I just turned 54 and I reduced the number of running sessions last year for a marathon in April, the result was 10 minutes + for my previous marathon. So, during the summer, I increased the number of days I ran up to 6. The result was that in my latest marathon, I finished 7 minutes faster. I know this is thinking in long-term health plan, but as long as I do my strength sessions, and rest days I see my progress.

Great video, on a number of levels. I make my 'week' 9 or 10 days to fit in strength and recovery.

As a now 60y old runner doing 5 marathons within 4 years of running I can say for me the mileage of running I did per marathon training did pretty much determine the result of the marathon and the 20+ miles long run(s) before the taper were a good indicator of the race.
