It's very different than running which is endurance so your body needs to have muscles that are designed to be better at specific applications. It's why someone with a grip strength of 200lbs isn't as fast at clicking a key as someone who plays videogames professionally. It's radically different applications where people's bodies have radically different adaptations.

@wileyschmitt6 жыл бұрын
People want to be one trick ponies for some reason. They aren't even real box jumps either. You're supposed to start on top of the box, jump back off the box, strike the ground and rebound back onto the box where you started. With a smaller box you can do high repetitions of this nonstop and properly develop the achilles tendon so that it can absorb more impact upon landing, making for much faster and safer 'realistic' running and jumping movements. This guy will likely have shot knees in his future because of not doing this kind of training and all the super deep knee bends required to do what he does.

This is indeed far too dangerous to be a thing that people in general to be doing, let alone honing in on and being the complete focus of their training. His jump is quite impressive, but there is hardly any other competition out there for this kind of thing. A regular no step or max vert is much more realistic for showing athletic ability.

Why would everyone just ignore the obvious full squat technique vs that quarter squat
@lukaskidd46216 жыл бұрын
My guess: even with a lifetime of training not everyone can utilize that technique to their advantage, this guy is just an insane exception.
@ErrantChordier6 жыл бұрын
technique for box jump is a little different than for normal vertical jump. Reason is you need not only to get power but you also have to land on balance at the top. In a normal jump you are slowly rotating backward like a backflip, watch the NFL combine and they kick one leg up on their way down for balance otherwise they'd fall backward a bit. For box jump you need to stay vertical otherwise you'd basically fall off the box. Full squat is better for box jump that way, but a bit weaker for normal vertical jump. You can see the box jumper has about 34"/86 cm standing vertical, which is not that bad but I have also done 34" standing and it is a LONG way short of 46-47". in short, best technique for box jump (full squat) is a bit weaker for pure vertical jump (quarter squat)
@PeterAbe1ard6 жыл бұрын

Some people just have a higher density of fast twitch muscles then others. People with more fast twitch muscles are generally capable of generating more explosive sudden bursts of strength than most with less fast twitch muscles. Most power athletes have more fast twitch than the average human. Also someone can’t raise their ratio of fast twitch to slow twitch. It’s something you are genetically prone to. i’ve been watching people say muscles cause you to jump high. it’s actually your tendons and ligaments… look at michael jordan’s patellar tendon it’s huge. every high jumper has an exceptionally large patellar tendon compared to other people. tendons act as rubber band and the thicker the rubber band the stronger the elastic energy AKA the jump. muscles just let us move but it doesn’t give us the athletic elastic energy.

True, and it clearly helps him a lot, but mostly because he's specifically trained for doing this, but otherwise it's not advantageous for anyone else. Try it and you'll see, you will get much high with a quick dip compared to a deep knee bend squat, and watch football players and hoops pros when they test their standing vert, it's always a quick dip.
@JuanPabloSecundo6 жыл бұрын
It actually depends. The bald guy doesnt have the best muscles for jumping, cos they seem to shrink slowly, the other guy seems to have better type of muscles, because he doesnt have to go down that much, so his muscles can produce max force quicker. The thing is why this bald guy jumps this much higher is because he probably has a fking brutal strength and can lift like 200kg. Best jumpers do a quick dip, but it depends of your genetics coz u might not have that quickly shrinking muscles. And of course thera are more thing in jumping that are determined by genetics like your muscle attachment, bone structure, lenghth of your tendons
@hayden05096 жыл бұрын
You jump higher squatting less. The shorter it takes to get off the ground the higher you go

The quick dip is better for rebound jumps (i.e. most sporting and real world situations). The full squat is better for a standing jump *if* you've trained it.

sorry but this video was BS clickbait. I expected a nice technical breakdown and discussion of muscle fibre force production, tendon strength limits, myofibrillator physiology, measurements of athletes across different sports, why 50"/127cm might be some magic number at the limits of human physiology. Instead we get profound statements "the way to get the biggest possible height is to have a big vertical velocity at the end of the takeoff" and "his muscles are capable of doing bigger forces than yours".

Even when stepping down in two steps, when the high is only half, he his very careful to not induce the mechanical shock that most people would get by keeping their legs straight.

It's interesting/impressive that Evan is going into a full squat position to perform these verticals. Most of the highest verticals on video that i have seen the athletes only go to about 1/3-1/4 squat.
@jamesj.mccombie50312 жыл бұрын
That’s because athletes train box jumps to improve their athletic performance. No athletic endeavour I can think of requires you to leap and land in a full squat, hence you don’t see athletes doing it. These box jump records are impressive, but they are more reliant on achieving high degrees of hip flexion at the peak height than increasing jumo performance as relative to sports.
