WHY is this Lawn Mower ROPE SO HARD to PULL??? Sloppy Valve Lash and Other Issues - FIXED !!!

Well, to be fair, the guy has owned the machine for 20 years, and overall it's in pretty good shape. And he sharpened the blade, another good step of maintenance. So we won't be too hard on him. I'm just glad we figured out how to fix it. Thanks for watching!

There are some small equipment manuals which indicate checking valve lash after the first 50 or 100 hours and then on a regular basis thereafter at 100 hours or annually. Also, if you support the machine underneath to raise the front end an inch or two it will help avoid oil leaking out of the sump when the valve cover is removed.

My Dad had a JS60H, same deck and motor but with the high wheels. I need to do a valve adjustment on it but I can't loosen the hex key lock in order to adjust the valve...any suggestions?

how about the outer nut? Does that loosen with a wrench? Maybe try using a small impact driver for the inner hex bolt while holding the outer nut with a wrench.
