As a Dutch person I love seeing Ray in these video’s. Although I knew the term “waterpomptang” I always thought it got its name as a tool to remove water pumps. Until Ray explained the handle of the plier is similar to old waterpumps. Amazing what you can still learn.

Tip for Ramond; Hé Ray - vermoedelijk de langste timmerman in NZ - ik vind het altijd leuk om jou bij Scott in de video te zien. Soort van Nederlandse trots. Exact same marital thickness planer I have. Had it for about 10 years. You won't be disappointed with it; for its size it does a great job. Hook it up to a dust extractor to assist getting the woodchips out the way. Can you include Ray in some of the Q & A? I'd be interested in knowing the ratio of hours you spend a week in; planning, buying matrials; doing the job; time taken up positioning and recording; number of cameras you use; time spent at the computer preparing the episode; etc. Love your work guys!

We see a lot of noise induced hearing loss in tradies and it often is because they don’t bother with proper PPE/ear protection. Paying with permanent damage to their ears later. Thanks mate!

Kudos for using the advanced design technique of letting the floor tell part of the story of the house and not getting perfectionist about trying to make everything "match". Please consider limewash paint for at least one of the large walls. It can provide a lush color and subtle texture combination that can turn a wall into something to contemplate.

Nice thickness planer! I use them all the time and I’ve noticed sometimes the direction of the grain matters with blowout or chip out. It’s nice when it’s figured out and it makes for less sanding.

Hi Scott and Jess. Great channel. Finally got round to subscribing to you guys. I have nearly seen all your videos after coming across your channel just before you moved to Nelson. I found one of your videos on building steps really helpful as my son is living/working on a dairy farm in Waikato and previous contract milker built a deck in front of house but didnt make steps. son is really busy as is owner so I offered to build some steps but stringer method looked to complicated so used your series of box type steps method. It worked well and the owner was pleased enough to pay me a few hundred $$, crazy, as I was just doing it for my family to access deck easier. So thank you Scott for the great tuitional videos. I laughed so hard when you tried to use the standard vacuum head to suck up the thicknesser chips. They would fill your vacuum so fast. You need a proper dust extractor like your table saw extractor to deal with them. 😅

Square bit screws originate from here in Canada, square bit is called a “Robertson/Robbie” advantage of it is that the screw won’t fall off in any position it is being held. Great work on the Reno… I’ve been watching since prior to your move and also past videos.

I love my Makita thicknesser! I’m sure you’ll get plenty of good use out of it too. Perhaps look at upgrading the cutter block to a spiral type to give a cleaner finish and easier to sort blades out when you inevitably hit a hidden nail!

A tip for your track saw. Place a piece of painter's tap over the window to the nut that secures the blade. This will greatly increase dust collection.

You can buy a custom plastic cover for lot of plunge saws to do same job,same result as tape, the increase in dust collection is pretty impressive

Hi following from Scotland what got me hooked to your channel was the deluge hammer, I own one and it's the best hammer in the world bar none. After 28 years of joinery I developed carpool tunnel syndrome.. Maybe all in my mind but CTS gone in three weeks of using deluge hammer. Also puts a 4 inch nail quicker than any eastwing. Keep up the good work!

Keep all that trimmings/sawdust etc from milling the Rimu. DON"T throw it away. Store it in a dry place and you will find that it is perfect when put though an old coffee grinder to fill nail holes in your Rimu floors. They will simply disappear if added to a little glue.

Your Carbatec dust extractor would be perfect if it could be connected. I have a similar dust extractor connected to my thicknesser and there are next to no chips flying about.

Thank you Ray the carpenter for telling me the plumber how the waterpomptang get´s its waterpomp into the name!! Allways believed it to have something to do with the water in the plumbing job, never found the pomp to have a good explanation. Happy with this knowledge!! Allthough i am not sure if the size of pliers you where using on that macadamia still is a waterpomptang, it sure has the same handle style. I know that one either as a "Zweedse tang" or in short as a "moordenaar"

If you regularly resaw rimu lumber, a bandsaw would be an easier option. It is a thinner kerf. It also gives you the excuse to purchase a decent quality bandsaw for your carpentry business.

Always interesting to see how you do things. Looks like those last floorboards were quite tight to the wall. In the UK, we'd normally leave a gap around the perimeter of up to 10mm for expansion, which is then covered by the skirting. Congratulations on the 400th video coming up!!

Apologies if this has been mentioned before. Floor sanding will take care of any imperfections, even a couple of mm difference in height, especially if using correct tools. Taking time to plane to correct thickness is not necessary.

Hey Scott! Love the channel, watched every episode. I do have a question. I have recently done an addition of 15 square meters to my house off my living room. Super happy with it and just finishing up some of the paint work now before we can start using it again. But I was really stunned at the amount of rubbish it generated. Not really the cut offs, but more all the packagings, delivery pallets, plactic tubes, plastic straps, etc. If there is one item you would "greenify" based on your experience that you think would make a big impact, what would it be? Personally I think making the plastic tubes (that have things like silicone, glue and grout in them) out of a biodegradible material would make a huge impact.

Also I have started looking into mitre gauges for the table saw and I would invest in a good mitre gauge, especially one that allows you to move the fence or attach a different fence. And get one, that allows you to set a wide range of angles. The mitre gauge that came with my table saw, only allows me to go from 30 degrees to 90 degrees. But if you buy a good mitre gauge that allows you to set 5 degree increments, then you can cut tapered legs. I am thinking of buying the "Incra Miter 1000"...

I m from Brazil, the house I live is woodframe (pretty rare in the region I live: São Paulo metropolitan zone) it was built I guess in the 90s or late 80s, it is certently built with hardwood, I cant be certain but it could be Ipê or Jatoba, or I can be completly wrong about the species, but it is definitly a hard wood. Ipê, which you may know as Brazilian Oak, is an extrimely hard and beautiful wood which today is pretty control and can only be cut in some cases and some subspecies of it.

I got a question for the upcoming Q&A: This may be a bit specific. But I believe that if you are gonna start out with purchasing battery-driven tools. you should rotate with buying one tool to attach stuff (Like a drill) and then buy something to cut/remove stuff (Like a multicutter or a circular saw). My question is then: What tools do you think are a must or necessary as a "First buy" priority? I personally started with a drill, then bought a circular saw, then a driver, finally a angle grinder and now lastly a multicutter. This is all in the BOSCH Professional 18V Platform.
