Jordan describes why he believes it's important to paint in these times we're in.
For more information related to the imbalance between the left and right hemispheres of our brain in our current civilization, please see the work by Iain McGilchrist and his book "The Master and His Emissary". #iainmcgilchrist #themasterandhisemissary
This is an excerpt from the online PAINTING THROUGH MODERN MASTERS course.
jordanwolfson....
Jordan Wolfson is a painter and a teacher, painting for almost 50 years and teaching for over 30 years. Exhibiting both nationally and internationally, Jordan is the recipient of various awards, including the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. In his recurring explorations of form, space, and light, Jordan has been investigating the relationships between perception, mark, and Consciousness. This has led to his experience of painting as a life-practice and a means for fundamental understanding.

I'm a painter, and I think that there is something that emerges from the subconscious. I get to a point where I have to cede conscious control of what I am doing. Then something happens that is wonderful, but not anything that I could have done through a process in which my conscious thoughts remained in complete control. I hadn't thought of it as a balance between the brain hemispheres, but I like that idea.

Thank you for this. I've been struggling to figure out how to talk with my fellow artists about how our work can contribute to breaking the self-destructive cycle we seem stuck in, and this is suggesting to me that, not only do we need to keep doing art for our own sake and putting art out there for others' sake, but maybe we should also teach art, create participatory, interactive projects, get more people doing art. Maybe that will help things. I mean... something has to.

IMO art appreciation has plummeted among the general population. We have been ‘China-ized’ into cheaper products at lower prices. A framed printed image can be gotten for $60 to fill a spot on the wall. We are over inundated with visual imagery. Small % of the population visits art museums.

This video reminds me of Katherine Bradford's commentary. Katherine is 80 years young. She is well known worldwide and a recognized New York painter. She still goes to her studio on the subway. She talks of living an artist's life. She wanted to live in her art within a community of like-minded people. That is important. To surround yourself with positive people. She says politics and the Trump politics in particular invade and take over the news that we get. It damages our "inner self". She promotes the incredible importance of taking care of your "inner self." I am hearing this in Jordan's comments too. We need people like Katherine and Jordan to voice what we may have forgotten in these incredibly dark times. Very important.

I agree that we are in the extreme of a long misalignment of a healthy balance within ourselves and with our world. As a community art teacher I have promoted to create art we must go of every thing else for a little bit and in that space we become whole and balanced once again. I hope it was helpful for all those students. It surely has made all the difference for me. Thanks for your perspective.

interesting to hear this kind of conversation - after a lot of madness in my life - both internal and external - ive come to the conclusion that allowing our brains to defer to a higher power takes all the pressure off. matthew 11, 28-30 is the passage that best explains. ive found that the brain releases endorhpines when directed towards faith - i got this from false avenues i went down even - the brain still made me buzz in a false enlightened euphoric way - this made me realise that the brain craves a yoke. its the fulcrum of the seesaw of good and evil, and it needs to be relieved of the idea that it is responsible for either end.

Some of his thoughts reminded me of a book called Sand Talk that I read recently, which I highly recommend. Reminded me of the work of Iain Mcgilchrist - he speaks to this drastic over-reliance in our societal structures on the more rigid side of our brain, and how that missing balance, scientifically, is really deleterious to every single part of human life right now. @JordanWolfson
@JordanWolfson 6 күн бұрын
First of all, I am not a neuroscientist. Everything that I've come to understand about the brain has come from the book by Iain McGilchrist, "The Master and His Emissary". With that in minid - yes, both the right and left hemispheres are engaged and work together in almost every activity and experience. It isn't so much the "what" as it is the "how". Each hemisphere has a very different experience of the world, and of "being" - a different ontology. To put it in extreme simplification - the left hemisphere cares about utility and power. The right is engage with connection, empathy, and the texture of life. Both necessary. One vital. The right hemisphere oversees the left part of the body. Thanks -

I believed this for 50 years. Now I do not. I was much the Gemini kid with twin (equal left hand-right hand being) and did not "fit with society. Later I came to realize this misfit was because society had been propagandized and controlled by liberalism ideology. Freedom meant fitting in with the correct party in control. I rejected everything good for me at times because I did not understand. Because of my nature, I was led to believe all the bullshit. This continued throughout high school, undergraduate, on the job etc. I even got it in art school. The crap was everywhere. As a biology teach I was selected to be trained to work in behavioral modification activities (NSF drug education program) and there was left braigh-right brain, and I'm okay, you are okay. I was soon working as a therapist. Same old stuff. Long story. Once I retired and got out of the propagandists rat race, I began to see clearly once again. I was in the academic arena for decades and did what was required to stay in good standing and move up. I thought it was the right thing to do. Everyone around me was doing it; professional life is competitive, which is a form of control. I first worked as a research biologist, teacher, professor, and therapist. Afterwards, I attended art and design schools and worked as Architect, Interior Designer, Project Manager and Master Planner for 40 yrs. I found every discipline informs all others. I have painted abstractly for 50 years, working in all painting media in all approaches. I have also worked in figurative realism but prefer abstract. I now am working in oil, oil pastel, pastel, charcoal , acrylic and watercolor on various supports: paper, Styrofoam, cardboard, wood, canvas, wood, and found objects. Non of the Far Left Liberalism aided, contributed or even hindered my art processes. I have merely tolerated it all as best I could, but hoped someday it would disappear. I believe liberalism is a form of immaturity and underdeveloped mentality. Conservativism comes with growth, development, maturity and self actualization. One has now found concrete answers and solutions.

I disagree with your statement that Liberalism is a form of immaturity and underdeveloped mentality. This is a rather odd belief given your many years working in various fields and disciplines that you have become more conservative in your values. I too have worked many years (50 years) as an educator and school based Speech Language Pathologist, however my conservative values have thankfully morphed into more liberal leaning views. To me, I believe this exposure during the past 5 decades of work, along with reading, attending seminars, and conferences, traveling, meeting other people and students, hosting international students from Russia, Kazakstan, Spain, Viet Nam, China,Thailand and the Netherlands in our home ( our local school has a program where students live with host families for the entire school year) have exposed us to many cultures from around the world with different traditions and belief systems. Our minds have been opened to the wonders of the world along with learning about the colorful and often sad historical events of these countries. Sharing stories around the dinner table each night were a highlight for us as well as creating special dishes to share. Also, as a woman who experienced miscarriages, 2 ectopic pregnancies that ruptured, etc. I may be conservative in my belief against abortion, however I believe that we have rights concerning our bodies and reproductive care should be in the hands of us and our doctors alone. There should be Mefipristone available in public restrooms across the country just as condom machines are available to men. Books being banned in schools is another issue, as I spent years in public schools, served on our public library board for years as well…the very idea that people are banning books because of what a group of parents like Moms for Liberty believe should be removed from libraries is scary. Another issue that concerns me is as the mom of an incredible daughter who is lesbian, her rights to be who she is , are being trampled on by ultra conservatives. I feel that intelligence, compassion and integrity are no longer attributes that are cherished in this dark downfall of our country. Banning Black History Month and LGBTQ Pride month just happened, what in hell is wrong with people that they can’t let other people live and let be? I do hope you can find some elements of liberalism and peace that appeal to you in your life. Do you paint? We have one life to live and at my advanced age, I am thrilled that I have my painting and creative hobbies that help me momentarily erase the dark days of destruction of many institutions we hold dear that have descended upon our country. Wishing you creative sparks and joy.

@@b.comeau2597 "Liberalism is a form of immaturity and underdeveloped mentality" - this is a very interesting observation - I was inclined to think it came from a poor understanding of history, and sometimes even wilfull ignorance, as it would always be the lefties who would put their hands over their ears when an offer of explaining a 'reason' was put on the table...it's like an invisible barrier just appears and blocks them. the same happens when trying to coax people out of cults - so perhaps liberals are easily persuaded, have their hearts in the right place, but lack discernment. an example - it's considered very bad to criticize a certain religion these days - you'll be cancelled and labelled if you do...yet...if you study it - listen to their teachings in their own words, you'll quickly realise that many of the teachings do not align with western morality (eg sexual equality)...so therefore, as morals are at the heart of a society, if there is a mismatch in basic moral thought, then by default friction is inevitable. but the liberals wont even let you raise the topic, let alone talk about it sensibly.

I disagree. In an individual, irrationality is born in the right hemisphere of the brain, and the left hemisphere is concerned with rational reasoning, but the world has no brain, and social psychology is governed by different laws. World politics now tends towards irrationality, where superstitions and religious movements generate violence and war. Unfortunately, rationalism associated with the work of the left hemisphere, i.e. orderly, just rule of law, is now in retreat. Yes, artistic activity is associated with the work of the right hemisphere of the brain. This may be salvation for an individual, but within the framework of a state or global movements it is a recipe for disaster.

You might be interested in the work of Iain McGilchrist. There is, in actuality, a profound difference between the hemispheres, but not in the way our popular culture tends to describe it.

It’s the artists that speak for the events of the world. When we look back through history, whenever a political movement was occurring, the art always speaks to such. I’ve never in my life ever met a conservative that appreciates or values art. Incidentally, this administration just cut funding for the arts. Politics matters.

Are you being sarcastic? Because he just started a tariff war that's going to cripple our economy. On top of that he threatened Canada. Saying how he's going to make Canada the 51st state..are you kidding me!!? Going to war with our allies is a stupid stupid mistake. We should also be thankful that a judge blocked his illegal cut on Medicaid. I can keep going on why he's a terrible human being. But like they say... "you can throw facts at maga all day, but you can't make them think."
