As someone who is now Orthodox Christian and has done psychedelics in the past, I can say for sure that it is an exposure to unearned wisdom. It's much like being a radio that has its amperage jacked and exposed to all frequencies at once: you'll get it alright, but to what end? Blessedly I had a stronger constitution than many of my friends and I was able to carry on, but many of them burnt out. Lord have mercy, do hallucinogens at your own peril.

Same experience here - joining the Orthodox church is helping heal from the exposure to psychedelics, but it takes time. This is also the criticism I have of my protestant background/theology - that healing is a button on the God vending machine. I pray people heed the warnings!

I’m undecided on psychedelics. It brought me back from deep depression, from broken to on the mend. I also did psychedelics in a strong container. I only did it by myself a couple of times. My intention was always to heal. So I’m wonder if there is room for psychedelics within an Orthodox framework.

I wouldn't have considered the Orthodox Church if it wasn't for my experience with psychedelics; I was highly biased against The Bible and Christianity for much of my life but they definitely helped me to break free of the negative cultural associations with the faith that I had accumulated in my life. Now that I'm reading the Bible with an open mind I'm able to see a depth I never could have anticipated before.

The ego has no difficulty with _the idea_ of God. But the _experience_ of God is fiercely defended against. That paraphrased statement comes from A Course in Miracles. You are with the Darwinians perspective. The reality is that we are moving away from the last dark age when the masculine was up front and protective. Movement to a higher age always involves the feminine which has a different influence. Both are necessary and consciousness, mind, and nature use both when appropriate, necessary and timely. We humans adjust and play our roles.

The purpose of life is: To know, love, and serve God, who is both transcendent and immanent, all there is, and Who we can be One with. As Christ said: Ye are gods, and that is so. The idiocy of the biological perspective of mid-nineteenth century Darwinism has confused many. There are cells, electricities, electromagnetism and magnetism, consciousness, mind, and individualized souls or sparks of Cosmic Consciousness. We are all of that, so enough of reductionism. At the cusp of a quantum age, it is time we realize we are the microcosm of the macrocosm.

40:12 doesn’t this definition of a cult mean the section mean that Christianity is a cult if we look at where Jesus calls us to hate our parents and abandon everything to follow him? (Catholic, so I am not saying this is the case, but this definition doesn’t really seem to be ideal)
@drydizzle2954
@drydizzle2954 3 ай бұрын
Christianity is a cult. Cult is an often incorrectly applied term that is used as a buzzword to imply a small group of contrarians with high in group preference, typically with elevated negative ethnocentrism who cut themselves off from the rest of the world with some sort of weird sexual spin involved. That' is simply not accurate though. Any system of belief that holds to beliefs and practices in someway would be considered cultic.

Jonathan's idea that we are too rational these days is bizarre. The opposite is true, today we are incredibly religious and superstitious and driven by emotion. Tell me exactly what about the modern left strikes you as rational? Jonathan talks about all the good things that our society lacks as if only mystery and superstition can provide them. Like "why should we love our own ethnic group?" It must be some unfathomable mysterious thing according to Jonathan. I agree with a lot of the problems he points out. But his idea that it's caused by focusing on rationality is ridiculous to me.

@@suppression2142 "Jonathan's idea that we are too rational these days is bizarre" I think you may be misinterpreting him. An atheistic claim is that if we rid the West of spirituality (God) then that will usher in the modern day utopia. The problem is, the reverse has occurred. (As predicted by Nietzsche.) As science has relegated God to the dumpster bin, the West has become incredibly nihilistic - no meaning to life. Suicide rates per capita are higher now than at any point in human history. "I agree with a lot of the problems he points out. But his idea that it's caused by focusing on rationality is ridiculous to me." He's not saying that the problems are caused by focusing on the enlightenment, he's saying that the problems are occurring because we've neglected the need for a higher purpose that science cannot provide. Science is a brilliant tool, but it needs to be wielded by faith. Science cannot wield itself.
@qwertyuiopqwerqwererty
@qwertyuiopqwerqwererty 3 ай бұрын
32:54 he addresses this a little bit. The far left is absolutely an evolution of the "counterenlightenment"- Jonathan elsewhere has said he sees that movement as a component of the enlightenment itself. I think he might say that the elevation of reason above all else does not delete human irrationality, so it finds ways to manifest itself, or something like that.

We should not mess with the wonderful faculties that God has given us. We are the microcosm of the macrocosm. Great Saints have always realized this.
