WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

No. She's looking for flaws in logic and reason to reinforce her existing belief. It's intensely stressful to discard an existing belief let alone run with a new and contradicting one. Most people can't. The easy option is to justify the existing belief.

@Fred Brooks It is usually a waste of time to talk to someone who is a true believer. Their Morton's demon will prevent them from honestly listening. But there are people watching who might find the truth. Which is we don't know. And we do not have to know to know some answers are wrong. Why do you not want people to have logical fallacies exposed? Why does God need people to believe logical fallacies? And there are believers who think that Armageddon is a good thing and want the world to move in that direction.

For 15 years I worked for a phone company. We were trained to play on people's emotions and needs.. We had to ask questions to use their answers against them. And most shameful of all, we had to make them feel guilty if they didn't buy what we were selling. I guess religion is the big phone company in the sky.

Imagine if you said to someone "If you don't love me, I'm going to put you in a place where you will get endlessly tortured.... forever" I can't even begin to fathom what that does to a young mind.

Visiting my grandmother's church when I was about 8 or 10 and was taken down to the basement for bible study while I waited for her. The teacher told a tale about a little girl who put off accepting Jesus into her heart until a church picnic, when she decided to do so after a boat ride. Well, the boat driver fell over, got caught in the propellers, sharks came and ate him, panicking, everyone in the boat went to one side and then capsized the boat, they got eaten by sharks, and in the case of the little girl - went to hell after she died. From being eaten by sharks. So all us kids were all told to get down on our knees and ask Jesus into our heart. I'm 47 and I still viscerally remember that. It was emotionally abusive in so many ways... I've been an atheist since 14 and at the very least rejecting that morning in that dark basement with the horrible brutal manipulation and fear mongering was a step towards that.

It turns the young mind into a mental dumpster fire. I spent my early years constantly in fear of going to hell, paranoid of everything and all of my actions until I pretty much ended up as a social recluse until my mid-teen years. That's when I finally saw through the bullshit and began living life on my terms. My children will never know religion.

growlinghands……...You're denying God because of a human being that used a poor method. The Bible doesn't teach what she did, so why abandon God when he had no part in what happened? People often make this mistake. They don't understand that pastors, priests and the like are human beings. They make mistakes but no individual pastor is the entire Church. Each pastor develops a few methods as he goes along, fully believing he's doing no harm as long as he's getting the intended results. He's simply wrong, and that's it.. You should have checked the Bible, upon not finding this you should have concluded the teacher was wrong. We believe in the Bible, the cornerstone of our religion. If it's not in the Bible, don't blame the Bible nor God.

Cody Browning,...………….How did 14 years of the Christian part of your life serve you ultimately? You're talking about some things that troubled you in your youth, but whatever that was it's meaningless if the faith got you through with the correct foundation. If you turned out to be a decent person, and I don't know one way or another, but if you did then where does the credit belong? Going through difficulties hurts us somewhat but it's also our best teacher. Some children don't have spiritual guidance early in life, they may have suffered much worse then you as a result. We don't know each other's life problems, but you can trust that we all have difficult issues to face. What occurs to most of us as we become middle aged and ultimately a senior person? Then common denominator is that we all become more knowledgeable. Why does that happen if we're no longer going to school to learn? The bumps and bruises we suffer teach us more effectively that any classroom can. If something hurts, we quickly understand to avoid that. That defines wisdom, wisdom is essential for spiritual growth, that results in our place in heaven. You have to admit, we all knew a kid that was a trouble maker that was out of control at an early age. That kid will be confronted with hard choices because he's so out of balance, which makes the consequences unbalanced and more harsh. A poor actor needs more discipline, a bad child needs to learn the hard way, especially if he gets out of control. If your early years were uncomfortable for you but you became well behaved as a result, then you won't have to endure the repercussions that an out of control child will face during his life. Your good behavior doesn't require punishment to correct, thus not any serious consequences. Some will say that's a boring existence, to be disciplined and live balanced, but you will understand the benefits, particularly the final benefit in heaven.

It damages me as a kid. My parents were understanding, but I went to a private religious school, and I heard a lot of very toxic, terrifying things. Not just the obvious sexism, as a little girl, but I had a lot of very unhealthy fear surrounding belief and faith. Believing things just because I was told them was never natural for me. I figured out santa wasn’t real long before my parents dropped the whole act. It was unnatural to not ask questions and look for evidence and proof. I had none, and I can’t say I ever really believed on my own accord. I was very committed to going through the motions because I’d fear. THAT is manipulation! In my early teens, I admitted to myself that I was not a believer, and then through time, stopped pretending. My life became much better once I started being myself. Of course I had bouts with tragedy, trauma, and suffering, but being free to believe that there was no cosmic reason for it, and nothing about me that necessarily deserved the things that were not my fault, was much easier. I still have a lot of shame around my first traumatic event, which was not my fault, because of what I was taught at that time. I wasn’t even sold on those beliefs on morality, but it was so deeply indoctrinated in me that it was habit. I catch myself now as an adult slipping back into it.

Just imagine a parent who tells their child, 'I can't pick you up from school today and I'm sending someone to pick you up that you don't know. However, you shouldn't go with just anyone because there are really bad people who might try to get you to go with them and the bad people will hurt you. But it's ok, just use your childlike faith to determine who you should go with and you'll be fine.' That is why faith isn't good enough.

This call demonstrates lots of things, but for me, the basic, widespread lack of understanding of what a scientist does is the most worrying. We need to educate the public as to the purpose of science, and how it works. I think that so many people equate a scientist’s word with a religious leader, as in, they make stuff up and expect people to believe it, when just the opposite is true- science is a method of discounting and eliminating unreliable information.

Faith is only gullibility & credulity, dressed up as a virtue by religions. That is what it takes to believe that some cosmic Jewish zombie, who was his own father, can make you live forever if you telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master, so he can remove evil from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree. Joyce Myers is just carrying on in the tradition of famous Christian leaders like Eusebius of Caesaria, 4th century Bishop under Emperor Constantine, who said : "How it may be lawful and fitting to use falsehood as a medicine, and for the benefit of those who want to be deceived." And Martin Luther, the 16th century founder of Protestant Christianity, who said : "What harm would it do, if a man told a good strong lie for the sake of the good and for the Christian church ... a lie out of necessity, a useful lie, a helpful lie, such lies would not be against God, he would accept them."

People believe what they want to be true, if you want an afterlife to be true, you believe it is true and hope your belief will make it true. It's extremely difficult to admit you have been completely mistaken and you have foolishly wasted 20, 30, or more years of your life... most "believers" are in active denial, that's why they get hysterical whenever confronted with evidence disproving their believes... admitting they have been fooled takes a lot of courage and inner power...
@MrMarco855

OpticalFriends,...…..How about this; I won't get hysterical if you confront me with this evidence you're referring to. Explain what evidence you have that disproves my belief in God. Theists never admit to being fooled because we never believe that. On the other hand, most atheists began as believers, I haven't heard a single atheist admit the they were a fool. Furthermore, the years that a person believes in God, even if they change that belief, aren't wasted years as you claim. I think other things took place during those years that you're not mentioning. Atheist can't make a point unless they embellish it into something that's not true.. If you drink alcohol, you wasted all those years. If you smoke cigarettes, another waste of years. What about the things you've done to others that hurt them? More wasted years. I think you've wasted more years then you have to waste.

To defend the lean not on your understanding verse: It is true that we don't have entirely reliable means of learning correct information, or that we fall prey to false beliefs, because we are not equipped to detect truth very well. God is supposedly the thing to lean on, because he has knowledge, means to know, faculties to know, he knows everything. He is wise etc. Proverbs 3: 5-6 is ironic, because the text claims that the commands which the person wears on them will give them instructions to keep them healthy and prosperous. Here, these commands are supposed to bless you. If they bless you, these commands are from God. So.. a little twist, but... If we are not given any reason to think that the God claims have any positive consequences for us, and that we are not growing in wisdom from our personal beliefs in the gods we follow, then our beliefs are not legit according to this passage. This passage has a belief that following God's commands will actually make your life good, enhanced whatever, so you should follow them. Well, it would be reasonable that if our personal God beliefs or commands don't get us anywhere in our practical lives, our beliefs should be interrogated until we find claims that produce positive consequences. I admit, this is a utilitarian Argument for not believing in gods or following faculty commands, because the gods we believe in don't bring us what we should be getting, but it does show as well that theists themselves should be engaging with the text more rigorously to make sure they are not falling into prey traps to believe in things that could make them violate this verse. To lean not on your understanding, so follow God doesn't necessarily mean God should be followed ignorantly. It means that this God is making reliabillist Arguments that following him will make you well. If you have beliefs that are not doing this, then God is likely not talking to you, so you should be quick to question and not believe until God blesses you. If nothing comes of this God, then assume God has no issues with you for not believing until he shows himself to you. I am subverting Religious Arguments to demonstrate that God himself likely is ok with you being an atheist until you have evidence of him and his direct actions to help you.

Cristian- "but you not supposed relying on your own understanding, you have to be like child to believe in" I- why god would gave me a brain to be retional and hop that I accept bullshit without evidence? Cristian- but why not accept? If you can live forever instead of burn in hell forever in case you be wrong? I've been a hardcore atheist my whole life. Almost angry with people who believe in stupidity... Until now. I'm 47 and as I get older I'm thinking that if belief makes people happy... Then they should believe. I'm always gonna be an atheist and 99.9% of all religious people that I know are good, honest and friendly. I moved from Sweden to Thailand 5 yrs ago and live on an island where 70% are Muslims and rest of cause mainly Buddhists. All of this is for me extreme... Black magic, Muslim graveyard's on their own land, burnig their loved ones, etc and its interesting. If I just shut up, smile and watch what they're doing its really cool

I agree to an extent in that people should be free to believe what they want so long as they dont ram it down other peoples throats, try to convert people to their belief system or make laws that control and restrict non-believers rights and freedoms. The problem is that many if not most religions do just that.

Some believers simply state that they have faith in God’s existence. However, we can have faith in anything, including that God does not exist, so the use of faith is functionally indistinguishable from the statement ‘God does or does not exist because I said so’.

To defend the faith of a child statement: To give charity to the text, if children have this uncanny ability to know deeply that their parents are reliable sources of knowledge, then technically the text is not supporting the idea that we should blindly accept God, but like children who are able to trust their parents BECAUSE OF THE RELIABILITY OF THE PARENTS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF TRUTH FOR THEM, then the text shows that to come as children before God means that God has a history of demonstrating reliability to the person. To not be ageist and also nuanced, children are seen as having a sensitivity to know how deeply credible the authority figure is; children are going to see that their figures they rely on are legitimate, because of how much this authoritative figure has done for them. They don't just blindly follow anyone incidentally, they're quite alert of who's a stranger and who's not. This passage is quite good, because the text shows how God is not a stranger, but a parent BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH GOD EVIDENCED PROVISION AND KNOWLEDGE ETC. Therefore, this text could be used to show that to blindly accept the truth claims regarding God is not child like, because children don't actually follow random strangers. They cling to whomever evidences positive results to them. If I perceive God of this text to be a stranger, I will not have the ability to cling to this God, unless there is Evidence that this God is real and doing things for me, as any child would do. I have the faith of a child by having faith in something that I feel demonstrates external and internal reliability. In some sense, children are not stupid and going to just arbitrarily follow the immediate thing in front of them, unless something is clever enough to fool the child. But that takes time for children to be that trusting. So faith is not the issue for me anymore, it's whether I should put my faith in something I don't nor can conceive of confidently. Indeed, I'd say this verse is being manipulated by Ministers to get people to trust in something that doesn't internally sit right with them. In fact, people are being turned against their inner child by supporting of believing something that doesn't evidence existence or reliability. Children are pretty smart.

Joyce Meyer was an occasional guest in my parents’ home when I was young. I also attended the same school she and Dave’s kids attended. She was very rude, bombastic and controlling. I always felt sorry for Dave, her husband, and knew she was a brat. She got her start at Life Christian Center in South County, a suburb of St. Louis. She was a very unpleasant woman that is very wealthy now. She is a brat human, that has exploited many people, and folks don’t know what a horrible creature she is. I and my family knew her personally. She’s a true b.

I know it takes a long time for some people to climb out of make-believe, but this is her second call but it almost seems as if she is just so entrenched in theism, I don’t see her getting out of the hole. Moreover, her final sentence really gave me pause. She said that she would “like to come down to the Live audience one day just for fun“. To say she’d like to come by am as one thing but to add the qualifier “just for fun and is very disconcerting.

A cunning thought by Paul in Ro 9:18, "God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden". Paul is saying that God chooses some people for his and rejects the rest. The 9:18 can be understood as saying that the people he rejects, have rejected him, because of their hard heart. God does not need to harden hearts or hide the meanings of his word [Mk 4:22, 2 Co 4:3, etc.] as he can reject people in one second.

2 Co 4:4 "The God of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they can't see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God". Some people may reject the guess that the God is even human let alone a male. According to Paul, God, by making us blind, may mean to say [but dared not] that God made us stupid; unable to learn, or understand anything the scribes wrote and said. So, if God struck us dumb and dumber, why do the clergy command their sheep to blame us for not accepting their God or his word? But the scribes and/or clergy go even further in deceit and in deceiving their captives; by stating that even believers cannot understand the Bible unless they receive the holy spirit or Spirit from God.
