I moved into a neighborhood that was once a family farm and “Farm” in the name. They’ve kept 2 silos as part of the aesthetics next to an open air event barn. So, not weird to see them still in the neighborhood 😊

This was a fun episode to watch. I work as an environmental consultant and we work with developers to identify wetlands, headwater drainage features, and the like to make sure they avoid/preserve/buffer those wet areas to maintain the integrity of the local watershed. It would be cool if the next iteration of the game took microtopography into consideration with more small streams, wetlands, and other natural areas that you have to build around, enhance, or reroute.

That'll be natural as Cities Skylines 2 ups the fluid simulation. Right now water behaves as huge jelly blobs with no viscosity. As these get smaller and acquire some viscosity, water physics might become even more impressive than it already is (for a computer program that hasn't been made with high resolution fluid simulation in mind).

22:17 Seeing this fence being added to the new neighborhood makes me homesick for my childhood home. I grew up in a neighborhood that was carved out of farmland. Days when I missed the after school bus and had to walk home, I'd walk past several horse pastures on my way home that used that style fence. If I was lucky, there'd be a horse on that side of the pasture wanting some pats and attention. [Mumbles] years later, and the pastures have also been replaced by houses. But that fence remains as a reminder of what once was.

To still use Building Themes, set the entire city to International and then just set up each district like you normally would. I was having the same problem with the array errors after I bought Financial Districts. Game was unplayable. Someone suggested this trick and it worked perfectly. Themes still works and no more array errors. District Styles always ignores some of my themes and just grows whatever it wants.

They are just so few and far between all the Verde Beach episodes, which I do appreciate, but the level of detail and satisfying visuals truly lie with the two aforementioned cities. Such a great episode, I prefer these more realistic sub-suburban builds! I know it's tedious and time consuming, but I'd utilize moveit to make sure the driveways are connected to the actual street as it definitely kills the realism a bit. I know the cul-de-sac homes will be a little more challenging but maybe the use of surface painter could help. So excited to see what develops next!

I grew up sorta on this style of suburb into rural cross over. behind my neighborhood development were farms (I was in walking distance of an orchard). And we'd have silos remaining and I always loved looking at them. And we greatly lacked that type of access added here. if I wanted to go into town I'd have to bike or walk on the main county route into town, no sidewalks, 40mph roads. Was not fun (and why my mom wouldn't let us, lol) Inside our neighborhood off the county round had sidewalks and allowed inter neighborhood play, but gosh. Every road needs SOME sidewalk. So I appreciate the path network and bike roads :)

I live in a rural subdivision, that once upon a time was military barracks, then just farmland, and now houses converted from old barracks. I would say maybe adding flower fields in some of those blanker spaces. Since this used to be fertile farmland, and wetland, there would be flowering fields for at least some of it. When you talked about cotton I thought instantly of those fields of red flowers we get here when they stopped planting cotton. Just an idea :) Loved this episode!

My community, Northshore (which is on the south shore of the lake lol), looks and feels a lot like what you've built here. We're about ten minutes outside of town, but instead of being surrounded by farms, we're surrounded by forest (the neighborhood sits on land that was part of a very large private hunting camp). Aside from that, you nailed the vibe of my neighborhood. Despite being surrounded by forest, our homes all have the same four or five trees: one in the front yard, two or three in the back. And it is incredibly dark at night; we have maybe one light per street, usually halfway down each street. Great job capturing the look and feel of the area!

I've seen these types of neighborhoods pop up here & there and I think you've captured that setting very VERY well. Regarding adding forests, sometimes there are small stands of trees in the previous farm fields that get incorporated into the new developments. Also, the original few homes would have significantly larger trees from the new ones. I would also think there would be some basic bench seating in a few places around the pond to feed the ducks, read a book, etc. Thanks again for an excellent video.

This is a very nice build! I used to live in New England towns that have/had bike or bridle paths (Scituate and Arlington, Massachusetts). The paths usually had weeds, bushes and trees grown up on either side even where there were houses nearby. So I would go in and add some landscaping to the new subdivision's bike paths in order to give the houses view privacy as well. Also may I suggest Detaignemint Pond for the body of water since these sort of developments typically have stormwater detention ponds? Thanks.

New to the series, as someone who's sick of where they currently live, I appreciate how much thought you put into foot traffic, too many places I've lived away from the city have been impossible to leave without a car And that's probably why I tend to appreciate living in more urbanized, city setting. Just moved to a rural area but it's on the edge of an urban area. So about a 15min drive from a major center as well as great access to major highways. But why I prefer the rural side is because of the lower density, it's situated quite close to a nature reserve and because of the wetlands they built a man made lagoon so we have access to our own beach in an area where the closest large body of water is at least 60km away.

I've seen a bunch of through traffic through the neighbourhood. You mentioned the layout is intended to prevent that, but I guess that's not enough to dissuade C:S vehicle AI. Perhaps it makes sense to slightly lower the speed limit, so cars are more likely to go around? If nothing else, banning heavy traffic would at least stop trucks from barrelling through the streets all the time.

So two things about that neighborhood. There’s a chance that somebody would plant that forest. A local school might use it as an opportunity to teach conservation, and it’s also possible that Johnson Aggregates might consider parceling some of that land out as carbon offsets. Given the pollution generated by mining it could help improve their public image. Also, given the measurement of the parcel of land, locals might start calling it the Hundred Acre Green.

A improvement would be some variation in the grassland on which this neighborhood is placed, along with some bushy & higher grass areas. Perhaps also some hedge rows instead of fencing. Also adding some picnic benches and the likes in the 'gardens' would bring more character as that is what people will do often if they have the space and early on before there is budget for grander things like pools.

This is how my childhood neighborhood was developed, I'm pretty sure, from farmland to a rural-suburban development. It's since been re-developed to be much denser, with smaller land parcels and cookie cutter homes to match, but you can still see most of the telltale signs. The streets are long and meandering, confusing, and grossly cul-de-sac'd. There are still smaller homesteads where agricultural production takes place - a couple of crop fields, a small livestock operation and poultry as well. Many of the original homes still draw well water and have signs on their property advising the local authorities of that. There's a stormwater pond that has been turned into exactly the same kind of local park with much of the same foliage, walking and biking paths, and climbing structures. The lighting is also extremely sparse and relegated to intersections. Really the only thing that's different is that the multi-family home buffer between my neighborhood and the city isn't duplexes, but rather they're smaller 6-12 unit apartment buildings. It was very cool to watch this play out, and how I can see everything here for what it used to be, at least in some scope. :)

I could see more “restored prairies” in the undeveloped centers of some of those blocks. Probably with those split rail fences around them, and possibly with wildlife viewing platforms nearby. Also, viewing platforms near the pond, as that would also likely teem with birds and other wildlife.

🐟 i don't think is plausible, but living in a rural neighborhood with a pond so close, i totally see someone putting some low cost fish in the pond, just to fishing them now and then. I saw that sometimes, when a pond close to a city or something would have someone bringing some type of fish that lives in ponds, just to be able to do fishing near home. It could even be officialized with a small fishing deck in the pond

Reminds me of Queens, NY when development was encroaching on the remaining farms in the late 1950's

Suggestion: I would've added decals to the ground as a repurposed farm land would've experienced uneven vegetation. You would've have even grass like that.

So a small note. When adding trees to the neighborhood you mentioned that you had no large trees in your tree selection, then added some. You later mentioned that since it was previously farmland there wouldn't be a forest. So where did all the large trees you planted come from? A young neighborhood like this wouldn't have many, if any, large trees. Just a thought. Also, those are some big, empty lots. I would suggest either putting in a few more homes or filling the lots with things like pools and swing sets.

This new development looks just like one in Minden, Nevada that was actually reclaimed from Bentley Farms. It's called Windhaven if you wanted to give it a look.

It took a few months but I’m finally all caught up on Clearwater County. Loved every moment. One thing that’s been bugging me for weeks is in Van Bruen at the transit hub and train station. The crosswalk to access the ferry across the street isn’t right outside the station doors. Passengers traveling between the station and the Ferry have to walk down the street to access the crosswalk or (if the game allowed) jaywalk to directly access the ferry which is an accident waiting to happen. Can you move the crosswalk to right outside the train station doors?
