It's nice to see someone explaining the N64 controller's unconventional design in good faith, rather than just saying, "because Nintendo is f**king stupid lol." They were forging a brand new path in 3D gaming, and given the full context of the time, the controller's design was quantifiably clever (particularly in forcing gamers to learn to adapt to the analog stick).

I actually think having 3 handles is fine for a ton of games, as it sort of solves the "either the dpad or the left analog stick will have to be located unergonomically" issue. Though I think a lot of players solve this issue modernly by... using different controllers in different games.

I main the DualShock 3, and I've used all of its controls very thoroughly... I've never really found it to be "unergonomic", especially to the point that I'd need to switch to another controller. @Sydney_AngelytАй бұрын
the Xbox Series control doesn't feel bad when using dpad or stick
@todesziege22 күн бұрын
Yeah. The problem with the "dualshock" style layout is that there'll always be a struggle for optimal placement between the stick and d-pad (and, on the other side, buttons and stick). (On PlayStation the sticks are scuffed off into the center of the controller, while on Xbox 360/Gamecube the D-pad is push aside instead. On the original Xbox it feels like _both_ the D-pad and stick as a compromised position.) While a lot of people are so used to the "modern layout" they don't even register it as an issue, there is only so much surface space available, and your thumbs only stretch so far comfortably. But people don't miss what they never knew. The only other layout that really ever "solved" this IMO was the Dreamcast/Saturn 3D controller, which had the d-pad and analog stick in a vertical lline, and was so big that you'd simply slide your hand up/down to grip the controller differently depending on what the game used.

9:32 Actually, the Dual Analog Controller came out on April 25, 1997, predating the N64's Rumble Pak. The Dual Analog Controller not only has two clickable analog sticks and a mode selector switch, but Japanese models of this controller have a pre-installed vibration motor that vibrated along to select games, providing force feedback to the player. Outside Japan, the Dual Analog Controller came out, but without the vibration function. The rest of the world didn't get vibrating analog controllers until late 1997 with the introduction of the DualShock analog controller, which had vibration function for every region. Unlike the Japanese Dual Analog Controllers, the DualShock has two vibration motors; one light and one strong. This added various degrees of controller vibration, and Nintendo wouldn't adapt this to their controllers until the Nintendo Switch with the HD rumble.

I'm 39 so i can tell you. Back in A.D. 2101 war was beginning. During this time, the N64 was all the craze! "23 skidoo" us 90s kids would yell as we ran to EB toys, funco land, or babbages to get our hands on a N64. We loved Mario 64 even though it was a fortnite rip off. There was only one handle on the controller however at first. The thumb stick handle essentially. Its just, we kids at the time wanted to shove the controllers up our ass. They added three handles as a safety measure, but then we just had three kids trying to get one controller in all three of their asses. Hence the term "Couch coop". Since everyone knew "its only gai if balls touch" the parents didn't mind, but Shigero miyamoto said "Please do not do that". Much later on future generations carried this tradition on with the DS by shoving the stylus in their peeholes.

The design of the N64 controller is basically Nintendo hedging their bets. Grab the two outside prongs and you've got an SNES controller. Grab the center and right prongs and you've got analog movement with action buttons. Grab the left and center prongs and you've got WASD and mouse (complete with trigger). @4:33 There's actually two photodiodes next to each other which generate on/off electrical signals in response to the light shining through the slotted disc. The electronics in the controller use these signals to increment and decrement the position value sent to the N64. Not as precise as a true analog stick but very robust.
@zerobyte8028 ай бұрын
I always played FPS games like Goldeneye using left mode (right hand on analog, left on D pad) because this was like WASD+mouse control. You can still press A and B with your right thumb albeit not so quickly. Usually those were weapon cycle buttons, Z was shoot, and L was action/duck

The three handles were genius because it works around the issue of trying to fit both an analog stick and a d-pad into the same spot. On the more typical dual stick controllers either one is pushed away into some awkward position (the stick on PlayStation, the d-pad on GameCube), or they're _both_ in less-than-optimal places (Xbox). Most people are too used to the layout now to even be able to see it, but if you think about it there really is no way to fit everything in there without some compromise.

It's because Sony did the same thing only a year later, on a more ergonomic controller, all based on Nintendo's Dog bone design that players were comfortable with but with hand grips and DUAL joysticks on the PlayStation which was already orders of magnitude more successful than the N64. The PS1 has one of the largest game libraries of all time. Nintendo got completely outplayed that generation and now that's exactly what the N64 controller is known for now: a controller for a short time when 3d standards weren't established yet.. and weren't established yet because Nintendo put out a bad controller with one analog stick so they couldn't possibly have been at that time. Before Sony, they were basically the kings of the gaming market. The N64 directly paved the path for Sony and it's controller basically became the embodiment of Nintendo's failure to compete that generation; and you can sure as hell feel that when you go back to play N64 imo.

Interesting how Nintendo introduced the stick to console gaming (well, made it popular, at least) to the point that Sony and Sega copied it. Sega flipped the position of the left stick and the d-pad around compared to the PlayStation, which Microsoft then used for the original X-Box (a remnant of when the console was supposed to support Dreamcast games), and that layout is basically standard nowadays mostly because of the success of the X-Box 360, to the point that the only console manufacturer not using it is Sony.

The Saturn/Dreamcast doesn't exactly use the "xbox layout". The stick and d-pad on the Sega controllers are placed in an almost straight line---with the d-pad being further outward than on even the original Xbox. You grip the controller higher or lower depending on if you use the stick or d-pad.

Even the MegaDrive's 3 button controller was made so to outrace the NES' two button layout. It all built up one upon the other.

The Mega Drive 3-button controller was arguably based more on Sega's arcade machines of the time, but it was an improvement in that the A button was a lot more accessible than the NES's select button.

All analog sticks are digital input. Lol. Standard analog sticks have 256 'digital' inputs in 4 different directions. Essentially, trying to say the N64 analog stick isn't really analog would be like trying to say video isn't really video, it's just a bunch of still images shown quickly.

In the early days of 3d gaming. We haven't figured out the design of the controller.

I hate the Dual Shock controller... still do. To me it's so uncomfortable, and hate when I have to use it on my PS5. I like the more Xbox style controller or even the Switch Pro controller.
@autobotstarscream765Ай бұрын
I feel like the PS5 DualSense is more Xbox-like than the DualShocks though, unless you specifically mean that habit of smushing the sticks together and dangling them off a base that looks like it hasn't changed much since the SNES.
@popixelАй бұрын
@@autobotstarscream765 yeah it’s the positioning of the analog sticks that I hate. The Xbox has much better placement for the sticks.
@autobotstarscream76522 күн бұрын
@@popixel It's basically the industry standard as seen on every Xbox controller since the original and most Nintendo controllers since the GameCube that came out at the same time.
@popixel22 күн бұрын
@ no, I’m talking about the placement of the analog sticks on the PlayStation controllers specifically. The Xbox and Switch are much better.
@autobotstarscream76522 күн бұрын
@popixel Yeah, that's what I was talking about, the sticks have been in the same place on every video game controller that isn't a Sony product since the sixth console generation consisting of PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox, with the only exceptions being a few outliers such as the WiiMote. The everyone-but-Sony stick arrangement is by definition the standard as PlayStation would be the outlier.

Surprised you didn’t mention the lack of 2 face buttons (SNES had 4). They had a new Z button, but that’s still 1 less. And technically you’d have a deficit of 2 again if you had to use the D-Pad.
@todesziege22 күн бұрын
It has six face buttons if you use the C buttons (fighting games did this), which is more than the PlayStation.
@mrshmuga922 күн бұрын
@todesziege "If" does a lot of heavy lifting. Most games on N64 are 3D (and devs were aiming to make 3D games since it was new) and those 4 buttons are often used/made for the camera. So realistically you only have 2 face buttons, A & B.
@todesziege22 күн бұрын
@@mrshmuga9 Even lot of 3D games of the time didn't really have much camera control, relying more on a fixed or automatic camera. But _if_ you needed them for camera controls, yeah, there weren't that many buttons left. (There's an argument to be made that developers should try using less buttons, but that is another matter.)

The n64 controller is my favourite controller of them all Its flaws .. 1. Not enough buttons to truly allow it to be used with modern games of today 2.its stick,while being the very best control stick of them all,is flawed in that it degrades over time/use The L button ... ok please understand that the Z button IS rhe intended L button ... the L button is used as an EXTRA button where you use the controller in its primary center held use .. however,the L button is also used in its traditional use when you use the controller in its traditional held use for certain games like fighting,2d platformers and so on I for the life of me find it difficult and annoying when weird people do NOT gwt nor understand the n64 controller By the way ... the ps style controllers are garbage,however the sony controller has the BEST digital sticks even to the day however,the layout and dpad .... i say no more
