Why isn't the Grass Growing Under the Shade Tree? Thin, muddy, compacted soil, ugly lawn...

Thank you I have the same problem. I just reseeded a section with Tall Fescue. I had seeded with Fine Fescue and they came up so fine during the spring and early summer but after a while started to fade. They didn't actually die totally because I barely cut the area . I just cut once every 2 weeks and cut down on the watering. Anyway I took a chance and reseeded a section just to see if it would germinate in the summer here in NY and was surprised it did. So in the fall I will do a complete reseed. I guess you learn every day.

This is the problem I had. Grass was great in the spring, then got muddy from the rain this summer and is now bare and compacted. I’m thinking I need to aerate the top dress with some sand to promote drainage. The area is next to a patio, which has heavy water run off after rain. Does this make sense?

Hi what about getting rid of the tree will that solve the problem

Yes that is also an option. I don't know if I know of anybody that cut down the tree to try and save the grass, but yes that would work.

@@OrganoLawn thank you it seems shade kills grass a simple option for landscape gardeners iff the tree is not that important to them remove the tree

I am renting a cottage in the hills. It has a semi small lawn that has some patchy spots with no grass. Also a massive pine tree that shades it. I want to thicken the grass so… here I am.

I don’t know what the 1-2-3-2-1 technique is , don’t have fancy water sprinkler swathesike you showed. How do I water with regular sprinklers?
