The manufacturers all have a certain grade of hydraulic fluid that is recommended.

How often do you change the filter

You should do it annually at a minimum. Your machine may also have a indicator that tells you when the flow efficiency is down and it is time to replace it. If you work in a dirty environment you may have to change it more frequently. Also check the owner's manual to see what they recommend because they tend to vary. Hope this helps you out.

I got a wood chipper and the hydraulic fluid looks milky. Will it stay milky or will the water eventually settle to the bottom. Or will the water stay supspended in the hydraulic fluied?

It will more than likely stay blended with the fluid. You may have to fix the leak and then change the fluid and filter.

You may want to ask the manufacturer if there is a procedure for this and what the recommended pressure is for the outriggers so that it remains safe to operate the equipment.
