@shaulov10 another one of CDs Developers Mazin confirmed that another name for the Zone would have been ridiculed root it's also likely that the the bit of the Zone we see in the credits is likely the present version of The Zone but that's just a guess really if I had a rough guess of what the good Futures color palette would be it would probably be purple since all the good Futures in Sonic CD are a different color from each other and we don't have a purple good future I mean we have tidal Tempest which is kind of pink

the production value of this video was a massive unexpected slap to the face compared to your other content regarding Sonic (in a good way), it's definitely worth appreciating, you didn't need to go that hard, yet you did... amazing job. it's... this was an interesting topic i don't think about too often so i don't really have much to say, but it's definitely fun to think about what these levels could've been if implemented into their final product.

Hidden Palace almost had a chance of actually making it into the game, since it was intact in some of the last betas of Sonic 2. But, they ended up removing it due to memory limitations and in the final build, like you said, there is barely anything (except the music track and level icon) remaining.

Sonic CD was originally going to be a CD port of the original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game, Sonic The Hedgehog, but it became its own project. Due to this, this led most Sonic CD rounds being based on original Sonic zones, like Palmtree Panic and Collision Chaos are based on Green Hill and Spring Yard Zone, respectively. If that's the case, then R2 should be based on Marble Zone. The name of the zone eventually got revealed which is "Dubious Depths/Ridicule Root". Either name could be an early name for the other, like how Palmtree Panic was originally going to be called "Salad Plain". There are 2 theories on why it was scrapped: 1) It was removed due to space/time constraints, considering how latter Classic Sonic games at the time were receiving less development time compared to the original game it was based on. 2) R2 is unfit for the game's themes/mechanics, so it ended up cut. The game has a time travel mechanic. However, you can't time travel straight away, you have to run, run, and run, in order for it to trigger. Also, despite Sonic The Hedgehog ending up receiving well, it had its fair share of flaws that fans and critics criticize about, like Marble Zone. You start in Green Hill, which is more fast-paced and go-with-the-flow type level, but when you reach Marble Zone, it's more slow-paced, take-your-time, and strategize, also considering how being too fast in the level punishes you especially since you can't see what's ahead of you. Also, in the 2011 Sonic CD remaster, there was an unused boss known as "Final Fever", which is named after the final boss theme in the JP soundtrack of the same name. It was going to be the game's R9 if you keep the cut R2 level in mind, which was originally going to be triggered once Sonic collected all the 7 Time Stones, which teleports Sonic and Eggman into a plane where time is non-existent, and Eggman brings his robot which is virtually unstoppable by any means, but in order to defeat him, Sonic has to travel to the past where the robot is incomplete, giving Sonic a chance to destroy it. It was removed for the same reasons as the new R2, Desert Dazzle. Also, the concept where Sonic goes to West Island's Hidden Palace to unlock his Super Sonic form. This was recycled for Sonic 3 and Knuckles were after collecting all the 7 Chaos Emeralds in the Sonic 3 levels via giant rings. In the Sonic and Knuckles levels, giant rings are replaced with super rings which takes Sonic to Angel Island's Hidden Palace Zone, in order to transform the Chaos Emeralds into Super Emeralds to unlock the final form, Hyper Sonic.

Fun fact, that hidden palace we saw isn’t that lost. Sonic 2 2013 mobile port restored Hidden Palace Zone, and finished it which is finally playable, BUT if you enter this code: 03, 03, 03, 0B, 10, 10, 10, 04, and selected hidden palace, you can play Proto Palace Zone (which sadly, Sonic Origins removed Proto Palace Zone)

Another correction: Sonic 1's Mountain Zone is just a really early Labyrinth. Labyrinth was going to be almost completely different early in development, and this is what said concept looked like. You also missed Laboratory Zone, which IS a separate Zone from Scrap Brain/Clock Work. This zone wasn't concepted very much other than the pipe gimmick.

Genocide City and R2 have always been my favorite scrapped zones. I love Genocide City because it shows off a futuristic cyber type of a zone which I find cool. And I’m interested in R2 because I have a vivid memory of playing the 2013 remaster of Sonic CD when I was very young and having access to the zone and to fight the boss as you chased him across the screen.

It's always cool to see what could have been. But it's always interesting how the process of making levels for a game is very similar to writing songs to go on a music album. So many things get pitched, wrote, demo'd, etc, then you gotta trim it all down to go into the final product. It's like how a movie can have hundreds of pieces of concept art that are just pitches and were never actually officially a part the movie at any point. Just goes to show that creating any kind of art is an ever changing process.

Sonic Adventure had a scrapped Mushroom Hill stage & Jungle Stage while Sand Hill was intended to be a full stage at 1 point much like Ice Cap according to some source on Sonic Retro I read years ago. Of course it's possible that the devs thought that the Mystic Ruins were getting too much focus as 5/11 Stages are found there in the final game. Personally I believe we didn't stop getting cut zones/stages merely we stopped getting reveals of cut content. Also you should have brought up the Sky Chase Dragon. I hope we get info of cut content from the Sonic Advance Trilogy & Gamegear games someday. As for Adventure 2 I suspect that the 2P Stage Grind Race may have been assets from a scrapped stage as the others are merely edits of existing 1P Stages. Awesome video!

Mirage Island(4.2): Sylvania Castle West Side Island: Hilltop Little Planet: Rainbow Ruins (Scrapped R2) Islands as a whole: Bridge Zone+Pine Trees. Island Rush. Islander Civilization: City, Sonic Forces, but without the wanton destruction and rampaging Death Egg Sentinels. For sonic cd, Dubious Depths (R2) I’d say is now just a thing of the past, probably will never be found since there hasn’t been any recent news, One of the biggest searchers quit (not really) and started on a different path on his channel, as of right now, and so many people tried recreating but still like you said there is little to no info on it, there might be a prototype somewhere out there that contains dubious depths, but as of right now, no progress is being made and has since, slowly been forgotten. It’s sad to see a level I was hoping to be found, just not making any progress on the search, really hope dubious depths makes a comeback.

Really wish Sonic Team had time to finish Froniters and maybe we could have gotten a different unique 4th island. As for favorite cut lvls, Genocide city cuz that name sounds like the stage would be challenging Hell Zone for gamers and I’m interested in what Sonic Team original planned for the stage. For stage I wish was shown is the Olympus stage. Sounds interesting n unique cuz Sonic hasn’t really gotten Olympian inspired stages so it would be cool n fun to see Sonic Team creativity for that cut lvl

Seems like you forgot one! Sonic 3 has an unused zone known as Zone 5B. This zone was intended for an earlier version of Knuckles known as Rival. Sadly we don't know much about this zone as only the starting point was drawn before the devs started sketching other things.

Did you know if you do a code I forgot the code in the sonic 2 mobile port you can play the Nik arcade version and you need to do the debug code also how you beat the stage is you need to stand on the master emarld and you teleport back to the title screen or emarld hill I forgot

7:46 Incorrect, its only in the simon wai and august 21 prototypes. Although they are exactly the same. Also at 8:23 , you put dust hill and not sand shower. Dust hill was mystic cave before being changed to.. mystic cave. It was the ruined version of green/emerald hill, hence the name.
