A pilot is never late, nor early. They arrive precisely when they mean too.
@sarge6870
@sarge6870 3 жыл бұрын
I've been on 13 cruises and arrival to ports are always early. Even when returning to homeport. Can't blame the pilot when the ship is due to arrive at a certain time and arrives too early. Many pilots multi-task by serving other ships too. They may get off of one ship just to go directly to another for berthing or departure.

Pilot arrived 20 mins after the first contact , so how was he late 🤷 ships have to wait up to an hour or more sometimes before a pilot comes on board. There is lot of procedures that needs to be followed before a pilot is sent to the ship .

We took our first cruise 3 years ago in Feb, this was our first port of call, stood on the deck and watched as we came into this port, beautiful calm weather in the morning and while on the beach, but when ready to leave port, strong gusty winds and a little rough water. Just like this video when he said sudden changes in weather and water conditions.

Early/late depending on where you are. If you're in Jamaica; that pilot boat was like 2 hours early. If you're the Capt of the ship; he was on time. While Mexicans will say we'll do it "mañana". Jamaicans are early, even if they're 2 days late. No rush, no worries. Like; dat bot no goen' anywheres; wat da hurry?

I was on a cruise at this port many years ago, and a stiff breeze picked up while we were docked. When it was time to leave, we were unable to because the wind had the ship pinned to the pier. The crew had to call for a tugboat to help pull it off the dock.

The US Navy ship I was on docked at Ocho Rios, probably 24 years ago or so... great little city. Coming in wasn’t too bad, but leaving we ran over some buoys and snapped at least one line, which promptly wrapped around one of the screws. Never forget watching the Captain, Chief Engineer, and MPA in dress whites, tearing into the reduction gear, before they realized what had happened. We couldn’t really go into any of the shops, because we were afraid we’d get a contact high, and we new dang well that we were going to get drug tested after spending a weekend in Ocho Rios. The Grand Jamaican hotel allowed us to use their facilities, so we shut down most of their bars. Red Stripe is def. an acquired taste...

We traveled on the Norwegian Epic in December 2017 and they actually ported at that cargo pier lol weather was bad and there were already other ships ported at those ship docks. Epic actually ports on the other side of the island but because of bad weather we had to go to the other side (this side with the cargo pier.) We already missed Bahamas due to bad weather so they weren’t about to miss another port. It was cool because our excursion was a two minute car ride down the road (zip line/bobsled) then we hit up Margaritaville for a Red Stripe! YAH MON!

As a captain, it is a calamity, a balancing act when you are dealing with wayward winds, multiple inbound, outbound, port and starboard tidal currents, bow thrusters, prop pitch, steering pitch, along with keeping a smile on your face. Now to boot, a port pilot that did not follow protocol, by answering the ships bridge request for his service. If not for a ships load of anxious vacationing folks, I would have detoured to the next destination.

Any captain should be able to dock a ship in a sea port, particularly an open port like Ocho Rios. A modern ship with dual engines and bow thrusters can pivot so there should not be a problem. Pilots are really only needed in inland waters (think the Great Lakes, the Mississippi etc). Many countries, particularly Caribbean countries require ships to have pilots just because they want the fees. The captain obviously cannot state the truth on camera so goes with the line that the pilot is needed. Google the port of Ocho Rios on google maps. If a captain cannot get his ship tied up here, perhaps more training is required.

I'm surprised they didn't talk about how many ships get caught up on The Sandbar in Jamaica near the James Bond Pier. It's been many years since I've been to Jamaica maybe they have finally dredge the waterways better. But approximately 10 years ago ships used to get caught up on The Sandbar. Some ships even had their props damaged causing the cruise ships to shudder and Shake. Until a drydock and properly balanced or replaced.

A ship really does not need a pilot for this port. It is merely a legality. The dock is at the ocean not in a harbor or up a river.

@@ciptapradja2814 It is difficult in high winds but on a calm day it is not a problem particularly with the maneuvering aids today and in this case no other ships nearby. I grew up watching ships dock (from the ship). Father was a mariner.

there has been a port in Ocho Rios for more than thirty (30) years the "sugar mill" dock is for over spill or when the main dock is being repaired or the ship because of its differences cant dock comfortably on the primary dock go check you facts sir that info is public info

rjcass33 it's hard to stop this massive vessel when going backwards, and I don't think they are meant to go backwards because of where they control the ship, hard to see the back

It all depends on the layout of the port, wind and the set of the current, propeller arrangement, if you have fixed propellers or dynamic propellers etc. In a situation like this, I think I would prefer doing exactly what he did because when you dock while going astern, you have to start using the bow thusters as rudders and along with that you kind of loose stability in the stern since the sidemotion of the propellers change when you go astern.
