A pilot is never late, nor early. They arrive precisely when they mean too.
@sarge68703 жыл бұрын
I've been on 13 cruises and arrival to ports are always early. Even when returning to homeport. Can't blame the pilot when the ship is due to arrive at a certain time and arrives too early. Many pilots multi-task by serving other ships too. They may get off of one ship just to go directly to another for berthing or departure.

The US Navy ship I was on docked at Ocho Rios, probably 24 years ago or so... great little city. Coming in wasn’t too bad, but leaving we ran over some buoys and snapped at least one line, which promptly wrapped around one of the screws. Never forget watching the Captain, Chief Engineer, and MPA in dress whites, tearing into the reduction gear, before they realized what had happened. We couldn’t really go into any of the shops, because we were afraid we’d get a contact high, and we new dang well that we were going to get drug tested after spending a weekend in Ocho Rios. The Grand Jamaican hotel allowed us to use their facilities, so we shut down most of their bars. Red Stripe is def. an acquired taste...

Any captain should be able to dock a ship in a sea port, particularly an open port like Ocho Rios. A modern ship with dual engines and bow thrusters can pivot so there should not be a problem. Pilots are really only needed in inland waters (think the Great Lakes, the Mississippi etc). Many countries, particularly Caribbean countries require ships to have pilots just because they want the fees. The captain obviously cannot state the truth on camera so goes with the line that the pilot is needed. Google the port of Ocho Rios on google maps. If a captain cannot get his ship tied up here, perhaps more training is required.
@flow57187 жыл бұрын
yeah peggy.. i tend to agree. the pilot had nothing to do here.

It all depends on the layout of the port, wind and the set of the current, propeller arrangement, if you have fixed propellers or dynamic propellers etc. In a situation like this, I think I would prefer doing exactly what he did because when you dock while going astern, you have to start using the bow thusters as rudders and along with that you kind of loose stability in the stern since the sidemotion of the propellers change when you go astern.
