That philosophy involving argument/debate is fascinating. Its something I'll try and adopt as well where applicable.

Neal Gaiman figured out how to add horror while putting the player in the role of the monster. Nothing quite like waking up the night after the full moon and vomiting up fingers.

The interesting thing is that Shadow Out of Time establishes that the Yithians mind-swapped into the ancient prehistoric mollusks on Earth billions of years ago in the timeline, and built cities etc. Then once the time was up there, they swapped with the Copeopterans, a sentient species of big beetles far in Earth's future, long after homo sapiens had gone extinct. What I want to point out is that they skipped past humans! What's wrong with us, huh?! >:(

According to a story by Clark Ashton Smith, the Serpent Men were not atheistic. The two human characters of the story summon a demon from another world, that of the Serpent Men. One with whom their own terrestrial demons have no power over or even an ability to perceive.

Late to this party, but I think you shouldn't be too hard on yourself regarding the map design criticism out there. Unpopular opinion, but most of those that seem to do that are from my perspective either a bit elitist or completely anachronistic in perspective. As you put it yourself, there were no blueprints, you guys had to experiment yourself to come up with how to make these maps to begin with. Your levels might not have been aesthetically perfect and a bit abstract. Sure Downtown doesn't exactly look like a downtown, but they had personality, they were challenging and they were fun. And the most important thing with any game is that it needs to be fun (which so many modern games seems to forget as they only focus on the "pretty" parts). I mean, heck, take Romeros Sigil wads. The community is still to this day sheepishly obeying his "golden rules", making so many doom projects look sadly uniform, while Romero himself seemed intent on breaking every single one of those rules in Sigil. Those levels are raw, weird, but they are damn fun to play and seem to share more with your design philosophy back then than his own old rules. So don't be too hard on yourself regarding such nonsense. All in all you did great and are a legend in especially the rpg world, still inspiring old timers as my self as well as new and aspiring players.

I mean, at least they're honest about it. They trade back and forth with other races, give them knowledge, etc. . . Of all of Lovecraft's eldritch beings, I'd say these are the least evil and most downright friendly!
