, it needs a rubber strap, like the everest ones, clean with a middle upper bridge, and connected to the watch (rounded edges) and if I could choose, since it’s a modern watch, it needs a practical thin folding clasp, and not a block of metal like is now the case. (Omega planet ocean rubber strap does this very well)

Great! I feel honoured man... I thought I was getting a bit in overdrive here, but apparantly it’s workable... I really appreciate you putting in the effort to render my thoughts about what I think is the only good MODERN Tudor, with a good movement, but... with some flaws in the design and not unimportant, something needs to be done about the wearing comfort to, because straps seem to be an afterthought most of the times, and get no design treatment whatsoever... I am glad too somebody is doing what you are doing, because frankly, i was feeling their was a need for showing better/improved design in a visual way rather than talking about it.... and maybe secretly hoping Tudor is observing... So, thanks again and bon courage, i am very curious!

You hump. You had me sold, I was going to move it up on the list for my next watch. I was already selling my Omega SMP300 to help fund it. Then you told me how freaking big it is. With a 15.75 CM wrist it's a non starter for me. But great review just the same.

For me it is too tall. I can deal with diameter but it looks odd on the wrist with such a thick case. On my wrist the lugs don’t even touch and are hanging in the air. That I think is the problem with size. And yes it is one of my favorite watch and I will buy one if they can shave a few millimeters from the thickness

The Blancpain is a fantastic watch, I am thinking about a ceramic case myself BUT, like in every industry branch, there can only be one king and that is the Rolex Submariner.
