And the Panamanian government just shifted recognition from Taipei to Beijing as the sole representative of China in the international community only in 2017 under former president Juan Carlos Valera and his chief diplomat+vice president Isabel de St. Malo. For obvius reasons; US allow our independence, built the first interoceanic railway, the first canal, the first brige to link both saparated lands of our country and allow us to use the US Dollar currency since 1904. It does not matter how you "feel" about who really owned the channel. It was peoperty of the USA, just like Rammstein is property of the USA inside Germany. And if Panama or Germany act up about it, they get the boot. That's just how it is. Now, because of Panama's incompetence they had to sell the harbors to China who offer favorable conditions to Chinese ships over US ships. Don't expect the US to be chill about that.

Yup, it was built by people from my village, Huadu district on the outskirt of Guangzhou in southern china. 80% of the Chinese population in Panama originated from my village. In our ancestral booklet, quite a few went to build the Panama Canal.

Well china's has not invested in Panama as it has done in other latin American countries eventhought there is a large Chinese population in the country,Panamá and china have just recently been formally doing business for most of the millennium Panamá did business with Taiwan however back in 2017 they renounced to acknowledge Taiwan's independence and froze relations with Taiwan to be able to start with China, China will never be able to fully influence Panamá since the country is very independent on its own economic and the USA depends on the canal functions, China is just a passing cloud in the Panamanian sky if anything the only things they have help Panamá with is the new bridge over the canal and even that Panama has fully invested their on money on it china is just helping with the logistic. @@medx1553 Hi there. Its not entirely true that Chinese migrated because of Colonization. Yes, there are majority of Chinese migrated during colonization period but not all. Chinese had been migrating to the States, SEA, Middle East as early as Song Dynasty (probably around 800 years ago). There are also majority of Chinese who came to South East Asia to do business, in fact there are plenty successful Chinese business man during the colonization period. Traces of migration can even be found as early as Han dynasty which is probably more than 1800 years ago.

It’s rather important to note that Panama actually recognized the ROC (Taiwan) instead of mainland China for over 100 years, first establishing relations in 1912. It wasn’t until June 2017 that Panama switched recognition to the People’s Republic of China. Therefore, only five years ago, Panama still recognized the ROC as the “legitimate China”. Does the addition of numerous infrastructure projects in Panama make it a popular and probably incentive and reason to switch diplomatic relations? It’s very likely in this day and age, especially with China emerging as an economic powerhouse of the world. Just something to note! Fun fact of the day.
