I genuinely cannot explain why, but Skyrim is enveloped in this intense sense of melancholy and wonder that has faded but never dissipated. I went through a very difficult childhood, and I still remember first hearing from a friend at school about this new game called Skyrim. I bugged him for stories from his playthrough and lore of the series until my mother was finally able to get it for me. I was presented with the biggest and most open world I had ever seen, and I was immediately hooked. I spent literally thousands of hours during my childhood playing Skyrim, and it became a quirk of my personality that I was obsessed with The Elder Scrolls. Any time things got too hard for me, I had a pair of headphones and a controller that immediately allowed me to escape to a world in which I, and the actions I took, actually meant something. I even met my best friend because of Skyrim, and we shared stories, lore, and gameplay until we lost touch with one another. Now when I play, I get this strange feeling of both longing for the past, and being thankful that this game allowed me to escape it. Even the music makes me feel something in my soul. For this, I will forever love Skyrim.

I explore every inch of the lands and have found even to this day things I had missed. Just doing the quest is not enough, you have to explore everything. To me that is what Skyrim is all about. I have talked to NPCs and then the next time I talk to them something new is there in what they say. I hear so many say, "I beat Skyrim" and I laugh. You don't beat Skyrim, you explore it and finish quest if you want too. I got interested in this because of Shirley Curry watching her play in her 80's and thinking "Wow, this looks fun to play". I first played Skyrim about the same time Avarti did, only I was 46 then. It is not that we are not children (he is still one by my standard and I am envious of that) anymore it is that after awhile you realize that you can't say what you want, the NPC's rarely more than 4 sentences deep, and it is still mostly DPS contests followed by loot fests when it comes down to it. The boss fight convention is getting tiresome. I was as impressed with Pong when it came out in '72. My immersion with that only lasted an hour or so. 21 years later in '93 Doom blew my socks off and that immersion lasted a few weeks. 18 years after that Skyrim's immersion lasted a couple months about 3x over 11 years. When AGI both writes the next great game and runs the NPCs of it, we may finally have lasting satisfaction. Anyway, Avarti hasn't waited for the holy grail of computer RPGs anywhere near as long as many of us. He was born into the age of decent computer games.

Yeah, I already an adult by the time Skyrim came out. Not all of us have the experience of playing this game when we were more ignorant. I still play it today, and I don't even use combat mods. Maybe the game has aged, but honestly the only newer game I own is Shadow of Mordor, and I haven't played that in quite a few years. Skyrim may not be perfect, but considering what game programmers go through, honestly its better if we don't ask for perfection. Several programmers took their own lives due to the mistreatment they got making Red Dead Redemption 2. Now I just assume any new game lead to real-life tragedies. Point is, maybe my not playing more recent games has helped keep the game from aging as badly. I simply know nothing better. And I'll be honest, I'd rather keep it that way. Besides, we still have the Beyond Skyrim project to look forward to. It'll greatly expand the world, and actually have decent writing. Of course, who knows if we'll ever see it at this rate, given the trouble the team has finding people to work on the stupid thing, and Bethesda trying everything in their power to stop mods from working. I'm shocked the project is even still in development. Mods that old normally don't work anymore. It'll be great if it comes out, and it'll surely give Bethesda a run for their money. It may be in an older engine, but it'll still be higher quality. Besides, es6 is being made with the creation kit again, so honestly it probably won't be THAT big of a leap beyond Skyrim. Fallout 4 was a major disappointment when it came out, and the same damned engine is going to be used for es6. Imagine what THAT'S going to look like when it finally comes out in 5 years? I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it was a repeat of the release of ET for the atari 2600. Fallout 76 was already a diseaster, and fallout 4 failed to make any real impact. The Beyond Skyrim project is basically going to be what an ES game should be, but Bethesda cannot manage for w/e reason. If we never see any of the Beyond Skyrim projects (it has been a while since we've gotten an update, and they did admit some time ago the projects haven't been going too well), oh well. It is what it is. Besides, plenty of people still play this game despite Beyond Skyrim literally not existing yet. People still play freaking Morrowind, and a year or two ago they even came out with their own 'Beyond Morrowind' project (for lack of a better term). Skyrim is a younger game, so it'll probably last longer than Morrowind does. Point is, morrowind shows that old games can continue to live on, and honestly Skyrim got's far more going for it than Morrowind (other than Morrowind arguably having the better writing).

Very well put. I thought aesthetically it was a beautiful and very cool game for its time, i loved watching my brother and partner at the time play it. I was 19/20 in 2011, now i’m 32, but i can still appreciate its beauty despite its age and how many technical issues/glitches it has. Recently i was talking to my 21-yr-old coworker about it and when i said it was a gorgeous game he said “hmm… it is…. Interesting”, like he didn’t agree but he didn’t want to be rude either. I didn’t remember how old the game was and had to look it up for myself-i can’t believe it’s from 12 YEARS AGO!!! No wonder he had such a different opinion of it.

This isn’t surprising at all. Half of the content on this channel is devoted to tearing Skyrim apart despite claiming to love the game. He spends so much time hoping on the Internet bandwagon by needlessly nitpicking the game’s flaws instead of enjoying the game’s strengths that I stopped watching him because of how tiresome it got. I’m honestly surprised that it took him this long to admit that he had finally reached this point. It’s hard if not impossible to have fun playing a game when you spent so much time with the mindset of over-analyzing and obsessing over the game’s flaws instead of just taking in the whole experience and the positive elements that the game does very well. Personally I think it’s good that he’s moving on from this game, because by this point, it doesn’t seem like his relationship with Skyrim is entirely healthy. Seriously, for a while he’s talked about the game more like an ex-girlfriend that he once loved and had a bad breakup with rather than a game that he enjoys. Although as I say this, it appears that he still makes content talking about Skyrim. 🤷🏻♂️

The Unofficial Patch devs making the most fallacious arguments to avoid letting people download the pre-anniversary edition version of their mod when it's already common practice to list both pre-AE and AE versions of mods only makes the problem worse. Would you agree with this Steam review? If I play it (1st time ever) should I remove the Anniversary Upgrade content from the game (if possible)? "Why Bethesda why? Decided to get this bundle on sell was pretty excited, till about level 20~ish it just broke me. Why is none of this content even remotely balanced? The new spells, cheaper and stronger then base. New homes, make every other house obsolete and are often free. The armors, not level gated and often better then their standard conterpart, level one daedric. No elderscrolls is perfectly balanced, but this is ridiculous. All the new quests I have played have been pretty bare bones and outta place. There is some really nice things in this bundle, but so many broken things as well. If you do get this bundle please take a look at the items you decided to download in UESP."

@@PeterKoperdan If it’s your first time ever playing the game, I would advise you to remove the anniversary content at all costs. The anniversary edition is, in my opinion, made for people who already know every inch of the game and are looking for new refreshments to justify another playthrough; for those players - like me - the anniversary upgrade is a welcome one. Yes, it breaks the game and removes every last shred of balance it already didn’t have, but it’s new, and a lot of fun. However, If you are a new player, you should experience the game raw. You get a much more authentic and balanced feel for the game, and it actually feels like Skyrim. Fall in love with the game first, get bored with it, leave it, come back to it, fall in love with it again, and repeat that until you got enough hundred hours into it that basically nothing about the game can surprise or excite you anymore, and THEN get the Anniversary Content.

That's the fun thing about growing up you get to show your families kids fun experiences you had as a kid and rediscover discovery in a senses. The best way to describe it is as you get older you see a tree as just another tree you've seen them before. But it's not to a kid exploring for the first time it forces you to reexamine thing you once took for granted.
@juanjo_sound8 ай бұрын
This is kinda sad to hear. I'm 31 and my imagination is way waaaaaay more alive now, than it was when I was a kid playing these games. And my imagination was cranked up to 11 back then. But now, looking back, my child imagination capacity seems so dull and limited, comparatively. I think a well nurtured imagination will only grow and grow as we age. I know mine will only become more and more whimsical and far-reaching in its capacity to enliven the soul. But.. admittedly, this effect is dampened infinitely if I go down unhealthy lifestyle routes, such as regular unhealthy eating, not going outside enough, not nurturing friendships enough, not working out regularly, and so on. I think most people have more access to this as a kid because their unhealthy engagements haven't had enough time to break down the soul yet. Whereas if you treat your being more like a car that needs to be maintained, all that magic returns but even moreso. I think people mistakenly see it as a mindstate singular to childhood, this is wrong. Now.. i admittedly don't enjoy oblivion quite as much now as I did back in 2006. But that's because I've since become acquainted with much better game design in the years following. This causes older, primitive game design (aside from occasional timeless designs) to wither and degrade. But if a new spin on oblivion emerged, aligning with modern standards, I'd be enjoying that now more than kid me did oblivion. For instance, I recently played Stray, Inside and Cocoon, and I've been enjoying those easily as much as I enjoyed games as a kid, if not more. I'd probably say it's more, as my imagination has grown so much since then

I feel this so hard. I was at the midnight release in 2011 at Gamestop. School the next day, but I was a senior so my dad let me stay out and stay up to play it. I got through the opening and to Riverwood before calling it for the night. The sense of awe and wonder I felt was like nothing else. Beat the game over the next few months, did every side quest I could. By the time the dlc came out I had moved onto other games, but assured myself I'd come back to it. When I moved to college and got a gaming PC, I did in full force. Sunk more hours into it with mods then I did my first playthrough. Sadly, the luster of mods kept me from playing the dlc. Now, 12 years later, I still haven't fully finished dawnguard or dragonborn. The luster is gone, the nostalgia isn't enough to fuel the fire to play. I've tried and tried but this video is so true. I've moved on... The closest I came to reigniting it was when it came out on the switch. The portability made it viable and I got halfway through dawnguard... But stopped playing. Still this game holds a special place in my heart, and the teenager that fell in love with it will always love it.

I will always and forever love Skyrim and see it as my all time favorite game. I can also say that the modding community is the biggest reason why I'm still on it though, as it allows me to change up my playthroughs every time. Regardless, the game itself (the quests, lore, etc) remains the most important foundation for this desire to come back but it is the mods that allow it to truly flourish and cultivate said desire.

It's funny how I stumbled across this video precisely because I'm getting back to Skyrim after years of thinking I was done with it forever just like you're saying in this video. I couldn't play it anymore much before you and for many different reasons (being older I didn't quite grow up with the game, modding too much and ruining my saves too many times, etc). But I think life is about cycles, circles, loops or whatever. I had to come back someday, even if it's (supposedly) the last time. With how easier it is today to mod Skyrim it doesn't feel like a chore and I'm pretty sure my choice of light modding with quality of life and mild graphics improvements, as well as a museum to display my achievements will be the perfect balance to not get overwhelmed and enjoy my (hopefully) most complete and definitive playthrough ever.

I just really can’t relate because I can play the same thing over and over again and still be happy. It may not have the same feeling to it as a kid but I can’t stop. It’s basically kind of like stimming. I can’t get enough no matter how many times I play

I just started a vanilla survival play through (no exploits master difficulty). So no backpack, no camp supplies, no duping, no crazy enchanting, etc. Basically playing as “expected” by Bethesda. It’s completely revitalized the game for me. It’s like a new game. Suddenly quest that were mundane are very challenging and require preparation. Owning a horse is a requirement since you can’t fast travel. Staying at inns is commonplace since sleep is required. Finding a campfire in the frozen tundra is exciting. Perks like ‘hunters discipline’ make sense. Using poisons on arrows is now very helpful. Not picking up specific valuables to sell due to carry weight limitation is a thing. Cooking and stealing food is mandatory. Knowing which holds don’t have carriages and how your going to deal with that. Etc etc etc. If you’re completely burned out on the game but really want to play it I’d highly recommend a unmodded (except unofficial patch and visuals) survival play through on a difficulty you find just slightly too hard. I never would have never thought the start of Azuras quest would be challenging but there is no camp fire at her shrine! 😂

I feel this sentiment, I can’t really play Skyrim anymore, I’ve beat it numerous times and have come at it and it’s DLCs in multiple different ways. I haven’t done everything in the game but I’m kind of at a point in its lifecycle where, I’m good with it. Like it was beautiful, still probably one of my all time favorite games from the PS3 and 360 era, where I shared a lot of memories with my brother and a few friends while we deep dived into the game for the first few times. But I just don’t get the same feeling anymore when I play it’s 10th remaster. I honestly have a better time with Morrowind, oblivion, fallout 3 and new vegas right now but that’s just my preference because I like the older style of games and storytelling.

One of the interesting things for me about replaying Skyrim is every time I pick it back up, I find something I've never seen before. Granted, its never a questline or something big, but maybe some small location behind something id never seen before, or an easter egg. It fills me with appreciation every time knowing Skyrim is so intricately put together that I've probably not seen everything.

@curtisyue182 Жыл бұрын
@PeterKoperdan So, the thing about the anniversary content is that it's not official content made by Bethesda. It's a compilation of mods made by prominent modders curated by Bethesda. When you fire up AE, the game downloads a bunch of mods basically. I think it's $20. The review is accurate, a lot of the new content is out of place and the spells are definitely stronger than vanilla spells. But I personally like it. It's mods I wouldn't have put together, and I don't know everything in the mods so it adds a bit more of that discovery feeling back to skyrim for me. Up to you tho, you can probably find a list of the mods included in AE if you feel like saving $20

Skyrim will always have a place in my heart, I still know so much lore,characters, lines of dialogue and the sound track is still worth a listen to from time to time but it is time to move on. As others have pointed out, we are the Ebony warrior.

I think what works with Skyrim and what is impossible to reproduce after the first playthrough is that you want to explore. You are an adventurer, and the world invites you to explore, you quickly feel powerful and it feels good walking around. I tried Fallout 4 a while back, and I felt so weak, everything outside is a threat, the very air wants you dead. I hope Starfield with its setting can make us feel like adventurer again. However, growing up and understanding mechanics and seeing patterns in game makes it hard sometimes to enjoy games without thinking too much and be immersed.

I sunk hundreds of hours into that game, over the course of 10 years. I tried playing it a couple months ago but I'm so familiar with it that it doesn't feel like an open world rpg anymore, but rather some simple game like rock paper scissors. Every encounter is known and I have experienced it thousands of times, random interactions do not induce awe and mystery like they used to. I have grown up and now math and physics is what makes me awe and wonder. That outro skyrim song still hit hard tho😢
