You know what's funny is that my parents tried the opposite with me, I'm actually an Hong Konger that learned English before I learned Cantonese and could barely speak Cantonese even though I lived there for 13 years(if you are wondering, I eventually moved to the U.S. for high school and college. And yes, I actually have an easier time living in the U.S. not necessarily because of not knowing words(I can definitely understand everything they say), but because I'm embarrassed that I lived in Hong Kong longer than in the U.S. and I'm afraid of saying the wrong things). Trust me, when a Hong Konger says I'm a foreigner, I never tried to correct them because it was an excuse for my broken Cantonese.

Don’t be embarrassed to ride alone.. that always bothered me when I heard my friends say “oh I could never go to the movie theatre alone”... but why ? I enjoy being by myself, I love myself and honestly enjoy life enough to want to experience everything, especially on my own. There’s this peaceful but enlightening feeling being able to be one with yourself and your thoughts. I enjoy being in my own head, getting my thoughts and creativity out.

My daughter in law is Japanese. She is teaching me and husband how to speak in Japanese. Our son is learning also. Its not easy but we need to communicate with our grandson in English and Japanese. 😃

For those wanting to go to Japan to teach English, being a native doesn't make you a teacher. It's not the lazy way into a foreign country. If you are serious about teaching English at least get some books on how to teach EFL and particularly on the differences between the language your pupils will speak and the one you will be teaching cause that changes the approach.

I think that's one of the reasons it's so hard to learn a foreign language here in American, many of the teachers speak too much English during class, so we're not really using the language we're suppose to be learning.

I am half Japanese and I don’t know any Japanese. My mother refused to teach us. She said you live in America speak American. She is 93 and in the end stages of her life. I regret not knowing any, she is starting to speak a lot of Japanese and I cannot communicate with her. This happened to her sister. She had strokes and couldn’t remember her Japanese. So we had to fly my mom here to help with her.

@@ihaveavocados Only if you know two languages. Once you learn the third, that rarely happens. In India, Hindi or Tamil speakers often have that issue since they only speak native and English. In other states where people learn 3 or more languages, they do not have that issue. But at that stage, you often do something called code switching. Which is deliberately using a word from another language to put emphasis.

I know i'm late but I have to say.. so one main take away I got from this 2 parter was how strong and unapologetic Katie was. Not once was she ashamed of who she was during this video and based off her stories, she wasn't growing up either. She didn't play anything up for the camera either, was just herself to the core.. Very powerful stuff. I admire people like her. Especially with how divided things are in America right now and people are scared to speak up for what they actually feel or think incase it will alienate them. . Dope stuff!

It makes me sad that people think doing things alone is lame. I absolutely love doing things on my own, having tea at a cute shop, dinner at my favorite spot, reading at the park, pretty walks, hell even a movie! I don't have to accommodate to anyone, I can observe the world around me peacefully and can often journal and process things on my own during certain outings. I think it helps me enjoy and engage more consciously with my friends when I do go out with them!

Good video (not too long) and great guests -Katie and the rickshaw guy. Katie is knowledgeable, but a little bit shy since being on KZbin is probably new to her. But I hope she start on her own channel. And the rickshaw guy is very charming -but I guess you have to for the job.

I definitely wouldn't mind longer videos, I greatly appreciate the ability to live vicariously through your interactions with everyone. Solo rickshaw rides aren't quite as sad as my statement but I'm alright with that for now. My circumstances dictate I make certain my son is well off, responsible, and taking care of himself without any major issues. He's 4, I've got a long time so vicariously I shall live 😂🤗

I'm probably a quintessential IT person. Long time ago I worked at a very traditional/successful Japanese IT company: NTT Data. I even lived in a company dormitory (6 tatami mat room) In the US - I had several IT related jobs - e.g. worked at Microsoft - got an MBA - and did some intense things. Now I work at a fortune 100 company doing Azure transformations in b2b stock/bond/derivative trading platform. Get sanity working as a part-time yoga teacher :-) Yes - salary is a big difference between Japan/US (but in Japan a company can pay living expenses - but it still does not compare). You are correct - given Japan's demand for IT resources - foreigners must come on. I'd say Indians can fill the gap. But as you know, there is cultural stigma. One thing I hope Japan can open itself for - is the creation of a culture where innovative companies can flourish. However, in this regard: USA > China > Japan. Perhaps after WW2 Japan threw away all cultural barriers in the trash, put their noses to the grindstone, and became the second largest economy in the world. What happened? This is a good question - and I have my theories. Japan's economy is still quite large (3rd) - but MITI should consider turning some knobs to unleash the potential that is within the Japanese heart. We witnessed this after WW2. But I think they are too comfortable to do this today.

Well, as far as I know, they got the economic bomb from USA cus they were overtaking too much. Something like what's going on between China and USA now but not as bluntly. Next up is Korea and they will flurish together instead of having conflict of interests 'cause geologically and economically both countries have a lot to give and take and benefit each other and grow together.

Once a country's export market closes their doors to their products due to economic problems in the buyer's market or due to market saturation, the manufacturing country naturally opens up. Doesn't have to be political. It happened with China, Israel, UAE & India, it'll happen eventually in Japan too.

That's kinda cool. I'm half japanese and half Filipino. My dad taught me japanese when I was small around 3-7 years old. Then eventually study by myself since I wasn't enrolled in a language school while I live in the Philippines. Now I've been living in Japan for 7 years, I didn't had any culture shock, I do miss talking in Filipino and English.

Can't wait to be fluent in Japanese!! Started studying a few weeks ago and I'm really enjoying the challenge. I speak English and Tagalog fluently. I just can't for that moment when I go to Japan and being able to read everything around me. 😁😁😁.. maybe after a few years, I will start learning korean too!:)
