I went to Israel for an entrepreneurship course between my university in Canada and Technion University. From my experience, I was a witness to the ingenuity, resilience and hardworking ethic of Israeli startups. By learning a bit of their history, it isn't hard to see that such an attitude came out of necessity as their best resource and capital were their people and ideas. Its an amazing country with rich history, beautiful, welcoming people and a lot of energy.

You hit on the fact that Israelis have to do military service, but this is often misunderstood. It does not means you have to be a combat soldier. You can do other things like mechanics, logistics, security, cyber security or even offensive cyber stuff. The last two are a huge reason why Israel is a powerful force in the cyber security world.

I would like to point out another reason for Israel's success in technology. From an early age, the government provides talented children the opportunity to study physics or computer science at the university and after graduation, they join the army and serve in technological positions. After they are released from the army, the large technology companies get them to work for them, and pay a lot of money, even to the beginners.

Actually they don't have enough talent, numerically, to support claim of tech superiority, productivity or otherwise. From a total population of some 8 million people, here are numbers of students in school in Israel to sober you up: Primary 828,732 Secondary 259,139 Post secondary 357,685 Based on data Israeli Education submitted to the unit for the purpose of the report, in 2016 only 151,000 students were enrolled in tech electives, with their number increasing to 155,000 in the school year 2017-2018, or 39.5% of high school students. By comparison, in 2016, Japan, population 166 million, produced 195,000 STEM graduates. Israel numbers are hidden behind paywalls, inflated by Israel government, etc. BTW, China produced 4.7 million STEM graduates in 2016, more than half the entire population of Israel, and produces more patents per year than does even America. So, the claim of Israeli superiority appears unsubstantiated. But if it helps your ego, go ahead and keep it.

It's pretty common for ambitious individuals to start a few companies until they succeed. Also the geography point is very valid. Even Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba, while having a more moderate tech environment, house many commuters 40/60/70 minutes of (convinient for work) train ride away from the center of Tel Aviv.

All the reasons mentioned in the video are all plausible but you forgot to mention the fact that the Israeli army starts taking in high schoolers for after school clubs designed to weed out tech savvy teens and recruiting them for IDF intelligence gathering. This allows for ridiculously well experienced individuals making there way to the civilian work force as adults and they do run the scene in a lot of these startups. Of course this is not the only reason but its still worth mentioning.

Another factor is the government's focus on R&D and self-defense during its first few decades of existence. Israel has not depended on US aid as much as painted by the media. Weapons and machinery are far from dependable commodities if a conflict were to break out, so they've developed their own weapons and tanks. Most of the startup capital on the defense side came from people who worked in Israeli R&D technology, and the genesis for Israel startups came based on military-related projects.

The video presenter has omitted likely the most important reason of why Israel is successful in high tech: the fact it's constantly with its back against the wall, being targeted by terrorism and potential wars. This situation pushes the Israelis to develop technological solutions to the country's problems. A "no choice / alternative" atmosphere can create (technological) wonders.

Such a cool video, really made me think of my place in this huge population meant to promote innovation, and how all my experiences up until this point were shaped by this drive. I'm also from South Africa, like Elon, but i didn't become some giant tech mogul. But i had the potential to do it - i was quite smart and productive before i fried my brain. But those same negative experience that drove me to madness may have driven someone else to brilliance and innovation. I guess the differences of our experiences lead us either to ruin or to grandeur, but what's important is that we all have the opportunity to do amazing things. I'm really thankful for America for taking me in, even though i ended up not being productive. America does some fucked up shit regarding foreign policy, but they're also the reason i have electricity and a car and the internet. I guess i kinda like this arrangement :)

Israeli here. When speaking of military service in the economic aspect, there are some things worth mentioning: First, the IDF has a LOT of programs where high school graduates are able to earn a degree(or even a masters degree) in a subject like electrical engineering or chemistry, etc. If you prove yourself worthy, the military pays all of the expenses for your education and once done you serve your years of service as a professional, which helps as a civilian to start a job. Second of all, the IDF contains several large divisions for cybersecurity. Students that learn computer science in high school(they are a lot, including me) have the opportunity to serve at one of the cyber divisions. As a result, many people leave the military with enough knowledge about cyber and computer science that not only they don't need a degree to work, their knowledge is literally military grade, which makes them very popular with tech companies.
