Happened with enel as well, in the anime they pronounce it eneru, Japanese syllables always end in a vowel (except n) so in order to write the name enel in Japanese you have to add a vowel at the end. Also there is no r or l sound in Japanese, it’s a weird combination or both sounds as well as d. So Enel became Eneru

Someone probably already said this but it's not that L's and R's sound similar in Japanese. it's just that Japanese doesn't have any characters that make an L sound so they use the R sound instead when writing 'foreign' names, so translations basically just have to use context clues to know which is more accurate

I think it’s because Zoro is quite obviously based off of Zorro, the swordsman who would cut three slashes to form a Z as his signature move which is represented by Zoros three swords, 4kids was cautious of a copyright claim which was understandable, it’s just that I don’t think one was ever made so… 😂
@dismaldimwit22009 ай бұрын
I always assumed his name was changed to zolo in English to avoid copyright issues with the Zorro movies.
@necronexus58011 ай бұрын
I remember hearing they had issues calling him Zoro because of Zorro. Apparently the company that owns the rights to Zorro is really strict with the name's usage since they own the copyrights. It is sort of like how you cannot use Eternia because of He-Man in North America, or the word Edge because of copyright. By the way. The one about edge is really messed up and there are videos about it, as well as how you cannot use Eternia in North America.

Another reason: in Japanese, the r and l sounds are the same, sounding like a mix of both. The sounds in English can be one or the other. That’s why it can technically be “zolo” and “zoro” - they are the same thing.

The intresting thing is that Zoro in one piece is almost definitely named after Zorro one the legendary swordsmen of western literary canon. An Mihawk looks a lot like some incarnations of Zorro. Zorro is a dashing Spanish nobleman who is also a vigilante at night. And while the storys dont necessarily match the archetype of the arrogant noble spaniard swordsman he depicts is Zorro.

@mmaniacs11 ай бұрын
The mistake actually happens often in translations of manga because, in Japanese they don't technically have the exact equivalent of the sound "L" they substitute it with their "R" in theirs. So it's never fully known if the writers meant r or l and the translates assume. Examples: Artoria from FGO is translated as Altria. Spy x Family Forger, is Folger. Laws ability in dressrossa is Chambres, not Shambles.
@SakuraiHikari1511 ай бұрын
Though in the case of Artoria, the actual Japanese company actually does use Artoria for her name (written in Roman letters even) in official stuff. There are only 2 things that use Altria; 1) The infamous Chinese bootleg figure (nicknamed as Sader) labels it as Altria to avoid copyright law and 2) Aniplex of America for reasons that have never been actually given (outside of a lie they tried to tell and got busted on immediately). Also in Japanese we don't technically have L's or R's, our version of them is to basically say both L and R at the same time, which is why the confusion is evenly argued for both sides. Other sounds like that in our language are Th and Z and B and V.

Though R and L a pronounced and writen the same, let's also keep in mind some characters/places are named after English or other European words. So, Levely, Raftel...etc. are phonetically correct, but don't really make sense. For Zoro/Zolo, I guess that doesn't really matter, unless he was named after Zorro the Masked Hero
@midorinounko11 ай бұрын
There’s no L in Japanese, so when you’re reading an English word like (for example) Luffy, his name is ruffi,、ルッフィー…多分)、「ー」をありませんけど、知りません。So technically Luffy’s name is ruffī but we call it luffy. So same with Zoro but in reverse. Because of how pronouncing “ra” and the following ra ri re ro involve letting the tongue touch the top of your mouth, it sounds like “La” and so on. You can search “how to pronounce r’s in Japanese” if you’re interested. 皆、聞いてくれてありがとござました^_^

Its not that R and L in japanese is similar, its that japanese technically has neither of them, it has a sound betwee the two, usually closer to R. But if we consider it an R like the gépben writing does then they have no L at all.
@ASlikesMACROPHAGE10 ай бұрын
The reason why this happens because Japanese people can not pronounce L, so they use the closest thing they can make of it, R. For ex: “Jet Gatling gun” is pronounced in Japanese as “Jetto Gatoringu” See how the L was replaced with R. And your pronounce it as “Jet-toe-gat-or-ring-uh”

In Japanese they don’t have separate letters/sounds for L/R. They also don’t ever end words with consonants, and if a word ends with a ‘u’ they usually don’t really pronounce it. So his name was spelled Eneru in Japanese, but could be pronounced as either Enel or Eneru

Oda borrowed the name as a homage from another excellent fighter, namely Zorro (the masked guy dressed in black that carves the Z with his Rapier). So "Zoro" is the only correct pronounciation despite the problems with L and R in japanese, since the author's stated intent was the homage.
