Why is trying to place items when building settlements so annoying?

Granted, I'm just not very creative in general, but still in order to build anything I feel I need to download the place anywhere mod that gets rid of the red outline.

At least it's not as bad as Fallout 76's building, where it'll literally turn green and then still say you can't place it for some reason that isn't fully explained to you. I made the mistake of trying to make my base out of an existing building and holy shit the engine doesn't know what to do with itself, sometimes putting the items on the roof without warning, sometimes not allowing them at all, sometimes only placing very specific items on the roof. It's absolutely awful.

There's a mod for fallout 4 that lets you place items literally anywhere (including inside floors, wall, etc). It's a godsend for settlement nerds

Yeah... it was such a great idea with such a poor implementation. Snapping is extremely bugged, distance is really hard to nail and you can't scrap a lot of things. A lot of garbage you can remove, but the moment something a normal broom can fix, you can't do anything. In fact, cleaning up in Fallout is just not a thing for some reason, people will live with a 200 years old skeleton in their rooms and never bother to get rid of it.

If you're on PC, the console command "disable" is your greatest tool (as long as you save often so you don't accidentally delete the wrong cell). But yeah, it's strange that cleaning up/repairing buildings wasn't implemented in the game - it seems like it would have been relatively simple to implement something where you could scrap things like roofs and then place a new one on the building.

I still get the problem where i want to get rid of a wall, and i take the wall and spin it to make sure it is safe, and it looks fine, so i scrap it and - get notified the things that were connected to it were returned to the workbench. Then I go crazy because it turns out the game decided stuff across the room is somehow connected to that wall.

Mods are always there but it's fun to learn art of building without them too. Glitching with the pillars, rugs, ashtrays and campfires. The unspoken order of building to make certain unruly pieces snap together. Learning where to place beds, guard stations, salvage stations and crops in areas to create a traffic flow of settlers.

This didn’t make sense but anyway I know that it can be annoying when you’re trying to repair the houses in sanctuary hills and you can’t repair the roof or ceiling or even the walls. All you can do is make the houses look more junky and dilapidated. Settlement building in Fallout 4 is terrible sometimes.

Place Everywhere is pretty much essential. The lack of good building code is why I hate vanilla and have avoided the patch like rabies. You have to use mods really, but the recent patch broke almost everything, so having the unpatched version is vital at least at this time, and possibly forever if you want to use a lot of the older mods.

Use the warehouse beam. Put it next to the item your trying to place then hold a/x to group select the item and it makes it easier to place. Also it wont have to be on the top of air anymore. But when you group select it has to be just the item and the warehouse beam in the vicinity. Or else you’ll be moving more than just the item you want to move.

It’s pretty tricky in F4 sometimes but it really isn’t that bad(but don’t get me started on coastal cottage and hangman Alley. Despise those two.). However in 76 it’s terrible. Way too much red spots when I’m trying to put down a couch!! On top of that, if you’re trying to delete an item, sometimes it won’t let you because it’s attached to something else(even though it really isn’t). My 76 camp looks cool but man it was a brutal process lol 😂

This is why we use rugs to glitch stuff into place. Set it on a rug, move the rug around until the item is where you want it, scrap the rug. The item will drop by the hight of the rug and stay there, even if it's technically illegally placed
