Yes... "always be open to new ideas that contradict your opinion," is probably the most valuable mantra by which we all should live. Oh! I totally forgot, I wanted to let you know about an amazing bargain I got a few months ago. There was this audiophile that was selling gear and I found this vintage JBL passive studio monitor, the guy said it was worthless because it was missing the pair so... I bought it for almost nothing, removed the bass speaker, made a table with the cab and build a new cab out of plywood. I also bought an old Yamaha stereo amplifier from this guy (again, for really cheap because it didn't have that "collector value" BS) and with some old stuff I had lying around made it into a fully functional gig-ready bass rig and OH BOY! It sounds amazing, my bass immediately went to groove town. No pedals, no extra EQ, no compression, just the flat EQ of the amp and that old speaker on a cheap-ass plywood cab. I'm pretty excited about making a video showing off this, and all of it was because of your show! (And also am I looking forward to properly try it on a mix) So, thank you very much and of course, fuck you, Glenn :)

Hey Glenn, That's also valid for when you play in bandcontect, not only when you are recording at the studio. Lowering the Bass and raise the mids helped a lot in the band context to be able to hear my self better and we were able to lower the rehersal volume by a lot. Same with the tube screamer....I don't like the sound when i play alone, but it just gets handy in the band context and it also doesn't bother me I'm not quite convinced that guitars don't make any difference. We were recording in the studio some weeks ago. At one Song I recorded the Rythem party with by Ibanze AZ, but for the leads I had to change to my RG, because I got too much pick noise on my AZ. Our studio guy agreed with that. Not sure if it's the guitar or my technic on that guitar, but it's the only guitar I tend to lower the tone pot a bit, when there are too much high frequency for my taste. Cheers and keep on with your helpful content. By the way, I'd love if you bring back those 13 reasons why videos and also a stupid musician text episode from time to time.

GLEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!!!! :) once again *love* the new direction of the channel!! I have a question regarding noise from guitar pickups. I’ve been recording semi professionally for a while and this is always an issue. I have a Furman voltage regulator, the Morley Hum Eliminator, the Morley Hum Exterminator. I am also using Decimator noise gates to lessen this. The hum I am speaking of is the stuff you get pointing the guitar at the monitor that can be lessened (but not eliminated) by pointing the guitar at different places in the room. Is there something obvious that I’m missing? Do you have any suggestions on how maybe this might be something to clean up using RX? Maybe a noise profile? I always worry about cutting unintended frequencies with stuff like that, but maybe I shouldn’t? I have had this issue pretty much everywhere, with multiple guitars and multiple setups, even a laptop rig, running on a battery, at a relatively remote cottage into a Audient interface (my normal interface is a UAD 710d into a Fireface 802 - I don’t say that to flex, just to give you an idea of the setup). Any help would be amazing. I get in a mix this likely matters only in few places, but I’m positive I’m not the first person to obsess about this issue lol! Thanks in advance!!

However, if we are talking metal, which always has been the focus of this channel, when are you ever going to just hear a guitar and amp by itself in a room? If you ever want to leave your bedroom, the important thing is how your guitar/amp sounds in context IN A MIX!
@jonthecomposerАй бұрын
About pickup magnet pull: I figured out years ago through multiple bass setups that pickups (at least on a bass) will affect the string tone, intonation, and sustain. This usually occurs on the low B. The string starts to sound rubbery above the 10th - 14th fret. Also, if it is the magnetic pull, you'll notice intonation starting to go sharper up the neck even if 1-12 frets are spot on. Bass is just like a larger guitar in it's most fundamental sound creation physically speaking. So if it happens on bass, I'm sure it can happen on guitar. The way I found out is just by experimenting. I once had a 5 string with that tone and intonation problem. I was trying a lot of things, but when I took the low B off and it kind of "snapped" straight into my pickup's magnets, a little lightbulb came on. Now, every bass I've had since then whose B string had tonal or intonation issues, I've just lowered the pickups on. Sure, there's a tradeoff between signal and sound. But to me it's a no-brainer. Sound every time. And although it may seem a bit unneeded, I do often play up to the 24th fret on my low B.
@alexnavarro9285Ай бұрын
This is where being in the room makes a difference (with chappers ears). Ive played different guitars with different pickups in studios (to record) and pickups make do make subtle differences in the room. But in the RECORDED playback, those room differences go away. Ive noticed right away that in the studio (recordings) the differences really came in the cabinet and mics.

Testing temperature/humidity changes is fun and interesting. I worked in a testing lab for a major maker of copiers and such, and we would spend our days in a large walk-in cooler that might be 90 degrees with 100 percent humidity one day and 34 degrees with 10 percent the next, and we'd see how it affected paper coming out of machines, documenting where/when/how they failed, etc. Wild stuff I had never thought of before. I never thought about speakers but after seeing what I saw in that job, yeah, I'd bet it would change how the speaker moves and reacts. Probably minimally, though, given it'd have to be warm enough in the room to be able to actually play the guitar.

Glennnnnnnnn I'm with you on the whole tone/speaker thing. I know that the single most detrimental tone changing/tone shaping part of a guitarists sound is the speakers. That said I have a question. I work exclusively with amp sims now. I DO notice a difference in what's recorded depending on which guitar/pick ups I use. Here's the set up: I use Antelope Audio Zen for my interface, Sonar for my daw, Neural DSP Gojira and Otto Audio 11 11 11 11 (thanks to you) ALL of my guitars have DR DDT strings 65 - 13 and 90 percent of them have EMG 81s in the bridge. Now... I just bought an ESP E-II Arrow (fucking phenomenal guitar. Japanese woodworkers are some of the best in the world) this guitar has the Fishman Fluence Moderns in it and immediately noticed a difference in the sound I'm recording. The clarity and "bite" is so noticeable that I was like wait a min. So I A/B'd my Jeff Hanneman signature with the 81s and the difference in the sound was drastic. So like the critical thinker I believe I am I did a test. 4 guitars Same strings 4 different pickups Fishman Moderns - ESP EII EMG 81- LTD JH600 Duncan Slug - LTD M 1987 Duncan NAGUS - Solar X Svart All input and output levels were set exactly the same. What I found when looking at the visual representation of the recorded riff was that the Fishman and the Slug had the highest output. The Slug is the hottest pickup I think on the market, 48k I believe but it's clarity is not on the level of the Fishman. Now. Each guitar did have a specific sound. Yes I know tone wood is bullshit when dealing with that much gain but they did sound different. I can hear it. So I guess the question is. When anything changes the tone, even slightly, but still audible, wouldn't it in fact be a part of the tone? I guess the analogy would be the salt and pepper on a steak. It adds to the flavor and just isn't the same as eating it without it. Remember, this is in an all digital realm. I wish there was a way to show you what I'm talking about. Fuck it maybe I'm just crazy but I hear it and see it. Thanks bro, I truly appreciate everything that you do and have learned a lot more in the last 5 years of watching your show than I did in the last 25 years of recording Cheers

regarding the temp and humidity thing, I'm not sure how much it changes things in the studio, but as a live engineer, it's something I deal with all the time at outdoor shows. To the point where I have to adjust mixes set during a warm daytime sound check and then the show being after sunset and the temperature drops. I can send you some hard data research papers on the discord if you want them.

First off, keep the sped up voice, second thank you for all the great advice. I'm way more of a live musician than studio but I still glean a lot of great info on gear and more from all the reviews you do. With that said, I'm searching for a hard rock/alternative/punk tone from my setup. Are there any particular speakers you'd recommend for that? Thanks again, you're awesome man!
@SloppyGoatАй бұрын
Hey Glenn, I'd really love to see you test my claim that temperature and humidity make definitely noticeable differences in everything. That would be an interesting episode. I feel honored that you mentioned my comment, and even thought enough to maybe even test that, yourself. That would be interesting!! Even though I already know how it affects guitars. And if it affects guitars that way, it definitely affects everything else that way. I can actually see my frets sticking out in the winter time, just a tad more. And you definitely don't want to have a guitar dressed on the ends, during the winter time. Because when it expands again, in the summer, your frets are going to be too short. It's fncked up here, in MN. It goes to such extremes in humidity. I'm the guy with the degree in electronics theory and I've studied a shitload of quantum physics. I know how these things work. And it's really obvious here, in these extreme conditions. ✌️🤘😎 Seriously, it sucks. 🙄 I know it gets cold and shit in Canada too, but Minnesota is one of the harshest fucking places you can live. You say you don't see many examples? But there are examples everywhere. Like heat sinks, on electronic devices. Everything electronic depends on temperature, to some degree, and wood definitely reacts to humidity, or lack of. It shrinks and expands, just like anything does. 😉 Oh yeah, if I can help out, let me know. I could run those cables so clean in there, all you'd see is some clean looking wiring boxes. With everything numbered. ✌️

Hey Glenn, regarding the "in the room" tone, i'd be interested in your opinion on how that affects the player and his performances. I mostly perform live and i use a straight to FOH modelling rig and also a beefy tube amp rig from time to time. I definitely feel more comfortable with the amp blasting behind me and therefore my performances seem to be better. Though most people in the audience wouldn't give a hoot. Is the "in the room sound" just a placebo and even if so, shouldn't we still use that placebo if it slightly improves performances?

Speaker impedance: Choosing a different amount of ohms of resistance in a speaker possibly makes a difference in sensitivity. Higher impedance, aka resistance, means you will need more energy to do the same amount of work moving electrons through the coil. So in theory, a 16Ω speaker will have a slightly lower sensitivity rating. (However Celestion only provides 1 measurement for both impedances) The important part is that you can run a 16Ω speaker at 8Ω by running 2 of them in parallel. So if your amplifier is only rated for 8Ω loads and you want to run 2 speakers, you have to either run two 16Ω speakers in parallel, or 2 two 4Ω speakers in series. Frequency response between the different impedances is usually negligible, and falls within standard speaker deviation. In theory, there is a possibility that lower impedance could lead to faster transient response, but you are literally adding only 8Ω of resistance to electrons moving at the speed of light, so good luck measuring that, much less hearing it.

It's hard to say not to do the sped up voice because I've grown accustomed to it. Especially since I've been a viewer since 2014, when your VCs were in the double digits. You even answered one of my questions way back. My least favorite thing, if any, is the preview. I'm already going to check out the video, I don't need a preview. However, I do understand that I'm a long time viewer, so I just overlook that and can bear a couple of seconds for the preview.

My band will borrow a big living room at a friends house to track our next album "live together", at least the foundations, if we nail a solo the DI goes straight down to the solo channel and we can pat our own musical egos on the back hehe Reason is our rehearsal room is dry and dead with zero room reverb, so we will try this out in order to put some room mics for the drums. The singer can track his vocals in a room on another floor, and if theres some bit of string leak in drum OHs or room mics we dont care its rock n roll! We will make one Cubase project per song and track it over and over in a row we more easily than using lanes or track versions can just listen to what sounds best. Will have a metronome but not being full authoritarian about grid alignment. Any suggestions what to keep in mind before doing this? It's the first time I actually track any of my own metal bands live together, which I have really wanted to do and seems like tons of fun and headaches too

What Rob Chapman does with pickups is easy. He knows when it's an active. Do you know how he knows Glenn? It's easy. Actives do not decay or feedback the same way that passive pickups do. That's how he does it. Hell, I could do it. He also knows his guitar shapes and models, and which pickups come in it. You're right. It's a magic trick. Still fun to watch. He got every SINGLE one wrong on the "Where is the guitar made?" Blindfold Challenge! Lol

On the sped up comments, it really doesn’t bother me. Never has. However, I have ADHD so I don’t like change so it may mess with me. But not enough to not watch viewers comments. It’s my favorite weekly KZbin show. I look forward to seeing it every week. ❤

Glen, I personally like the sped-up comments because I read quickly and when the comment is on-screen the timing of it being read and me reading it is closer than when you read it normally and lag behind where I am. It reminds me of being in early grade school reading group. It also isn't as much fun without the chipmunk voice.

I'm listening to it on Audible too, I'm just at the part where it talks about his family revisiting their homeland (trying to not give too much away here). It's a heartbreaking, eye-opening, funny, and emotional read/listen. In fact, I don't have the superlatives to do it justice. You don't need to be a Rush fan to enjoy this, just read it/listen to it.

I prefer the sped-up voice. I often listen to your videos while doing something else in the meantime and if I'm not actually watching the video I can't make out when you are reading a comment or actually responding. About that pickup comment: True, some pickups can be told apart while playing in the room. On a recording the differences are minimal.

Cheers from Serbia!🇷🇸 I think the story about humidity making a difference on the sound is mostly psychoacoustic. Humidity and temperature change how your ears operate and that changes your perception of what you actually hear. Combined with the effects the humidity has on the speakers it would probably be enough to actually make a small difference. But it would be impossible to measure and to prove. Love your videos and attitude. Long time fan!

Glenn I can hear the difference whether Andy Latimer from Camel is using a Strat or a Les Paul on those old Camel records. But that's it. I can never tell what guitar it is, just whenever it's a single coil or a humbucker, it proves you are right. Just to note I only know it was a Strat and Les Paul because that's what he used back then. We're not superhuman. Great stuff Glenn, cheers from England.

A cool idea for a sustain test might be seeing the frequencies per each kind of foam / scrunchy / fret wrap used (per all of us metal, high gain players).
@ikestoddard2458Ай бұрын
You said something about impedance. If I remember correctly from my youth at Carleton in Ottawa, it is an output transformer issue. There should be a tap in the output windings for each different speaker load. Some transformers have several, one for each load of 2(!), 4, 8, and 16 ohms. Depends on the builder. (I graduated in ‘77, so I hope I am remembering right.)

About the vintage tubes some member of the discord sent you, I have no doubt there won't be a tonal shift, but it'd be cool to see the comparison on transients, compression and stuff, which doesn't show on frequency responses (that goes for any other test you might come to make too). Show us null tests in addition to the frequency spectrum too!

Speaking of anime, I recently came across Space Battleship Yamato here on KZbin. I'd seen it as Star Blazers as a kid, so it was a treat to see the series in its original unedited incarnation (with English subtitles). They had to do a fair amount to "North Americanize" the show.

The impedance of the speakers is more about electronics and how loud things get mainly. TL;DR: Plugging 16 ohm speaker to modern amp probably does shit nothing except loosing minimal amount of volume which isn't much. But going lower especially when all amps are designed for either 8 or 16 ohm loads and all 16 ohm cabs usually are built while taking the 8 ohm speakers into account so they will drive them hard but nothing will break. Going even lower (like 2x8 ohm equaling 4 ohm cab) however will probably break something in your amp unless it's built for it. 8 and 16 ohm speakers probably don't have much difference as long as we are speaking about modern amps which are usually made for 8 ohm speakers, nothing too dramatic happens if you add twice as much resistance to the mix except you will effectively loose half of the signal power (P=U^2/R and U=sqr(PxR), 100W amp designed for 8 ohm speaker will send about 28V RMS signal and that for 16 ohm speaker would be about 50W, otherway around 100W amp for 16 ohm speaker would send 40V RMS signal which would be 200W for 8 ohm speaker). Technically the outcoming sound will just be louder or quieter a bit (we are just talking about doubling or halving the power while dB scale is logarithmic with 2dB being 10 times as loud as 1dB). However the 100W amp designed for 16 ohm speaker won't be happy about running 8 ohm speaker because there isn't the designed current sink and that means there will be more current and so more heat in the other components. 8 ohm speaker to 16 ohm designed amp shouldn't be that bad these days since everyone and their dog should take that into consideration when designing an amp because majority of the speakers are 8 ohms. It will get "fun" with some older cabs like 3x12" where all the speakers are in parallel meaning the resistance of the cab is just 2.67 ohms, which means the 100W amp giving 28V signal to 8 ohm speaker consuming 3.5A would be sending that 28V signal and getting almost 300W sucking 10.5A, and while the 100W signal for the 16 ohm speaker is 40V and just 2.5A, making the mistake and putting the 3x12" to that and you get whooping 600W signal at 15A and that extra strain in the amp will break something.
@cnilecnile6748Ай бұрын
Yeah, you will either blow an output transformer winding, or a speaker coil winding. Just remember that 8+8 = 4, not 16. Bigger risk of smoke from the amp, or voice coils coming through the speaker grill with a tube amp, because tubes run at a much higher voltage. Just replace them with whatever ohm value is already there, and you will be ok, and will hear the actual difference with your new speaker.

3:26 hold up Glen. The last time I was in a studio other than my drummer’s home studio, the engineer put multiple mics in front of my amp and I’m pretty sure one of them was to capture a little bit of the room. It should also be noted that the best recordings get the sound right at the source. Which means that if the sound in the room and the sound on the recording are different,….you’re doing it wrong.
