Some Warmoth parts have very subtle differences when compared to Fender. This video explains why.

"I know the replacement mug I came up with looks like the original, but I'm serious when I tell you that I wanted it to look like the original because it's meant to be a "replacement" mug. But it's not like I went to the original mug specs and just copied them...I wanted to create the fastest drinking, bestest tasting mug I could, so I designed this mug from the table up." It's what he said, check the transcript! I hope to get a Warmoth mug someday, my original is just not what it used to be.

You mentioned longevity and stability of your necks. I bought a Warmoth Strat neck in 1991 for $135. It was hanging up in my music store and I needed to replace a neck on a strat copy that I'd broken. It has bird's-eye maple neck with an ebony fretboard. The only time this truss rod has ever been adjusted was when it was put on that first body and then in '98 I put it on a Charvel model one body. In '99 I switched from 9 gauge to 10 gauge strings and that neck never moved. It plays as perfectly with tens as it did with nines. I can even change tunings during a practice session from E standard down to D standard or drop C and everything plays just fine. there's no change. This is the greatest Strat neck ever made.

Do you think you'll start doing more youtube specific content more frequently for Warmoth when this is all over? My Warmoth necks are unbelievable. The first one is about 22 years old and the truss rod might have been adjusted 3 times so far. The frets are stainless steel and I only had them filed once just a few months a ago. The intonation is perfect and I’m the guy that can hear any tuning issue, and that’s on both Warmoth necks. The double truss rods offer a stability to the neck that’s so nice I can’t imagine using anything else. The notes played are very clear. Huge difference to all but one of the Fender necks I’ve had. Most of the Fender necks have intonation issues, most have blurry note definition, they have a soft feel and I constantly adjust the truss rod. In some of my Fender necks I’ve had, I’m not even sure if the truss rod adjustment works. I only had one Fender neck I liked and it was a double truss rod neck. But Fender is stepping it up now. Still not on the Warmoth level.

Last year I bought the least expensive maple 🍁 neck for my strat from Warmoth just to try one out. I bolted it on, installed hipshot tuners so I didn’t even need to drill pilot holes and I have never leveled the frets and it’s my daily player. Low action and great sound.

Arron, I’m old enough to remember buying a 1965 fender strat off the wall at the local guitar 🎸 shop for $150 , and thinking 🤔 it was a lot of money 💴, so I can tell you I’ve have had a lot of Fenders , Suhr, PRS, Gibson etc , and my favorite guitars that I always play are my Warmouths , because of the neck for me they are perfect 👌, keep it up I used to play Black Sabbath, now it’s the blues 😎

So that makes me curious, is it the Warmoth neck profiles you prefer or the perfect geometry of the neck? I've heard that's a really nice Suhr guitar or a Friedman is super high-level as far as playability.

michael drevyanko sr - yes sir, the guitar has to fit the player, I like the Warmoth "boat neck" profile, this is just one of my favourite guitars ever just because of the shape of the neck. This shape and the "round back" shape are one full inch thickness all the way up the neck. No problem for me! I might just order a 1-3/4" width neck for my nice old Strat because the neck is a bit small for me.

When you talk about certain pieces I have found it little challenging to get those off menu items you speak of. Example, I would like the bridge pick guard you made a few years ago for the Prince edition tele you made. I already placed a order for the 7/8 pick guard but how do get the bridge plate. Sorry to ask direct question here but sadly the replies are limited obviously as everyone is at home. Thanks Ken

More space under the strings where your picking hand is with the top mount. That can affect your playing if you like to rest your pinky on the guitar sometimes. Go look in a guitar shop and see what I mean. Edit: in my practical experience, a top mount Floyd makes me play with my little finger hooked around the high E string a bit, such as when playing a tight rhythm pattern. I just remembered that. I have an Eighties Kramer Focus.
@michaelcarey9359
@michaelcarey9359 4 жыл бұрын
One serious pro would be that there doesn't need to be that angled pocket. Another would be that the strings go over the nut at a different angle that in certain installations creates the tuning problem where there the nut is applying tension to the string, rather than locking it flat against the nut. If your FR is installed and set up "right", the tuning NEVER changes between tuning the strings and locking the strings.

The single biggest difference, imo, is custom configurability ... nut width, fretboard radius, neck carve profile, wood choices, fret size and material choices, etc ... for example, I love my Fender EJ sig strat, but wanted massively tall stainless frets - no dice from Fender ... now, if Warmoth ever offered that EJ neck carve, I'd be set !

Yes I am the same way. I love Strats I also love ebony fret boards but until recently they didn't exist in the Fender catalog. I dislike Les Pauls and dislike necks with bindings so they were out of my consideration. But with Warmoth I can get an Ebony fret board on a Strat neck. I also hate the standard C shaped neck and found the boatneck a perfect fit. I am lucky because I didn't like the color of the roasted maple necks but after hearing how good they felt bought a roasted maple with ebony fret board and ss6115 frets and I couldn't be happier. I can't go back to a finished neck. Once the quarantine is over I'm ordering a roasted maple/roasted maple neck with ss6115 frets and it will feel so good I'll be even happier.

Fender licenced warmoth necks man... Got three of them myself. ALL 3 kick major ass... I own like 8 strats. I'm a partscaster guy. Nothing makes me happier than a unique looking strat that's sort of got its own look that doesn't really exist anywhere else in the world. Keep in mind I have NEVER experienced warmoth guitar bodies so I can't comment on warmoths quality when it comes to body making. I'm sure they do a great job though. Saw what they offer and holy crap there are tons of options for customization. 1st neck is dark rich indian rose wood with quarter sawn maple. Locking shiny tuners. Put a few string trees on myself. I know some folks don't like string trees but I do. They also make putting the guitar on a stand a lil bit easier. Less likely hood of the strings getting snagged around the head stock against the guitar strand holding thingies... Got it on ebay for 350. Stainless steel frets yo! The back was lightly sanded to give it great sliding ability and a raw feel. It plays great. Prolly the best neck for the price I have ever got. 2nd neck is a dark rich indian rosewood slab of my choice with a roasted maple back. Roasted maple is great. I think it brings a slightly better tone than most necks and it's also a tad bit lighter in weight. Also it just looks kool. Like toasted bread lol. It plays amazingly as well and has glow in the dark fret markers. Holy crap it's kool. Had warmoth make it for me. Took about 2-3 months to arive. Cost about 500. They charged about 70 bucks extra to paint the head stock in that kick ass holoflake color. 3rd neck is a all maple neck from high end birds eye maple. Got BRASS frets on their. I was going for a all gold looking strat look and it was perfect. They have their own sound kind of but also... Brass frets are really strong actually. I would argue their strength is easily between nickel and stainless steel. They are also fairly thick... Not the thickest grade fret of course but definitely not the smallest. I wanted to experiment and it worked out great. Also this neck is my only 10-16 compound radius neck. I wanted to try it out and well... It's amazing. Had warmoth also custom make it for me. Cost about 500 as well... Sometimes you need to do a lil self drilling in the head stock to make screws fit a lil better for whatever kind of tuning heads you need but that's to be expected. One thing I LOVE about these necks, aside from them just being amazing... But if you ever put necks on fenders... You might have run into problems before. I know I have. 3 times now I have put a fender neck on a fender body and guess what? Once you put the strings on you sometimes notice that the high e string or low e string is almost slipping off the fret board. CRAP that is annoying. I have had that happen to me about 3 times if I recall. Made me SO mad. I was able to fix it but man it's a pain... What the hell fender? Do a better job at lining things up!!!! Which is the biggest reason why I love warmoth necks. All 3 of my warmoth necks when onto the bodies NO PROBLEM and ended up with VERY straight string alignment with very little need to adjust the action. I'll say it right now... Warmoth necks > Fender necks. I'm sure both companies have a hiccup every now and then... And there are really bad ass fender necks out there if you're lucky. But a safer and cheaper bet is clearly warmoth. And if you're into customization... Look no further than warmoth. For close to 400-600 they will custom craft you the koolest neck ever. Waiting on a blood wood neck right now actually! And for anyone concerned with price comparisons... Just keep in mind... Fender neck prices summed up... Low end squire type necks. You can find em for around 100-200. They suck lol... But can be modified with a few tools to feel better. This neck wont last decades like higher end guitars most likely but it's beginner crap... Performer necks, special necks etc are next up. You can get em for around 300-500. Not bad. Pro necks, american standard necks etc etc is next up. Around 400-600. Then stuff like custom shop or rare limited edition crap which is about 600 in the case of rare limited edition stuff. And around 900-1300 for custom shop necks. Many of these fender necks are clearly way more than warmoth necks. Sometimes triple the price! Many of them are used, have a few issues, and lack the level of custom detail that warmoths custom neck work can offer. Shiiit... Many expensive as fuck fender necks don't even have nicer parts than a warmoth neck. Come on Fender! When will you morons adopt stainless steel? Do you want warmoth to kick your ass? lol

My Warmoth neck has been on my strat style guitar for over 10+ years. Comparing to my Am. Strat Deluxe the only thing that my eye sees is the head stock a tad smaller than Frnder's, for me is a good thing. I hate the oversized look of the CBS era. For me the Warmoth headstock size seems perfect. I have 3 MIM Fender strats I'm contemplating replacing with a Warmoth boat shape neck. I put this neck on my partscaster & love the feel & my ear hears more of a "woody " sound from the guitar, definitely when unplugged but also a hint from the amp. What do you expect, I'm retired now & have a lot of time on my hands.

I would be curious to know if you guys pay attention to grain orientation of the wood before making a neck out of it. The fibers of the wood will be larger near the bottom of the tree and smaller at the top. In Japanese traditional woodworking, they orient the boards by the way these grains run. So that, when assembling a frame, snaller grain of one end of a board is joined to the smaller grain of the other board and the same matching with the larger grain ends. It creates a more stable joint that is less likely to separate due to shrinking and swelling. I think that may be true for a guitar neck or even more so for a bass neck. Larger grain at the heel and smaller grain at the headstock. Thus, a more stable neck. 🤔

I’ve had a few. I’ve bought them used and new. They are magnificent. I would have liked to hear a bit more about truss rods. The curly maple Jazz neck I have now was finished by a noteworthy luthier, a long time ago. It’s not as nice as a new Warmoth finish but it’s cool and has held up. It is heavy and thick. I don’t like the weight, but I like the feel a lot. I don’t like the prevalence of 21 fret Warmoths. (Extra fret.). It isn’t attractive nor functional for me. I’ve bought two and cut them both off and refinished the edges. An extra dot remains. I’m probably going to replace the black dot on mine with a maple dot so it isn’t so apparent. Their fret work is fine. I mean perfectly fine. But I like mine to have a bit more rounded smoothness to the edges, so I can drop it quickly but softly into the stand smoothly. Like sliding down a pole instead of a jagged wire fence, but a smoother fret edge profile also aids comfortable play. I would not give an edge to USA Fender here. They both do a good job. It might make a nice interesting option to have more rounded fret edges. I like that they offer stainless. I haven’t done much fret work, but I do know that stainless is much much harder to work with. But you will never have to replace them and bends are like butter. No sound difference. Come on, man. I like the wood choices. The online selection is difficult and calling isn’t as helpful as I’d like, but again, I’ve never been disappointed in the product. A-mazing. The wood choices are great! A bit more of an option on online headstock matching would be cool. Like 3/16” ebony for a black out bass. Hint. Hint. I’m not sure why they don’t offer a bone nut. I would go with that every time. The nut work the do is very good too. String it up and play. I do a bit more work on mine though to perfect it. One of these days I’m going to grab an ebony Jazz neck with MOP blocks. Except it’s just plastic which is how it’s done. Honestly I’d like to have abalone blocks. I might have to do it myself. Doing that by hand would be very difficult, but it might be doable. Anyway, I agree that, with the side truss adjustment feature or with the super wide option the warmoth is the best replacement neck available.

Hey Aaron -- been really enjoying the series and I just ordered a custom Warmoth body and neck for my first partscaster build. I know it'll be late summer at best before I see it, but it's something to look forward to. Here's a question maybe you could touch on. I've been blessed with a couple really light guitars and I know if I end up with a heavy one it just won't get it's fair share of playing time. I know their total weight but I really don't have a frame of reference for how light one of their stripped bodies is. A little internet research suggests the typical neck is a pound or maybe a hair more, and tuners can be up to 8oz if locking, and so on. So maybe a show talking about component weight and estimated end weight? If you know the original body weight of the guitars at your bunker you could share details on the original body weight and total completed guitar weight. Thanks!

Vintage/Modern one piece necks are about a pound, modern 2 piece necks are heavier maybe another 1/4 pound for the second truss rod. You can see the weights of the bodies on the pre made shop. I would say most Ash, Alder Strat bodies even chambered are about 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 pounds and mahogany is 4 1/2 pounds and higher. I don't think the finish adds any real weight. Soloist bodies are probably 1/4 - 1/2 pound lighter. Most of my fender guitars are about 7 1/2 pounds with a standard fender trem system. I suspect a Les Paul is probably starts at over 8 pounds.

Weight is a big concern for me, too, or for my aging shoulder anyway. I’ve never ordered a custom body because there’s no option for light weight. They vary a lot in the showcase. If I were to call in an order, can I ask for as light a weight as possible? I know that’s imprecise and there’d be no guarantee, but is it actionable info that you guys could use in wood selection? Keep up the awesome vids, Aaron, I look forward to these every weekday and you never disappoint!

"better" - Indeed. I've purchased at least 5 Warmoth Fender style necks and all of them came out of the box ready to screw on and play The nut being cut perfect out of the box is the most impressive to me. Also interesting (to me) is right around the 2 year mark the necks develop a sweet resonance you can feel in your fretting hand.

new to this Warmoth thing....there's a local ad for a 5 string Warmoth body/neck Fender Jazz, surf green / pearloid neck inlays / neck binding / pearloid pick guard / gotoh tuners / fender N3 noiseless pick ups / 900.00 - this thing looks incredible / the seller states that he built it for a customer but due to typical 2020 financial issues, he backed out, so he's selling it for exactly what he's got in it. hmmmm good deal??

Aaron, if I buy a neck from warmonth, how much fret work finishing should I expect to have to do?
@warmoth
@warmoth 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on so many factors...the climate where you live, the way you intend to use the neck, how you like your action set, etc. The vast majority of necks are playable out of the box. I've honestly never done anything to any of my personal Warmoth guitars. That said, a pro fret job will always make them better.

Necks come with frets already installed, assuming you spec it that way when you order. Nuts can come pre-installed too, but not brass nuts. That, and tuners, you would have to do yourself.

Our vintage Strat replacement body has shallower vintage-style pickup routs. They are 5/8" deep. The only way to know if your pickups will fit is to measure their depth. Watch this for more info: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYnQZaJ-gLJpbNU

bro are you from the puyallup area..you look so familiar bro and we got to be about the same age..i grew up in the puyallup area and lived on south hill for years ..matter fact back in the 80's i used to live 2 houses away from the shop and used to bug the guys over there all the time to take me on as an apprentice..never happened..but i have used warmoth products for years and have 3 customs in my arsenal..my favorite being a koa strat that i got in 1992.have always loved your compound radiused necks as opposed to standard fender necks and who dont love the truss adjust on the side.but brother seriously you look so familiar..i used to run around with ronnie walvatne and jeff orrice (R.I.P ) if those names ring a bell..anyway be well bro way to enlighten folks on your necks.

Also if you look at 1950s Stratocasters the back of the headstock where it meets the neck is clearly hand shaped and sanded, as is the whole neck. Early PRS guitars too. .Pretty much all modern necks look CNC made, don't you agree?
@warmoth
@warmoth 4 жыл бұрын
CNC tech has absolutely made things more consistent, which I would argue is a good thing. Keep in mind a CNC machine doesn't just spit out finished necks. They only do the rough cutting. Every neck and body still gets a TON of hand-sanding.

Warmoths are fabulous,still like the old days,go to a store,a few times,and out of maybe a dozen strats,theres one that you can,t leave the store without,it will haunt you too,like guys with old Chevys,that had Dupont colors,the same prices for a 57,but our likes seem more attainable,but too much CNC,and cookie cutter product,might taint that later on

Interesting to hear him relate the history from the POV of his company. I don't know him, but he looks about the same age as me, or slightly younger, meaning that neither of us were working for our respective companies in the 80's, and didn't observe these things first hand. We each have had the history related to us by the company founders. I do know that Wayne Charvel, Lynn Elsworth and Jim & Ken Warmoth all knew each other and were working on many of the same things at that time, and I think most likely it was a case of parallel development. In any case, it's old news now, and I'm just glad it exists in the world!
