One thing not mentioned is that, during the early spring thaw, male bears are the greatest threat to cubs. Boars (male bears) will spend most of their day searching for any sow they can find. Not so they can breed (though that happens too), but for the off-chance that she may be rearing any babies, which form the bulk of a boar's protein supply at this time of year. If the boar is successful, the sow then goes into oestrus, as she no longer has any cubs to care for, and they breed.
@VexinsightАй бұрын
In simple words, by doing this, the male bear gains a meal and a mate.
@MirzaAhmed89Ай бұрын
Imagine if that's how it worked in humans.
@VexinsightАй бұрын
@mirzaahmed6589 The intriguing thing is that it is possible that humans may have practiced it at some point. Every species has some point at which they need to eliminate the offspring of a potential mate or rival in order to gain reproductive access. Humans may have had that time.

Those teenage bears you mentioned; the ones who just got ditched by mom and shoved out of her territory, are the ones we see in town every year. They’re so hungry, and our human restaurant dumpsters and trash cans smell so full of easy, fat-filled calories…they don’t fully understand the risk of cars and humans yet…so they come for a free snack and so often end up causing accidents, shot, or in the best case get tranquilized and wake up in a completely different environment far from home (and towns). You used to see maybe one or two a season, but the numbers are rising…I don’t think there’s definitive research on why yet, but we’re pretty confident that climate change and habitat loss are the reason. In my hometown, habitat loss isn’t a factor because it’s surrounded by protected national forest, yet we’re still seeing exponentially more hungry scared teenage bears just strolling around…so that makes me think climate change must be a big part of it. The first time I saw one I thought it was a giant weird-shaped dog until I got closer! They have the strangest run, those tall back legs make their bear-butts stick up…poor guy got hit by a car seconds later though.
