As someone who literally works in the autism field. Autism isn’t just being quirky and socially awkward, it’s a deficiency in dynamic skills and decision making. Current research suggests it’s due to the frontal lobe not being connected to the rest of the brain properly and problems with both retaining long term memories and drawing upon them to make judgment about current situations. While the deficiencies can be different (ranging from not being able to pick up on facial expressions and non obvious social questions to the inability to regulate emotions and entering fight or flight over trivial things like losing a board game) they are just that, deficiencies. While they’re shouldn’t be a stigma around it people need to stop looking at deficiencies with romanticism
@Cptn89934 сағат бұрын
yes, people should not romance autism but rather seek to understand it and take it for what it is. It is the same problem society has with everything. As someone with it, and also been a research subject in MRI tests, you're almost there. If I could describe the true symptoms in relation to how I've had them and know others with wildly different strains of it: It doesn't just affect that part of the brain and it also 'trades' a lot of aspects in order to function that way. however, the one time it has 'evolved' that part of my right frontal lobe had a severe migraine for several days and never again until just a week ago. - I currently (as of writing this) get automatic temporal amnesia when i draw on my short term memory or try to multitask simultaneous memory tasks such as peddling and balancing a bike. This evolved from an inability to understand social cues. totally different effects but caused from my condtion adapting to how i learned to socialise. In exchange for these 'debuffs' as it were, i find it extremely easy to code and understand complex narritive devices and convoluted puzzles, usually bordering on having enough aptitude to solve them before they've fnished explaining the gimmick or laying out all the pieces. - My friend however, dealt with severe anger issues, a lack of tone awareness, but now in his 20s, finds he emotes less to the pointt where i have to ask from his monotone deliveries what he's trying to convey. In contrast to that, he finds it easy to write literature and direct cinematography with excellent detail for shots and composition. He tends to notice these aspects too before even considering the content of what he's watching sometimes. At the end of the day we do still find some interactions vexingly annoying or obtuse, but at that point it's a problem with other people, and 'people' just being irrational illogical beings with strange biases and stranger reasons why they aren't being reasonable at times. Autistic people don't lack the efficacy of using skills and understanding concepts overall, we just trade some in for others, like how a blind man learns to hear or touch better or an amputee person gains better dexterity in their remaining limb(s).

I work in a clinic for autistic children. We have therapies aimed at making those children learn how to communicate, go to the bathroom alone, go to school and have a normal life. Essentialy, making their autism seem unnoticeable to others. I don't understand why is that controversial or hateful? There are autistic children who can't really communicate at all if something happens to them, if they get lost in the streets, they cannot tell you how to find their mothers, what their name is. Not wanting to 'cure' autism means making these people vulnerable, and it's also burdensome to the parents.
@ParallelUniversity2 сағат бұрын
The problem is that the general public never hears about the majority autistic people. They only see and hear from those who have the most verbal skills, who can post online and complain about others trying to change them. So there is this impression that autism is just about people who think a little bit different. They think they can speak for everyone with autism. Maybe THEY don't need therapy, but millions of others do. Maybe THEY are happy the way they are, but millions of others are suffering.

People get mad because curing someone means they are sick, and rightfully so. Being neurologicly wired different isnt a sickness. Yeah, ive worked with some special needs individuals and the varied nature of their needs is wild. Some kids cant stop drooling but are utterly brilliant and pretty clever (people underestimate them). Others, look completely normal at first glance but have serious issues with basic things. Thats why research and care for these people are incredibly important. I still remember one kid in particular who opened my eyes to how black/white I was viewing his situation, and I wish more people had the opportunity to serve individuals like this. The biggest issue is society and short attention span culture has tried to make autism a luxury belief. As if they have it, it gives them some kind advantage? we live in a messed up world. Same issue with OCD and ADD etc, there are a lot of peopl who actually ahve it and deal with it daily, and now everyone is being labeled it, its damaging to those that do have it.

Autism isn’t some quirky club-it’s a real neurological condition that affects people in complex ways, and not everyone with it is the same., it's sad that some mfs are so desperate to label themselves with something to feel "special" or part of a group, what’s worse is that these types end up drowning out the voices of people who actually do struggle with severe autism, making it harder for them to get the support they need. Instead of advocating for real help, they turn it into some kind of trendy identity, like a personality accessory. It's honestly infuriating.
@clinch44024 сағат бұрын
Nah, the problem is with the way it's defined. Mild autism genuinely is as widespread as it appears to be, if not more due to the number of undiagnosed gen X/Boomers. I’m just not great socially and know too much about legos and transformers. I can pretty much circumvent the negative affects just through learning about how to act in social situations. I wouldn’t want a cure. But I’ve worked with people who are borderline nonverbal, who can never have a normal job, who miss out on massive amounts of life due to their ASD. Acting like they’re perfectly fine and something that could help them speak and have a normal life is bad is awful to me. ASD IS A DISORDER, and all the people who have just a bit of it (or were overdiagnosed and don’t have it) acting like “well all it means for me is I’m socially awkward and like trains so I think a cure is bad” disgust me.

The friends I have with autism? They try to embrace their "tism" but they do express their frustrations over being unable to pick up on social cues. Being unable to make/keep friends. Unable to control their anger. They are diagnosed. It takes patience to work things through with them. I found out that the friends who dont have autism have diagnosed A.D.D./ADHD, including myself. There seems to be a mutual understanding. Behavioral quirk frustrations are a bitch and we just want to socialize. It's a hodge podge of awkwark, and no two people are the same. However. "We get it. Now, let's bring on the jokes about obsessing over topics and games."

My son is autistic. He's 21. He has a beautiful brain and is truly the source of so much of my joy. However... he, at 21, needs total assistance with most adls, including toileting. He will probably never live independently, drive a car, or even go to the food store by himself. The smallest change in his schedule sends him into a total meltdown that can last all day. It drives me insane when people who have mildly autistic, self diagnosed tics represent it as no big deal. You can only do so much nerfing- the world is just not set up for people like my son. Like every other issue that has captured society, many things can be true at once. I love and accept my son unconditionally, but I can also acknowledge that his life is much harder than a "typical" child. There's nothing wrong with an advocacy group supporting treatment research.

The problem with a full "cure" which would have to tamper with neurobiological structures, is that there wouldn't be a guarantee on how an autistic person would turn out after said tampering. They might need a tonne of help to do even basic things as an autistic person, and that's bad, and if a cure could get rid of those needs while preserving the autistic person's personality, then that'd be awesome - but also very likely impossible. A sweet autistic person being cured, they could go from being sweet, to being a terrible person. That's what holds me back from wanting a cure for myself. If I could cure the worst aspects, while maintaining who I am as a person, I'd want that. If a cure means that I no longer value the things I value, and if there's a chance that I could become a terrible person that harms people, then...I don't want that.
@NicholeCybele3 сағат бұрын
Neuroscience nerd here (focus on mental and behavioral health, particularly with autistic people and schizophrenia, and addiction as well). You can't exactly "rewire" the brain with autism. Yes, you can apply things like speech therapy, behavioral therapy and occupational therapy, but that does not "remove/take away" how the brain is "wired." Additionally, there is no specific medication for autism. You can take meds to manage symptoms to help with health issues that usually present in autistic people, such as anxiety, digestive and pain issues, etc.. With therapy though, you can learn to manage symptoms, however, that doesn't mean autism isn't there (even if you are great at what you do and aren't otherwise bothered). When symptoms are managed through medications, therapies, even exercise, and they aren't causing distress and are improving, it's usually called being in remission. (Not in remission from autism, just to be clear.) One example is that speech and communication are some of the most common things people notice. My son and I are autistic but we have different communication patterns. I have a special interest in communication and foreign languages and science outreach (I've chaired events and held speeches as couple examples, and I've done a ton of volunteer work over the last 5 years in these communities). My son on the other hand is a "Gestalt language processor," basically he learned by mimicking and talking in scripts rather than forming his own sentences and he has to use a speech tablet. He will freeze up and go mute sometimes if the communications is overwhelming. He'll eventually be able to form his own sentences and hopefully won't be as overwhelmed, but I'm using that as a simple example to explain that even down to language, the brain gets "wired" in certain ways that aren't "removed," rather we can learn to work around them. I'm very good with socializing and other subjects that don't live up to autistic stereotypes. Unfortunately I've seen both autism and schizophrenia romanticized and it's just pretty gross. One last example is just like with schizophrenia, you can't get rid of it. I hope we can one day get rid of it or have way better treatment plans. The best we can do is medication (sadly it doesn't work for everyone) and different therapies (also not guaranteed to work). You can learn to manage it and go unnoticed in symptoms, but that doesn't mean it went away. I'm also schizoaffective (on the schizophrenia spectrum) and it's not uncommon for both spectrums to cross each other, which makes treating autism and schizophrenia even more difficult. Then we get to touch other subjects. Laws and regulations, lifestyle, how hard it is to get help, and the shady stuff psychwards do to their patients. Those are more conversations for another day. ((Hopefully this was a wee bit informative!))

@@NicholeCybele Thanks for the thorough explanation. That said, I dont think the majority of people think that (at least not the informed ones anyway) We know it's not currently possible to essentially remodel and rewire your brain. But some people out there want to see a future where such becomes no longer a realm of wishful thinking but a reality. I know such a scenario will bring about a whole host of other philosophical and arguably greater dilemmas, like what is ones identity if everyone can rewire their brain and personality at a whim, but it's the trade-off I can only see us having to take, if we want to make an as moral decision as possible about how to move forward. Not striving for a cure, or even worse, not wishing it on anyone is equally morally bankrupt and screwed up as wishing autism to be eradicated all entirely. Give people like us (or our kids) a future where we have the option to choose whether or not they want neurological disorders to be a part of their lives. It is really the only right thing to do.

My son is autistic and was nonverbal until 5yo. He was very timid and introverted. We started him in ABA and Speech therapy at the age of 3. By 4 he was grunting and making noises, and by 5yo he was starting to say actual words. He is now 8yo and still in therapy and goes 3 times a week. Now, not only does he speak well, and have no problem communicating (He won't ever stop talking now and I am so thankful), but he has become extremely outgoing. He loves playing with other kids and meeting and being around new people. He still has room for growth and improvement but has been completely rewired by continued therapy and special care. He still stems by flapping his hand and dancing on his tiptoes, but he is pretty much a normal kid now and will only improve. We have made so many sacrifices to get him where he is, and we will continue to sacrifice to help him become the best version of himself. I truly believe one day we will be able to treat autism in the brain at a neurological level.

This is one of the difficulties in becoming an entertainer. We all have political opinions. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's important to keep a lot of those opinions that you have dulled down or to yourself because you are an entertainer first and foremost. A good example is what Mark Hamill did. In one event, he went and told over half of his audience to leave because they voted for Trump. Half of your fanbase is not only gone and no longer there to defend you but the money that you make in charging for autographs suddenly gets cut down significantly. It isn't easy, but entertainers who continue to this day learn to stay quiet and relax. You make money because people like you. In society, they will try to pick you apart for just about anything. Good PR equals profit.

It's insane to me that the internet's stance on autism is literally that south park episode where cartman pretends to have Tourettes and goes off about how awesome it is to a kid that actually has it, who's like "No.. It's awful." They literally think "Autism makes you so quirky and funny, and you're so engaged by your favorite characters, it makes you so interesting" meanwhile if you've spent time with someone who has autism, even if it isn't severe, you can tell how much it affects their lives negatively and especially potential friendships or relationships. TikTok tried to do the same with other conditions like Bipolar or BPD, but it didn't stick because it's harder to get diagnosed with them and they're mostly always very severe.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.. Sadly, it is like those who have replied already... your point will go on mostly unnoticed by the majority. The real problem is almost every single person has some form or multiple bias' that we were taught somewhere. Those very bias views are holding us back from being the best people we can be. We all have a pair of invisible shades over our eyes blinding us from the things we really need to see and understand. Our world needs true patience, real compassion and some serious effort to get us all working with eachother instead of against eachother. The work can only be done individually, I can only contribute through me, you through you let's reach the goal together.

its insane that you dont seem to understand what people are saying on the internet then. no one in the autistic community is saying that there is not issues and roadblocks we encounter in "normal" society. But let me ask you this, do you know the difference between driving an Automatic vehicle and driving a Manual Vehicle? thats Normal brains vs Autistic/adhd brains. If you try to drive the Manual like an Automatic you can easily damage the manual beyond repair, and yes the Automatic is relatively easier... But have you ever seen an Automatic Race Car? You realize that the Solution that places like Autism speaks would wish to apply to all of us is that we all become Automatics. No chance of being a broken mess, but no chance at being a Race Car either. The actual answer, in which the Autistic community has been screaming at you for decades is that we dont need to learn how to drive automatic, we need to learn how to drive manual, we need to be given the opportunity to become the race cars we can be. if all that race car analogy went over your head, go look up the absurdly skewed ratio of Artistic talents and the arrangement of A-typical 'mental disorders' like autism, adhd, bi-polar, etc. now go look at the same for entrepreneurial work loads, and see how many huge companies that had a single person at the helm also had that person be Autistic / ADHD. Autistic People dont need our Manuals turned into Automatics, we just need to be allowed to learn how to drive our Manuals.

tell me if your left handed do you have to "fix that" is it bad because some people could argue that the right hand is better in many cases perhaps we should start fixing people of their left hand conditions, thats what autism is, its as instinctual and natural to a person out there, the way to "fix" autism is to teach them social skills to give them therapy and help them, curing them would basically be a personality lobotomy which can seriously damages ones psyche, theres no real way to prevent autism, theres no real way to cure it, and its a lot more nuanced and complicated then fixing it

@jim.rnilsen9 The problem with Autism Speaks is how they go about it. Go watch some of their ads. They're downright horrific. They always depict autistic people as insufferable burdens instead of human beings. In one of their ads, a mother contemplates committing a murder suicide because her son is autistic. Most autistic people are functional human beings who are wired a little differently. Even as an autistic myself, if I could genetically prevent my kid from being autistic, I'd definitely do it. There's a lot of hardship that comes with being neurodivergent, but for the vast majority, it isn't the end of the world. Autism Speaks depicts autistics as horrible monsters that hurt everyone around them and practice atrocious "treatments" that are borderline torture. Ideally, the severe symptoms of autism should be cured, but that's not what Autism Speaks does. Even within care, there are still a lot of problems with how autistic adults are treated. We often get infantilised despite being fully functional adults, but Autism Speaks only ever talks about how much of a burden autistic children are to everyone around them.

Some movie stars need to be replaced…I saw an ad on the street for a movie with Jamie fox and Cameron Diaz and I thought “dann, same people from 25 years ago, I’m out”

They seriously need fresh blood. I looked at wicked and both actresses are way too freaking old for the 18 year old characters they play. Or when Leo did that flowers moon film and he’s nearly 50 playing a 24 year old. They just did it again but I can’t recall that one. And these actors don’t even have the pull to automatically bring an audience anymore
