According to Sears decomposition notes, the original form of こころ shows a human torso with breasts, stomach and navel. The tree stroke component 忄 also makes more sense now to me. Richard Sears' Chinese Etymology 字源 is usualy the first source I surf to when I want to find out something about the origin of a kanji.

Heart in Ancient Chinese is one of the pillar of the 5 "elements". Related to Fire, and the tongue. And that is the main reason that it looks that way.

Maybe that‘s how they thought the heart looks like in ancient Japan? Or maybe it was a hidden joke of that site….

Maybe it means you have a lot of love in your heart.

The other radical-form as in 性 says it all 😄... btw. the 尸 (corpse/flag-radical) somehow appears often there, where an buttock is involved... like in 尿, 屎 and 尾. Sometimes i think, the translators or teachers over the centuries got a little embarrassed over the true meaning and did "dead ass" (屍=corpse) just lie and made things up.

i think it's the 爪 つめ = claw/(finger)nail radical... and if the lower part was ⺙ ("strike"-radical) at some time in the past, the whole kanji would make so much sense ☺
