It's like that with appliances, "oh this new washer uses so much less water" yeah but its trash in 5 years and now it's filling up a landfill somewhere until the sun explodes.

when i picked up my 19 2 fiddy last year, i had plans to keep it until 100,000 because i don't want the headache. but after now almost 11months, I think the powerstroke is gonna go well beyond my expectations, especially if i can get rid of "certain things" on it. Watching your vids and PTT's I think this is a long term rig for me.

Funny, G00gLe tagged your video with an explanation for climate change. I drove my 2004 F150 4.6 for 16 years, 125k, before I bought the F250 I have now. It's still going on the frozen lakes of Minnesotta! My nephew loves it. Good video 📹!

Nice to finally say what I've been saying for decades. Same goes for everyday use items within reason. Contunually using is the ULTIMATE form of recycling as *ZERO* goes to waste. fix everything to get 5-10x use out of it.

Who remembers when CFLs were the new thing and were considered green? Pretty convenient for the lightbulb manufacturers to push an entire new product and turns out you borderline need a hazmat suit to clean them up if they break 🙄

And keep in mind. Most diesel engines can regularly last 500,000 miles or more, depending on the application and how they were taken care of. The older diesel vehicles can run on different combustible fluids if properly tuned. And overall older vehicles are more metal than composites or plastic. Therefore, a larger percentage of the material is recyclable.

I like your idea, I've owned and maintained a 2009 F350 now for 10 years. My plan is to keep it another 30 years and just keep fixing it. There's one problem with people keeping and fixing thing, it stops the consumer based economy we live in. I sure wish people would stop buying new all the time, but until there's a drastic change to the climate or the economy I don't think it going to happen.:)
@powerstrokemaintenance
@powerstrokemaintenance 7 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right. Without buying new things the world economy stops. Capitalisms needs the creation of new goods and services. It seems like the key is getting to a cyclical economy rather than linear. In the meantime though, keeping specific high value items like trucks for 10 years (as you've done) is a great way to save money and the environment.

I agree with much of your thoughts. Society does need something for people to do and earn money. Invariably that involves making things that people are convinced they need. Thus the consumer world we live in. I drove my 1987 Mercedes 300D up to 400K miles. She went down due to rust and A/C going out in 2011. That was a great car but it did need to go.
@powerstrokemaintenance
@powerstrokemaintenance 7 ай бұрын
Indeed that is a good point. I do agree that in order society to function we need to buy new things. And there are many, many items that need regular replacement. It just seems that waste could be reduced in a few places if people prioritized maintenance over replacement.

all spot on really. all the same arguments for EV's being treated as being an environmentally friendly alternative to ICE with the main concern being only with co2 emissions and that co2 emissions arent even a big deal. even still cars are not the biggest contributor to co2 emissions and even so co2 is not bad for the environment. inf act its good and we have been at the bottom, near extinction levels, of low co2 for quite some time now. so in an effort to curb the tiniest fraction of co2 emissions from ICE vehicle we decided its better that we just move those emissions out of sight of of mind in exchange for introducing a new giant pollution issue to the equation with increasing mining operation scale to cope with the massive amount of finite materials needed to create batteries for these EV's that of which are not easily recycled and create for more harmful pollution than ICE vehicles do. no to mention fossil fuels are still needed to create and recycle these things but we dont recycle them because its already expensive enough as is without adding in the cost to recycle not to mention how heavily subsidized it all is artificially dropping the cost to a point that is still just barely affordable for the average consumer. then we have the weight increase impact on road deterioration as well among other things. there are so many factors to consider that just get ignored by people that insist on maintaining their pathological notions of EV's producing a greener future. in the end its all about the money, not about saving the planet.

Indeed, thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate this comment! It seems like EVs are the trendy alternative right now because no one has actually calculated their total cost on the planets environment and infrastructure. It's just shuffling cards around not solving anything.

I've got a 2008 Lincoln Mark Lt with 177K miles. I was looking for a new F150, saw the EXORBITANT price tag, then decided to keep my 5.4L 3valve pickup until it craps out. Engine change is a much more logical purchase!

I never buy new vehicles. I drive a 24 year old dodge ram also own a Subaru that’s 15 years old. But it takes some patience and maybe some diy skills to keep old cars running. Not everyone’s cup of tea. Also The economic engine that drives the world economies is consumption, increasing consumption. New automobiles are a significant part of that. Any downturn in new car sales has a ripple effect thought out the economy. Perhaps some of the impact could be softened by selling after market parts to keep old vehicles on the road, so the Autozones and Oreillys etc will continue strong, but they don’t pay the wages like an auto assembly worker gets, not close. But I agree, the environmental impact of new car manufacturing, particularly EVs and lithium based batteries, should not be overlooked. It’s significant.

Yes agreed. It seems like it would be impossible to completely throw out the buying and selling of goods. The world would stop. And there is the DIY skills you mentioned that are needed to take care of a vehicle for a long time.

My family has a 2001 and 2002 7.3L Powerstroke. I am okay with 500 lb-ft and 250 hp or so. I also question how good DEF is in practical terms. The total costs of the fluid itself, the plastic containers that holds the fluid, the costs of the emissions systems, etc. It is just a game of money under the guise of saving the planet. Still not a fan of the 25 year import law and not a fan of CAFE standards. I got to sit in a 2018 Ram 2500 and could not see out of it, but a 2002 Superduty is much better. The hoods seem to be getting higher and higher.

Its planned obsolescence. Im an engineer who designs the package systems your Amazon, UPS, and Fedex packages move on. I make enough to buy a new truck anytime I want. But I still drive an 88 F250 7.3 IDI diesel. I have a spare engine sitting in the garage for it too I picked up for 300 bucks. I'll drive this truck until im dead. Im only 38. Many of us have realized for 30+ years the B.S. that goes into America's modern manufacturing.

@@powerstrokemaintenance Yeah, I just want a classic truck that gets the job done, and looks good doing it. I really dont want t new truck. Why pay all that money for a product that is even more expensive to repair, is designed to break on you, and enslaves you financially? Im actually on the list to get a Diesel Hybrid conversion kit from Edison Motors. I'll update to electric, but use my 7.3 engine for the generator.
