Pricing is brilliant. Profit is not in the MIJ instruments, it's in the massive sales of the Indonesian models being the same guitar for half the price. That's the Strategy. Worked like a charm for the Revstar line. Buyers didn't buy a guitar for $800, they lined up to buy an "$1800 guitar" for $800. Curious to know the #'s of MIJs that are produced relative to the Indonesian #'s 1000:1? 10k:1?

There is a significant difference in the little details of the construction. But you have to be really picky. I've own two revstars. The second one being a Japanese made revstar in crisp gold. Just an incredible instrument.
@zoeherriot
@zoeherriot 4 ай бұрын
@@fernandoocaranza4510 yeah - the Japanese ones are "better" for sure. But it's diminishing returns. The real cost increase is to account for the lower number of units they can produce given the extra attention to detail. So you don't necessarily get "more" for your money, but what you get is more polished and refined.

As a owner of 2 Pacificas 611 (one hardtail, one with the wilkinson trem), I had to swap the factory "Grover marked" tuners (with Schallers) because they felt really crappy and would cut the high E string on the hardtail one. Gotoh hadware on new on is one of the best, if not the best around. I also changed pots (CTS, with a mini toggle instead od the push pull) and jack socket. Total expense: about € 1000 each with a professional setup. Totally worth it! Soundwise, it's subjective matter (I prefer to have a p90 on the neck position for what I play). Finally, if you count the stainless steel frets eand the new contours on the newest models, the higher price tag is totally reasonable IMHO

I realize that the standard is similarly priced to the Ibanez AZ and the Charvel DK, but it is significantly more expensive than a Revstar standard. One of the most appealing things about the Revstar, is how much more affordable it is than the competition. I think a lot of us Yamaha guitar fans were expecting the Pacifica standard to be roughly the same price as a Revstar standard, so it is a bit disappointing.

Yeah I think John may have misspoke there. Has nothing to do with drying it out, I don’t think, it’s about sending shocks and vibrations through the body to replicate the effect of a played-in guitar vs a normal new one they hasn’t been fully broken in yet. I think it’s one of those things that makes a big difference to nerdy scientists at Yamaha because they can prove and see the difference in their computers, but it’s a negligible/irrelevant difference to most actual players and human ears.

Wonderful playing as usual, John. I really appreciate your gear review neutrality and objectivity. The marketing of the Pro Pacifica to sell the Standard can be taken with a tiny grain of salt, IMO, though it may be quite true. I do have a slight penchant for the older straight-edged and more unique Pacifica headstocks and bold font. These new ones seem too close to the Fender, almost a copycat. I traded in my Indonesian Ibanez AS 93 Artcore semi hollow to offset the cost of a more expensive Japanese Yamaha SA2200 and couldn't be happier. My Pro Revstar is my go to guitar and has superseded even my American made Fender Strat Pro (same price). I do believe that with these latest Yamaha products -- Pro or Standard -- you are getting a good return on your investment, years of enjoyment and will have instruments you can pass down to younger generations.
