One of the reasons why I submerge a float in gasoline and let it sit to see if it is either defective or good. Might sound OCD its a trick that a guy who built performance carburetors taught me because he said "Do everything you can to prevent any problems or comebacks."

Another issue is a pin hole in the diaphragm if there is a fuel pump on the rider eh? Tell all our customers it only takes 5 seconds to check the oil before running equipment and guess what? Two customers this year blew up their engines oil and fuel in the crankcase but not enough to hydro lock it, fired er up cutting the lawn and grenade d the engine. Total destruction for 5 seconds of work. Have had a few come in that hydro locked and they got lucky.

Man I upgraded hundreds of old deformed rubber needles after ethanol hit the market, it was nuts for several yrs there. Turning off fuel shut off, run engine/carb dry keeps it from happening. But this is why engine manuals state- "Always check oil level before starting engine". Fluid level can go up/down suddenly & checking oil first is more important on your first spring start up with more time to fill up (hydrolock) like this vid shows. This has been known to bend/break parts like piston rod/valves in small engines. True most times the engine just wont crank over being so full or it starts up and blows the extra oil/gas out the exhaust. But occasionally' one will crank over real fast at first as the piston moves down first, that engine starts, the piston moves up it stops dead as its cylinder is full of fluid. The Rod, Wrist Pin, Piston or Valves cant always handle this force & severe engine damage can occur here. Good chance this type of damage will occur more in newer engine's because far less engines have forged/high grade metals today than yesterdays small engines did. Most dont even have steel sleave anymore.😢 Sorry got long, great job on this vid.

If your gas tank is higher than your engine, splice the fuel line and put in a shut off. A petcock . That will stop it until you get a gasket set. You absolutely have to do maintenance on these engines to keep them in top shape. Most people find this out the hard way. I know I did

Funny thing is, we put in a petcock, and it still happened somehow. And yes, the petcock was closed.

@@tcp3059 well that's weird. There's only one line for gas feed ,I'm guessing. Unless it was a cheap petcock and it leaked. Or could be it ran back through the vacuum line. In any case I would have someone look at it. A professional

@@tcp3059 yeah I forgot about the pump doing that. I have a Husqvarna with a Briggs & Stratton 22 HP only 8 years old. Had to replace several parts and rebuild the Nikki carb. It's not easy finding the parts 4 Briggs since they went under. When you do they are quite expensive. But it's cheaper than buying a new lawn mower. Especially when you can't afford to. I'm retired now on a fixed income, but I enjoy working on things. Just something about doing it yourself, it brings satisfaction. Good to hear yours came out okay

Jeremy, I have about three Cub Cadets in which my 682 Cub Cadet with the KT17 Series 2 opposed twin engine had a episode late last fall in which while the Cub was sitting idle one day, I suspect that a small piece of dirt stuck between the needle & seat in which the crankcase did fill up with gasoline oil mix in which I had to suction out the crankcase. When I tried to crank over the engine, The hydro lock was so bad that the positive battery terminal melted from the battery due to the engine straining so hard. Upon getting the engine crankcase suctioned out, I refilled with new oil and made new battery cables for the new battery and cranked over the engine in which I got the engine to backfire which is a old Ford trick for carburetor issues. First of all, I ran the engine with only enough gasoline in the tank to start the engine and everything seemed normal. Now I keep the fuel valve in the gas tank shut off when the tractor is not being used as well as only keeping a small amount of gas in the tank unlike before when just about the entire contents of the 4 gallon fuel tank was emptied into the crankcase. Those KT17 Kohler engines are not the easiest engines to work on concerning the carburetor and or the fuel pump compared to most of the other engines. Now after I shut off the engine, I shut off the gasoline and let the engine run till it quits. Nothing like “Piece Of Mind”.

With even the possibility of a pulse pump diaphragm rupture that would leak gas into the crankcase, it is imperative that you check the oil lever EVERY DAMN TIME before using that engine.... ANY rise of what was a proper oil level that you had checked before would definitely indicate gas leaking form the pump into the crankcase.... CHECK THE OIL LEVEL EVERY TIME....

Thanks for this video. I had gas on the floor and decided to take the carb off but the fuel was pouring through the fuel pump. Replaced the pump but I remember the needle looking bad. It's running good now but I'll replace the needle too. Thanks again.

I had this very problem with an old Sears garden tractor. Turns out it was the needle and seat. Changed it out and put a petcock in the fuel line just before the carb. Problem solved, and it didn't destroy the engine, thankfully. Good lesson.👍

Was going to do some mowing but first things first. Air up the tires, check the oil level... YIKES! The fuel tank was empty but the oil reservoir was full over full I might say and smelled like fuel. @@diazpty Here's what I wound up doing. The carburetor's needle valve that shuts the fuel on and off (attached to the float) was at fault. I couldn't just get a replacement so I got the whole carburetor and replaced it. Once it was adjusted and working properly, I installed a shut off valve on the fuel line that feeds the carb. So when I shut down the mower, I also turn off the fuel. Let the engine run until it runs out of fuel. Now it is ready for the next time I need to mow. Hope this helps.

My predator 670 had this issue, this morning as I was starting it to go hunting. It started and popped up the oil dipstick, I observed the fuel coming from crankcase and shut it down immediately. After further investigation it was a bad diaphragm pump(double pulse pump) ,removed pulse pump,installed 12v pump (low psi.) and it's off to the races. Great video

Same issues at our shop on a couple of mowers. Filled the oil witg gasoline as customer kept running it for a while. Carb parts look fine but still flood through the float valve. Thanks for the upload! ❤👍

I had a snowblower that did that, needle didn't seat and the inline fuel valve failed as well. My teenage kid did exactly what you mentioned as well, filled the engine up through the oil tube. LOL Caught his mistake before we fired it up. He had to shovel the snow, until I got around to draining the oil/gas out.

Thanks! I was wondering how gas got into my motorcycle crankcase. I knew the needle valve stuck, but couldn't figure out how the crankcase filled. I found gas in the airbox, so based on your video, I'm guessing the intake valve was closed and it ran in through the breather hose. Thanks for helping me figure that out!

This guy is awsome. I figured it was the needle and or seat and I've bought 2 carb rebuild kits and it still does it so now I just put a shut off on the fuel line and after cutting I turn the gas off and let it die out but I did not know the fuel pump thing could fill the motor so that's what I'm gonna try next only because I have no idea why the carb is so much everywhere I looked good thing tho when my engine hydro locked I drained it then put new oil and pulled the plug and it shot the gas out the plug hole then i redid the oil and filter and plug then just put the shut off and it sat all night and worked. I just wanna fix it rite so that's for the info

Just went to check the oil in my Troy Built riding mower and get it running for summer,and noticed gasoline in my oil. I didn’t start it, and my fuel tank was empty and dry. I drained the oil and had about 2qts of oil/gasoline come shooting out. Now, I’m going to check the carburetor. I’m probably going to end up buying a new (carburetor) anyway. I also have to make sure to drain as much gasoline out of my oil case as possible. Hopefully the mower still runs…ugh. I never expected this to happen. I didn’t even know it could. Any advice from anyone who’s experienced this would be helpful. I don’t want to make any mistakes

I bought a knock off carburetor and that fixed it. I also installed a shut off valve on the fuel line to the carb. I turn it off when I'm not using it, for extra assurance. @@bibianagomez2399

Thank you for your video. I had this problem. Luckily, I have checked float and needle valve. However, I am nervous fault still exists. Can you confirm if the petrol/gas only enters the engine when the engine is running or can he gas still flow into the engine when engine it is not running? Would dipping oil stick and seeing if oil level is past markings on dipstick be one method to determine if fault still exists? Thanks for your help.

I've thought maybe i just bought a defective carburetor 2 in a half years ago and its been poop that long til I parked it on the side of the hill then that's what seem to fuck it up even more it let the half of tank of gas all into the oil case and into the ohv to probably so its just been fucked up for a few months now i didn't even take it apart again because i know its the float got stuck again because that's what its been doing it done it right after installing that new carburetor. So you think a brand new needle would be bad or rotted out I kinda think it's how the float and bowl was made an the float has to be scraping the inside of the metal bowl somehow causing it to get stuck shut and stuck open if it ain't this it has to be something cause that carburetor of mine is new and the pieces were new inside it

But how did it all happen with a brand new carburetor I've been having a carburetor problem for about 2 in a half years now and the carburetor been poop sense I've bought it back then new for the Kohler command cv491s engine i have checked the float under a bowl filled with gas and under water for any holes there wasn't any Maybe i should try a cv16s engines carburetor maybe there will be a difference because I don't have any trouble with that one that ones lasting me a long time So the command model did have a gas pump but I made it gravity fed like my other mowers i don't like the gas pump way I made my old briggs twin engine gravity fed and don't have any trouble with that engine

I always run Tru- fuel in all my equipment I had just filled my tank up after cutting my grass and came out the next day, tank COMPLETELY empty and smelled hella fuel. I knew right away check my oil and it was full of fuel. I drained it fixed the needle and seat haven't had the issue since. But man was I pissed Tru- fuel is expensive I paid $42 for a 2 gallon jug of it!!!!!

@@vinces8974 Tru-Fuel is pure fuel with no ethanol plus it has additives that gives it years of storage. I'm from Pennsylvania and it's almost impossible to find non ethanol fuel from the pump. I'd much rather use that than Tru-Fuel

Mine had a small gas leak so was use to the smell but knew a half a tank couldn't have dripped all out from the cracked fuel filter so it had a small gas puddle and all the rest was in the oil case of the engine it didn't wanna start up it all but did enough to to back it out of the shed then kept dying out The carburetor that is on it is new and all the pieces inside the carburetor is new so i don't know why its been given me trouble for 2 years with the thing being new I'm not gonna put no new needle on or float I'm gonna try a different carburetor waste more money on another one that might just do the same thing how this new one been doing

If we use only gas without alcohol in it will the gas if it sits in the carb for 6 months when I don’t mow will it still cause issues of it clogging and gumming up our carbs still?

I can tell you this I seen this happen when I traveled with the traveling carnivals as the electrician the show I was on one of the other electricians I got drunk and they sent him out there to fill the generator with diesel well he fill oil fil of 150 cat engine full diesel on oil fill and put oil in in tank where diesel went then started engine it idle for about 10 minutes with no load on engine then that ear shattering boom that could be heard 2 blocks away #6 piston and top sleeve went through block punched through engine cover impacted the starter starter bolts shared off from impact starter put a hole in semi trailer wall 35000 dollar cat engine destroyed engine only had 20000 hours on b it

I just had to change the oil on my old snapper comet 12.5 Briggs L head I run it out of gas and when the floats drop to the bottom of the bowl when it's out of gas for some reason the needle sticks where the end of it lands on the float then when I refill it with gas the float stay down unless I give it a little bit tappin' of a it WAS really bad but I polished the contact surfaces BETWEEN THE FLOAT AND THE NEEDLE and now the only time it does is when it runs out of gas and I refill the tank sure is a major headache .... on my ferris Z turns I put in drain tube where the boot goes from the carburetor to the crankcase as I've had two of the Kawasaki FVH 721 motors dump fuel into the crankcase and being a vertical shaft motor the gas cause the sump cover seal to open up and dump ALL the oil AND the gas on the ground after I put that drain tube with( a fuel filter stuck on the end of it to keep the dust out ) it just peed fuel onto the ground instead of dumping it into the crankcase ... Can't really do that on that little L head motor !

I would like to know a little more about your Kawasaki motor putting gas in The oil ? I just got a Ferris mower doing the same thing, guy said motor was bad, but it only has 300 hours on it, it cranks and runs but gas is in the crankcase

@@chrislayton4025 for some reason the fuel pumps on these things don't stop fuel like they do on a motorcycle pulse pump ...you got to get that needle and seat to stop leaking maybe get a new kit for the carburetor and install an upgraded inline fuel filter (I use the reusable mr. Gasket style filters or equivalent knock off filter off of eBay) and maybe a shut-off valve and turn it off every time you Park you're mower for extra precaution a couple of my Ferrises I drilled and installed an actual overflow tube like a motorcycle carburetor I know my little 1500 Ferris I just have barbed 3/16 fitting I poked a hole in it was a ice pick into the lowest point of the PVC tube the goes from the carburetor to the crankcase it has to be at the lowest point to work and you have to modify the barb so it just barely sticks through the rubber or cut a slit in it that equals about flush with the rubber so that the gas doesn't actually build up and can find its way out ...and be sure and change out that contaminated oil and filter

I have a ClubCar with a Kawasaki 290 and seem to have the same problem. In changing my oil, I noticed it to be super thin with gas in it. I replaced the carburetor because of watching one of your videos regarding the float staking, drained the old oil and refilled. Cart runs now, but still smoking, and I think fuel is still getting in the oil. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Unit did set for about four months before I change the carburetor, but then I changed the carburetor and changed the oil as well. Cart cranks and runs OK, but still smoking. Please help!

Hey MM quick question off topic. Do you use Stihl brand starter rope or something else you find better? If so was looking for some suggestions. Like having different sizes around for the things I work on, but don't know if it makes sense to have a bunch of 200' rolls laying around.
