The individuals they took over were transformed. They became sexless, reproduced by seeds (very rarely) and no longer aged. The molluscoids were truly no more once taken. I would like to note that it would be mathematically difficult to have the exact population of two species match before the switch. It would be much easier to just taken over 80% or 90% and just explain to the new minority that some changes have been made.
