I've always loved Kronenbourg on holidays in France and used to buy it regularly back home. But I noticed a couple of years ago that it's now brewed here and isn't half as good as the French brew. Disappoined that San Miguel is now brewed here as that was always another favourite. When I buy lager now, I always try and get the brands that are still brewed by the original makers in their own country.

Did you drink the 1664? It used to be 6.2 percent alcohol and was almost like a Trappist beer in its richness.... the red and whte cans and bottles of Kronenbourg were the standard lager version.... I am not sure when the change down to 5.5 happened.... I was there 1999-2003

Sad but so true. I cringe at the amount. Of people that drink fosters/ Carling for the rest of their days and are perfectly happy with it. We are fighting a losing war people and I don't understand why people in this country are so far removed from the rest of continental Europe. Every UK brewed continental lager is piss. Without sounding snobbish I haven't picked up a UK brewed lager for myself for the last 3 years. I will only pick up imported stuff from across the continent. I cant believe so many people put up with/ like/ aren't bothered about the skunky, metallic taste of pretty much all UK brewed lagers. Oh well, just have to look after yourself I guess. I have a mate who loves UK brewed Stella, generally only lager he buys, I don't have it in my heart to tell him it's absolute *****. Although he has tried one or 2 lagers on my PD and liked them, he always reverts back to the 4.6% stella

That's mainly because drinking culture changed. UK pub culture used to be some brown beer at your local, darts, pool and enjoying a slow drink after work. Since the 80s and proper nightclubs its just turned into cheap sweet liquid for teenagers to get drunk under the laser lights. These lagers are just made for being downed fast while your dancing and spilling most of it onto the person next to you.. no one even notices what it tastes like which is why i think cider like dark fruits have taken over in that space.

My golden rule with Lager is avoid any 'continental' lager if it's actually brewed in the UK. You say we're not putting up with this, but actually the rise of Real Ale and Craft beer has a lot to do with the complete rubbish the big brewers are making. There simply wouldn't be the market for it if mainstream brews were decent.

They used to brew two different kinds of 1664 in France. One for the UK market which was pretty good and I think 5 percent, then there was the French 1664 which was only available on the continent and was 6.2 percent. A completely different drink. It was never available in large cans in France, only small bottles usually sold as a 6 pack. This was until maybe twenty years ago I guess. Now the French 1664 is down to 5.5 and the French 1664 for the UK market no longer exists. In France they used to have standard Kronenbourg beer in red and white colours (without the 1664) which was 4.8 percent alcohol, now this has gone down to a paltry 4.2. So Kronenbourg in France has also degraded from what it was....

I think the answer is quite simple: as a nation of beer drinkers, it's simply economies of scale. And bigger margins for the producers. We drink so much of the stuff, it makes sense for the brewers to cut corners for bigger profits...You can see my argument clearly in the size of bottles you managed to buy: Ironically it's volume, not quality that matters!

I think they don’t trust us with the extra .5% alcohol, we get quantity not quality. You imagine the French sat at a little cafe/bar with a savoury snack sipping a small lager. Where as we brits go for the big pint with the lads and knock it back in 10 mins. The brewery and government think we are infantile beer drinkers who don’t have time to savour the different flavours.

The bottom line is that people on the continent care more about the quality of their food and drink, and so do their governments. UK governments should regulate food and drink quality but they don't due to industry lobbying. So we consumers must get educated about food and drink quality and refuse to buy, among other things, crap beers. Well done Simon for providing these comparisons! I too wouldn't touch UK brewed Kronenbourg. French Kronenboug is certainly drinkable but its not as good as German or Czech lager. If you really want to take a bullet for us Simon do a comparison between Bremen brewed German Becks and Luton brewed UK "Becks"!

Kronenbourg actually list the ingredients, v.unusual...on there is glucose syrup... something that isn't needed in beer A whole aisle in the supermarket is taken up with multipacks of the rubbish brewed under licence lagers. If they got rid of them they could probably stock hundreds of individual bottles of directly imported continental lagers! But they wouldn't because cost is the absolute obsession of our supermarkets
@jimmy7494
@jimmy7494 Жыл бұрын
I think a big chunk of the people in the UK who drink larger don’t really care about quality, as long as it’s decent, cold and reasonably priced then they are happy. It’s the ale/beer drinkers in the UK who are more likely to care about quality, so there’s no incentive for the larger makers to keep the quality high. Also, correct me if I’m wrong but we don’t have that much history and love for larger like continental Europe - we loved beer, whilst they loved larger more, eventually we switched to larger so a quality larger isn’t in our psyche like Europe. I do remember enjoying kronenbourg in France - it was great - maybe not 8/10 though! Maybe 7- 7.5, but with sun, food and holiday vibes 9.5/10

I disagree. With maybe one or two exceptions, British brewed beer is always mediocre. You stand a better chance of something tasty if you spend £5.00 but you can still be disappointed even at that price. People here buy what others are drinking. Celebrity will help. Look at Clarkson's Hawkstone. Below average lager, priced high and the Brits can't get enough of it.

The alcoholic content is dictated by the duty band that it sits in with even a 0.5% reduction in the beer saving the brewer hundreds of thousands. Purely an economic measure but it obviously will affect the taste. Fosters has recently dropped from 4% to 3.7% on draught too. The tightness of the head is a good observation and I notice it a lot with mainland European brewed lagers. Carlsberg Marstons have recently gained UK rights for distribution of Kronenbourg, taking over from Heineken. I'm not sure what difference this will make to the beer, especially straight away as there might well be lots of Heineken stock to clear in the marketplace before any new Carlsberg Marstons stuff becomes available. This will apply more to packaged versions rather than draught which will be much quicker. It will be interesting to see another comparison with newer Carlsberg Marstons Kronenbourg.

You could direct them to this review and make an update video on the response or lack of response? The British really are being taken for mugs that will drink anything.

Worth doing reviews with Lidl/Aldi copies against the branded gear - hearing rave reviews and... save a bundle - esp on the copy of "Stella"

They add Glucose to the British brew. That always puts me off. Would be Interesting to know if they do with the French stuff.

The British public know what they like and they like what they know. They like their beer British, Brexit proved that. They like their beer rubbish and they like it best if everyone else is drinking the same because they can bond in an acceptable male heterosexual fashion.

one of my favourite brews at the moment is Menebrea, which is still brewed in Italy, and you can tell. Its so smooth and full of flavour and not a hint of the bitterness that British brews get from over use of cleaning chemicals!

@Kermit Idiothunter I have fond memories of me and my son drinking so much Peroni in a Naples bar that you could not see the table for Peroni bottles lol. Perone is currently owned by Asahi which is a Japanese brand, but I doubt they will move production out of Italy. Talking of Brewdog, I was in Japan for a month, a couple of years ago doing a course at Waseda University in Tokyo. There was a British style sports bar run by a Japanese guy who used to live in Brighton. I spent many hours in there because the student accommodation was so bad lol. As well as my beloved Newcastle Brown, they also had a full range of brewdog beers there! great memories

I agree Simon, from now on I will only buy beer that is brewed in country of origin. Since it is quite hot here in Scotland got some Magners Irish cider, yeah you guessed it, brewed in Glasgow not Ireland.

The ABV variance is again an odd choice. I think it is best to be wary about the carbonation details though , as many glasses are made specifically to produce a type of bubble, using etching inside the drinking vessel.

Why do we tolerate terrible beer. Answer I honestly think people do not realise how everything in the UK is being dumbed down if its done behind closed doors and nobody really knows whats going on.

I don't understand how they are so crap. It's not fair especially when they have you paying close to £4 a pint in pubs. It's bad enough if you have to pay £1,79 for a bottle.

The same happened in Germany. It got so bad a law was passed for pure ingredients and brewing. The UK is getting to that point. All about profits not quality. I am sure if a brewery brewed a quality range of beers they would do well in the market.

The main ingredient is beer is water. You can take the exact same recipe but if you are using water from a different source the beer will not be the same. In Canada back in the dark ages beer couldn't be sold other than in the province it was brewed in. There were several brands that were sold all over the country but brewed locally and they didn't taste the same if they came from different places.

Just another victim of the British brewing industry. It is criminal, absolutely criminal, that the British brewing industry advertise these mass produced rubbish lagers as being as authentic to the original version in their respective countries - it skews our perception of the beer breweries and makes us not like it, despite most of us not actually being able to see how the product really tastes in their domestic country.

Now do proper Budweiser Budvar vs Budweiser.Mostly a seperate problem as its more an IP case Whilst I agree 100% its a particularly UK centric problem (dont get me started on UK bewed SuperBock Vs the original), we're not the only market to suffer this shit. We do seem particularly acclimatised to it though. Got to agree we seem to stand still for this. The French would be burning ports if we dared to import our version of a pint of numbers and rightly so.

Agree, my local shop stocks a selection of Polish beers, yes they are slightly more expensive but blow all of the "UK brewed under license" beers out of the water, they are a stronger ABV but so clean compared to the crap we have too put up with with the "big brands". No hangover the next day either......

O Are there any brewed under licence beers that even come close to their continental original? Kronenbourg was the first lager I really liked until a few years ago it changed and I realised it started being brewed in the UK, at that point I stopped drinking it. Now I reject any UK brewed continental lager as they are all pretty dire.

Is the lower ABV in the Uk brewed beers to do with taxes?
@OscarOSullivan
@OscarOSullivan 11 ай бұрын
Most likely yes same in Ireland. A beer at 5 percent lets say Sullivans stout is taxed more than Beamish or Murphys despite the strength difference being 0.8 percent

In beer brewing the water is very important. Local differences make a big difference in the character of the beer. But also the origin of the other ingredients, where dit they get barley and the hops? Every region has it's own specifics. Alcohol.. Yes, alcohol dissolves some aroma and flavour that won't dissolve in water. So more alcohol means more of that flavour and more aroma. You could better compare local British beer with an European brewed ale or bitter.. Probably the British ales and bitters would be the standard.
