According to posted Q&A in TripAdvisor, around 2007, it was stated that the hotel was closing for 18mths for full overhaul, rm60M (at that time). Plan was to reduce room numbers, increase villa choices and incorporate real estate into the project. Jump to Cover Story report in 2015, interview with the Chairman of Trade winds, who owns the Mutiara, said that it would cost rm200M to reopen the hotel. For that price, he said, he could build a new hotel. So, costs vs revenue is the reason why it has remained abandoned.

I spent 6 days on my honey moon, back in late 90s.... And hands down... It was and still the best hotel I've ever seen. Ultimate Golden memories.

Went there in 1988 when it first opened, knew someone who worked there, used the pool and had lunch there. Nice hotel. Went back in 2019, knew it was closed, but wanted to explore the abandoned building but couldn't get by security. Whole place was fenced off.

when it was still running it was already known as the most haunted hotel in penang by us penangites...at that time it was the furthest hotel up. maybe being the last hotel(teluk bahang) and surrounded by the jungle made it more haunted. we already saw lack of guests staying there whenever we went to bt feringhi...unlike other hotels in bt feringhi which was always packed.
