Travel with Jeff Sad Virgin America got bought by Alaska. It was a good alternative to the big three, especially at SFO when only United had a meaningful domestic network around the country. (Alaska seems to be retreating from SFO and I might not be too surprised if they concentrate more on SJC and leave SFO to just a United hub which would be really bad for SFO flyers but would probably direct flights away from the disastrous design, weather, and runway configuration at SFO making it unable to expand)

In my humble opinion Jayden, you nailed it exactly. We need Virgin to survive and I believe it will survive. I think it will be a meaner and leaner airline. That is a good shout about pulling back to domestic in the short term. I believe it can return long haul aircraft, albeit at a loss to lessers. The Australian government can claim to have protected Australians by keeping prices down in the domestic market and Virgin survives, so it can grow in the future. Although the government might need to convince the people of Australia.

This is a very humbling and passionate vlog, wasn’t expecting it, but glad you have done it and you should be very proud. The question of a bailout is extremely tricky. We have just seen Fly e go down after being declined government help and Virgin is also in trouble if the borders do not open. Without VA our air fares to the USA will be huge and there’s a risk to BA IAG and the transatlantic agreement, but I won’t go on... let’s hope Virgin makes it through, would love to experience them and all their employees deserve to be able to sleep at night,knowing that their jobs are secured.Thanks for sharing!
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
I guess there are more reasons to bail out Virgin Australia and opposed to Flybe and Virgin Atlantic (not saying that they should haha); Flybe's routes were mostly BA-free. On the other hand, BA fly to a lot of destinations where Virgin Atlantic don't cover. In essence they have very different target customers and markets. Here in Australia, Virgin and Qantas almost have the same market share and routes so there'll be a greater effect to Australian aviation if Virgin Australia goes bust as opposed to Flybe and Virgin Atlantic. Etihad is today partnering up with a capital management firm to save Virgin Australia, let's hope they can raise some funds!! Cheers Nacho!

Great effort with this video Jayden. You make some very valid points as to why we need competition within Australia. Whether that needs to be Virgin Australia, I am not so sure. I have noticed a couple of others in the comment section who hold similar views as myself, so I wont bother going into the details. Virgin Australia has been in trouble long before the virus, whether that is management issues, I don't know. I also hold the view that Qantas has done extremely well over the last view years with the management of Alan Joyce. I think what I am trying to get at is fair competition, can one be assisted by the Government, whilst the other doesn't. I Certainly don't claim to know as much as many people in regards to Aviation management and business, but something is not right and needs drastic changes if they are to receive help in some form.
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Luke, and thanks for your input here :) Whilst I agree we might as well have a new airline here, imo it'll be more difficult than when Virgin came in. QF could potentially expand and make it hard for a new airline to be established in Australia. Qantas could've done this when Ansett collapsed to avoid a new airline coming i.e. Virgin, but they probably didn't see that coming. Now they've learnt their lesson and they will try their best to monopolise and control the Australian travel market as long as they can. The best outcome is of course Virgin Australia keeps flying without government assistance but rather new investors pouring money in along with structural changes in their management.
@LukeCrisp4 жыл бұрын
One World Flyer No problem, it’s an interesting topic! You make good points and maybe I am playing devils advocate here, but say Qantas was to gain market control, do you think it’s really in their best interest to raise prices? They have always been the more expensive airline and recently (last few years) I believe it’s rightly so. If they were to monopolise overtime and gain control of the market, I am not so sure that it would be potentially detrimental to travellers in terms of cost’s, but maybe there could be a lack of innovation on behalf of Qantas. I don’t know, maybe I lack foresight and am too trusting of our countries flagship Airline. I will say though, of course I want Virgin Australia competing again, but it depends at what cost. Love this style video mate! Maybe an idea for a few more?
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
@@LukeCrisp haha all opinions are valid Luke! Unfortunately we live in a world where nearly all, if not all firms are profit-motive. Maybe the Qantas boss will not raise the price to keep us happy, but if he does that, shareholders will kick him out! Interestingly, a lack of innovation on behalf of Qantas I mentioned in someone's comment. If Virgin go bust, Qantas won't need to keep improving as much as they are, they can go back to recliner seats on Perth to east coast A330 flights. They won't need to be innovative again etc. Qantas got back to top 10 on Skytrax and won several awards, not because they want to make Aussies proud but they needed to compete with Virgin. Hk government thought this through and bailed out both Cathay and 100% foreign owned HK Airlines. Passengers aren't the only victims in a monopoly, but also the economy itself. Simply think it as a Monopoly game, the reason why we stop when a player wins is because the next casualty is the bank!!!

Hi Jayden. I agree that Australia needs a second major airline for all the reasons you mention but I disagree that that needs to be Virgin Australia (at least in its current form). Virgin Australia was in a lot of trouble well before the pandemic, it was heavily indebted with not a lot of capital and was losing increasing amounts of money each year - something was fundamentally wrong. The current pandemic has essentially accelerated these issues and brought them to a head. Hopefully voluntary administration can lead to Virgin Australia Mk II - a different, leaner, more competitive airline, less saddled with debt etc. It may have a new name or even be a completely new company - the main thing, as you say, is that we have strong competition in Australia in the form of a 2nd major airline. Virgin Australia's international operations suffered some of the biggest losses, so a lot of articles are suggesting its future may be domestically focused, which sadly, does seem to make sense. I agree that Virgin Australia has great crews / staff, so I hope that the administrator finds a way that provides them good jobs in the industry (even if their employer ends up changing). I thought this article was worth a read: www.unisa.edu.au/Media-Centre/Releases/2020/virgin-collapse-may-signal-start-of-new-era-for-the-aviation-industry--and-its-not-all-doom-and-gloom/

Ahhh I miss having Kate as my lecturer! She's very nice and explains everything well. Yeah if Virgin Australia can stay afloat they'll have to change drastically (which the new CEO is trying). I agree we can have a different Virgin Australia but I don't think we can have a completely new airline. Qantas could potentially expand and make it hard for a new airline to be established in Australia. Qantas could've done this when Ansett collapsed to avoid a new airline coming i.e. Virgin, but they probably didn't see that coming. Now they've learnt their lesson and they will try their best to monopolise and control the Australian travel market as long as they can. Well thought out discussion, Jayden. I didn’t realize that Virgin Australia was such an international conglomerate. It’s such a challenge keeping airlines afloat in this difficult time, but is important as you point out. Competition has significantly decreased here in the US in the last 20 years which has driven up prices, seen the appearance of more and more fees, and decreases in service. Fortunately, we do still have a handful of airlines here to maintain some level of competition. Australia going down to 1 full service airline would pose lots of challenges to air travel. Hopefully, Virgin Australia can emerge from this stronger in the end.

Good work Jayden! It`s just a pity that Virgin had been run into the ground financially for so many years, leaving it in such a vulnerable state at this time. Under the new CEO things were beginning to turn around, but it was too late. It`s now all out of our hands, and we can only hope for an outcome that allows Virgin to fly again in some form. I think it may have to be a scaled-back operation, as there will be little appetite initially for international travel. There will certainly be enough demand to support two carriers on the domestic market though.
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
Today Etihad is partnering up Oaktree Capital Management to save Virgin and I hope everything will turn out well! I guess keeping domestic operations is more important for two reasons, (1) they're not very competitive on internationally anyway, although they did bring prices down a lot (2) if they continue to fly within Australia and bring prices down if may make VA haters become lovers (I was one of them🤫)

While I do like virgin remember that a lot of other industries are screaming out for bailouts too that will have to be paid back by future generations. Virgin is majority foreign owned so Australian taxpayers would in effect be underpinning their losses. The airline was underperforming before these recent events that were the catalyst for its current situation. If it survives probably a large equity injection will be needed. Are the parent entities willing or able to procure such from debt or raisings considering that it already has a heavy debt burden? Competition is of course desirable but Virgin being bailed out is not necessarily the only option. It might arise that another company might take on the assets of bankrupt Virgin to form a new airline (minus the debt). The gov. Might take an equity stake. A number of scenarios are possible. Hope it survives but whatever happens it's going to be a very rough road for it.
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you Mr Ed, I think a government bail out should be a last option. Obviously their shareholders can't fund Virgin right now because they're struggling themselves. So hopefully Virgin will see new investors coming in

not too long, about two hours :) Quite different I'd say. HK government is currently offering subsidies for both airlines. Also the competition between Cathay and HK Airlines isn't as intense as Virgin and Qantas IMO. Cathay faces more competition from Singapore Airlines, the Middle Eastern airlines and Chinese airlines.

Hey this video is awesome! Also, has so much to do with the aviation management course u’re studying now right?
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
supposedly yes, but all this happened during the semester break so the chance we'll discuss about VA is slim. Also the nature of the courses I undertake right now (economics, aviation marketing, aviation law, human factors) won't really talk about individual airlines success and failure but rather how they advertise, how good or bad their company culture is etc. 😬 thanks a lot for watching mate!
@DGflyssolo874 жыл бұрын
Honestly this was an interesting take on it. I worked as airline airport customer serivce for 5 years and now I'm a travel agent and clearly in the Aussie market is different to what we have on this side. It's true you do need the competition to keep everything you said going fares, jobs, connecticity and connections but the problem right now for all the airlines is even if they get the financial backing they want will the demand for travel still be there. The Internation Air Transport Association has already put out a grim forcast for fhe 2nd hald of 2020 and 2021. Imagine owing all this money but even fewer customers to get revenue. Then the politics of the different regions play a role in every airlines game. Like the fact how recently Lufthansa has agreed to grant minority shares to the German government as part of the bailout. Where fully privatised airlines will have to sell shares back into their respective governments. Another problem is going to be legisation and airline structure. One thing I'm glad you did correctly was compare domestic fares initially which is the correct way to do it. You don't compare the 2 because thats like comparing fresh water and sea water. Either way great video and let's hope for the best
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much for watching and sharing your thoughts on this one. It's interesting how you mentioned about the IATA forecast and whether future travel demand will be there. American Airlines is retiring their older fleet in bulk which they wouldn't have done otherwise. I guess they must have thought this through. Thanks again for your input, it was interesting to read your comment and yep let's hope for the best :)

thank you for the price information you have told us about. it is a shame if we lose Virgin, as we DEFINATELY need competition with airlines to keep prices down. but saying that.. id be happy to pay that little bit more to have a cuppa and snack, or a meal on a flight so that the flight feels just that 'little bit more special'

Fantastic review of the Australian aviation competition thus far. I do hope Virgin survives and keep their competitors especially Qantas on their toes. It was dismal to hear however that the majority of shareholders are 2 large Chinese businesses, SIA and to a small proportion, Richard Branson. As an Aussie I do wish our regulations and laws on foreign ownership should limit this in all industries. While as an Aussie supporting a company that supposedly is Strayan, it isn’t though is it? So hopefully there are at least 7 entities vying to have Virgin and I hope that at least 75% of shareholders are Strayans and profits ...or losses...stay within our national pride 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
I agree as a national interest, regulations and laws on foreign ownership should have a limit. It'd be amazing if those 7 entities are Australian (and Australian-owned). We have such laws in Hk that didn't allow Jetstar HK to takeoff. But it's not easy to change this regulation in Australia, they are many firms in Australia with foreign ownerships. I see foreign ownerships a good thing actually, not just in Australia of course, because it works the other way round. A report in AusTrade says: Though foreign-owned firms accounted for approximately 0.5% of the total estimated number of businesses in Australia, they employed almost one million workers (accounting for 8.7% of total business employment in Australia), and contributed over $220 billion to the Australian economy. I see still Virgin Australia Australian because it is an Australian-registered company, even though it's mostly foreign owned. It's like Cathay Pacific, I don't see it as a British, Qatari or Chinese company. Thanks very much for your thoughts David :)

Here in Malaysia, we have 3 types of airlines that cater to individual budget. They are MAB (formerly known as MAS) as the main full service carrier, Malindo Air as the hybrid carrier (similar business model as Virgin Australia) that serves domestic and regional destinations including Australia, and AirAsia as the low cost carrier. Very sad that I could not try Virgin Australia when I visit Australia domestically 😢
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
Hopefully they'd still be here when you come visit Australia💪🏻

My default preference is currently Qantas for a number of reasons, but keeping Virgin is very important. I, too, think Virgin will survive (though I don’t think Tiger will survive). They were starting to head in the right direction before heading into administration. Also, I must get different staff to you, the last few times I’ve flown VA the staff have been, at best, indifferent.

Ha. Not much point in making videos for Jetstar or Tiger, as Jetstar is fully owned by Qantas and Tiger by Virgin. ;)

One World Flyer Not really as they are different business models with different types of customers. Some people don’t want a full service airline - just the lowest fare. If Qantas abandoned Jetstar then a new low cost operator would set up for sure, so Qantas won’t leave that gap in the market.

Good one. I have the same feeling if HX collapses too. Cathay Pacific would increase the price and don't focus too much on service.
@JaydenWong4 жыл бұрын
I personally don't think Cathay will be able to increase the price as much as Qantas could. The market share that Cathay already has now is already huge compared to Qantas. Besides CX's major competitors are probably other foreign airlines (SQ, EK, CZ) more than HX even though it's based in HK! thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts Thomas!
@thomaswang22674 жыл бұрын
One World Flyer I would think HX is rather a major competitor When passengers fly from/to HK or regional destinations haha(direct completion). You are right on SQ,EK,CZ are major competitors When it comes to long haul transfer(Europe to Asia Pacific ). Just my thoughts haha

An amazing video again One World Flyer! All the reasons you stated in the video are absolutely correct! In my opinion, the Australian government should give Virgin Australia a loan but on condition that the loan can only be used by Virgin Australia and not its foreign owned companies and Virgin Australia has to come up with a plan to return to profitability within 2-3 years once the pandemic is over if not the Australian government will be able to seize all of Virgin Australia's assets. Really hope Virgin Australia survives! I love their livery and service and they are an amazing alternative to Qantas!

I remember how high fares were in the Ansett/Qantas duopoly days, and what a difference Virgin Blue had started to make before Ansett closed down. (Many people felt that Ansett service was better than Qantas). I agree that we need competition in the aviation market, but I'm not convinced that Australian governments should be investing to save this private company. Hopefully adminsitration will allow VA to restructure expenses, attract further private investment, and most likely ditch its medium and long haul routes (sorry OWF, butthey were also an expensive fail for Ansett, even before the 767 pylon cracking killed their domestic share).

Jayden, at 06:45 u are saying it is 666 people working in travel-related industry but your written content is mentioning 666k witch makes surely more sense. Also FYI, Finnair (before the Crisis) is also deploying a pure HK cabin crew on their routing between HKG and HEL.

Absolutely nobody knows what will happened once the corona crisis is over and therefore I prefer the wording „before the crisis“ when it is proved, AY used HK based cabin crews on their way to Finland 🇫🇮
