I've heard stories about her on-set. She is very much a 'working class' actor. By that, I mean, that if she is hired for a role, she doesn't just act on-set. She helps the gaffers to carry the lights and reflectors. She takes out the trash from the break-room. She puts coffee on for the extras. She engrosses herself in the entire production...everything from sweeping glitter off the stage floor to laying down her lines in front of the lens. I have so much respect for her and for her work ethic.

Jamie winning the award kinda felt like her winning for her entire body of work, but also her parents' body of work. Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh have made some of the most important films of all time. And one thing people really like about Jamie Lee Curtis is that though she is a nepo baby, she's always been hyper aware, and very humble about that fact. That made her speech extra beautiful. And she wasn't even expecting to win clearly. Is it right for the Oscars to pick a winner based on a career? I don't know... but if anyone deserved it, it would have to be Jamie.

@@lilrysosa I never argued about who gave the best performance. That's ultimately a pointless discussion. Some people preferred TAR over EEAAO in the best picture category. Some people preferred Puss in Boots over Pinocchio... What I'm saying is: if we're going to pick a winner because of her career anyway, at least I'm okay with Jamie Lee Curtis winning, because she actually has an impressive career.
@blakegillpuente3904

I disagree with the idea that she was awarded for her entire body of work. I do think both Jamie Lee Curtis's whole career *and* Angela Bassett's were probably key factors in how the Academy voted, though, but not in the way most people think. For Angela Bassett, Queen Ramonda feels a lot like performances we've seen from her before. "Waiting to Exhale," "American Horror Story: Coven," and "What's Love Got to do With It" all show strong similarities to what we kinda all expect from an Angela Bassett role, now. A strong, matriarchal character who's been screwed over (usually by a man) who finally hits a breaking point and delivers a highly emotional monologue full of tears and resilience. It feels familiar, and that may have played against her. For Jamie Lee Curtis, she doesn't really have a history of "serious," roles. She's widely known for horror, action, and comedies with none of her previous roles being anything like this one. Additionally, she *completely* transformed for this role. It kinda reminded me of how Gabourey Sidibe changed for her character in Precious. The voice was different, the posture was different-- every aspect of who the actor is in real life was *gone* on-screen. It wasn't a big, flashy performance, but it was grounded, and dramatically different from anything she's done before. So, yeah. I agree both of their whole careers came into play, but it wasn't as straightforward as saying "who has the better acting resume," because Angela Bassett would take that pretty easily.

In the Oscars defense, Jaime Lee Curtis' win was something of a makeup from not giving her any nomination from some of her best work like A Fish Called Wanda and True Lies. I fully acknowledge that Jamie likely won for reasons aside from her performance, such as her overall career, the legacy she represents, the perception that she is overdue for this kind of recognition, the wide-open nature of her category, and the juggernaut of a film she was in. Having said that, I think she deserves the Oscar on performance alone. I thought so when I first saw the movie in March of 2022, but I doubted the performance would survive the pitfalls of awards season and wondered if the movie itself would even survive. But it is a specific and tonally complex performance of a role that I doubt even existed on the page, which is further evinced by how much credit the Daniels have given her for inventing aspects of the role. I cannot imagine another actor (even a more respected, more versatile actor) making Deirdre register in the way that JLC did. One of her hallmarks as an actor is that she throws herself entirely into every role and this is no exception. That she was remembered at all, in that role, with everything that happens in that movie is a testament to how good she is. It has been disheartening to see her work dismissed, especially given how atypical the film and performance are. If anything, can’t we be pleased they voted for something so radical and unusual? I can’t think of another Oscar-winning or -nominated performance like it. Which brings me to something I find especially great about this win. As mentioned before, Jamie was overdue for this, and the main reason she hadn’t received this recognition previously is due to the kinds of films she typically makes: comedies, thrillers, and horror movies. Her filmography isn’t the Academy’s cup of tea, so how great is it that she managed to win an Oscar without breaking her own mold? She didn’t have to do a biopic or embody an Oscar-friendly trope to finally hear her name called.

It's annoying that folks keep saying she's long overdue as if she had Meryl Streeps career and was repeatedly shut out of the Oscars. She has never once given an Oscar worthy performance further proof of this is the fact A Fish Called Wanda is being mentioned as her Oscar worthy performance and it isn't even an exceptional film on it's own. Her career is more like a job for er. No controversy. The one time she played a prostitute it was an Eddie .Murphy comedy

I love both Jamie and Angela. Both phenomenal actresses who are long overdue for this kind of recognition. If either won I would have been happy. Im happy for Jamie. One factor I thought of is, the future for these two women. Jamie, in my opinion is unlikely to get nominated again. Angela on the other hand has the opportunity to take a leading actress trophy if the right movie comes along. She will be even more overdue, tremendous talent, and she just has an ability to draw you in with any of her projects. So I think they voted for Jamie cause she was great, she was overdue for it, and is unlikely to get another nod in the future. Angela was great, overdue for it, but has more potential and more of a build up to a win in the future. Hopefully a best actress.

Yes, there are other better acting performance of Jamie Lee than this one. But, no way Stephanie is better than her. People think her as the best. It just happens that she is the central character and her role is crucial for wholeness of the movies. She is on every scene, and her flamboyant costumes drives more attention than her act, but they overlook her mediocre acting . There are better options than her to fill the role.(of course, I'm not saying though she is bad) Jamie gave everything on this movie. .. First of all, Her nuanced portrayal of Deirdre is quite fascinating than histrionic portrayal of Jobu Topaku . She is natural and versatile: she can be comedic, she can scream, cry, be pitiful, be funny.. she can have all of these different characters in her every version while maintaining her sorrowful persona.. She can make you intrigue and that you are curious about her in the entire duration of movie. that's how good she is...

I remember telling people that that was Jamie Lee playing the IRS agent and on first glance and they didn't believe me--that's how transformational this role was. Just like Streep did and so many others who actually were transformed into someone much less attractive and willing to go that extra mile, I feel she was rewarded for "acting"--portraying a role very far from her real persona. Please be serious, her character was not as consequential as Stephanie’s for her not only to be nominated but to actually win. eeaao wouldn’t be what it is without Stephanie’s character, imo she is the heart of the movie. There isn’t a single good explanation for why she would win over her not to talk of the other nominees

I liked your point about JLC winning not for an Oscar bait drama, but for an authentic performance that matched her varied body of work across horror, comedy, and action films. EEAAO distilled all of that into one role for JLC. It's wild how many people are salty over her win. Guess that's why it tastes that much sweeter. People wrote her off thinking JLC wasn't the type of person who could win an Oscar and that her performance wasn't on the same level as her category peers. Thank goodness, the voting was left to experts who know what to look for and not armchair critics. EEAAO was the most exciting film of the year and the four veteran actors who won their Oscars deserved it.

I honestly loved Jamie Lee Curtis in the movie! As you said she could’ve been in an Oscar bait movie and give a typical Oscar performance. But she didn’t. She chose to do a role that was wild and against type. And I’m all for that! Would I have preferred Stephanie Hsu get the award? Absolutely, but you can’t deny Jamie was a standout in the movie as well. I take this as a more comedic oscar win, like Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost.

Hi, Brian. I watched you and a lot of movie critic/pundit videos on KZbin predicting who would win leading up to the Oscars. And some of them erroniously said that Angela Basset was in only 10 minutes of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, so she didn't deserve to win because of that. In my opinion, those critics couldn't have actually seen the movie because if they had, they would know that Basset was in over two-thirds of the 3-hour long movie. She was front and center for most of the movie. I'd even argue that she should have been in the Best Actress category instead of Best Supporting Actress! I say all this to say, when Oscar experts put out that narrative, they kind of ruined Angela's chance for an Oscar win, in my opinion!

I thought her performance in Freaky Friday was masterful. No shade to any of the other nine million actors who've been in body-switching movies, but she was one of a very few who fully committed to showing the complexity and nuance of a teenage character, rather than just going for broad farce. I didn't expect her to receive an Oscar nomination for it, but Tom Hanks scored one for Big, so it wasn't that unrealistic. As for her Oscar win now, it's a great career capper for an actress who was not to proud to sell yogurt for a number of years.

You mentioned of the possibility of Kerry Condon doing the Mark Rylance type of route in winning the Oscar. In all honestly, I didn’t really know who Kerry was until the awards season for Banshees. She’s been in Marvel films playing the voice roles, and some American TV projects. Though she’s not yet in Rylance’s level when it comes to name recognition prior to her Oscar nomination. I think one of the reasons why Mark Rylance won over Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor is because of Mark’s prestige in the theatre world. He IS THE Mark Rylance, one of Britain’s greatest actors of the stage. If there’s Olivier and Gielgud in one generation, and Ian McKellen and Judi Dench on another, there’s Mark Rylance in his generation. He won multiple Oliviers and Tonys, even if his screen credits are few or not much highlighted prior to Bridge of Spies (and eventually he got booked to more movie projects too). The British bloc of the Academy really helped. I guess there’s also the Theater bloc of the AMPAS, though I’m not sure how many mostly stage actors are Academy members. They invited Nathan Lane a few years ago, as well as Patti LuPone. I’m predicting Simon Russell Beale and Ben Daniels (Rylance’s fellow contemporaries in the West End) to be Academy members soon, who both have good screen CVs. I look forward for your Oscar analysis on Rylance vs. Stallone for your future videos!

I think you almost got it right. It's the way that she talked in those interviews about the movie, her career, and her parents in such a giddy and humble way. All that she expressed in her SAG speech she had done similarly in countless interviews--instead of talking about the nomination, she talked about her career with a gratefulness and with such a positive buoyancy, that it was infectious. So yes, she campaigned, but it was the way that she did it that made voters want to give it to her.

Now I need her and Angela in a movie doing something together and I can die in peace. My issue with Supporting categories is that too many leads are going there to try and win because they can't do it in the Lead Category. Brendan Gleason should not have been in this category, he was a co-Lead. Mahershala Ali should not have won for Green Book, he was co-Lead. Michelle Williams was the Lead Actress, yet so many people thought she should drop down to supporting just to win. This category was created to honor character actors. I think they should make it a rule that you can't be in more than say 40% of a movie and be considered supporting. Jamie reminds me of Marisa Tomei who people still think shouldn't have won. I'll bet there's hardly anyone who remember the other actresses and movies that lost to her, but have probably watched My Cousin Vinny numerous times. The way Oscars are going now "And you mentioned something about not being on the screen enough" an actress such as Beatrice Straight will never win again.

Another incredible video, Brian! Your reactions are pretty much just like mine when Michelle Yeoh won, I was immensely elated for her. So well deserving and groundbreaking. Your reactions are delightfully contagious, when you smile and jump, everyone else can feel it. :) And your explanations pretty much match up with mine. SAG & BAFTA are pretty much a seesaw in different years, with the pendulum usually swaying to SAGs one year for an actor and the BAFTA for the other year (usually SAG & BAFTA means 100% lock). With SAG going 4/4 with actors this year, I think we're going to go with their hunches for next year (especially since BAFTA went ZERO for 4 this year). I love Jamie winning for her overall career but she was my personal fourth favorite behind Angela, Stephanie, and Hong Chau for me. I do hope Angela gets a more meatier role in a non franchise film that could hopefully get her enough industry support to finally win, she is long overdue.

Among those fans are many Academy members, as you can hear during the Oscars presentations, they screamed out whenever it's mentioned. I really enjoyed your video by the way. Very thoughtful and it's clear you put a lot of thought into it. When they called her name on Oscar night I shouted out that Halloween won. That's just me, so. I feel that your 6th reason really hit the nail on the head. It was a fitting tribute to a fine actress who yes, got her start in the horror genre and may have fallen by the wayside like a lot of other actors who started there. But she didn't, she had and has, staying power. I think it was Roger Ebert who called her one of the most intelligent people in Hollywood and I of course have never met the woman, but I can imagine she is. I think she is a lovely lady who as you correctly pointed out, is so generous, especially when it came to her co-stars in EEAAO. I am thrilled they all won too. I would have liked The Banshees... to have won for Original Screenplay though. The man has lost for 2 fantastic screenplays, In Bruges and Three Billboards but I feel his day will finally come. As for Curtis, her day had come and I look forward to seeing her more now, seeing as winners generally get a work boost after a win. It took me three tries to get into EEAAO but I finally got it and loved it and will rewatch it in the future. Curtis was a fantastic support, as it should be, to Yeoh, who I adore. Good for her. And as I started by saying, deep in my heart where it will always stay, Halloween got something too. Thanks again for a thoughtful and entertaining video Brian.

For sure JLC won for riding the EEAAO wave, and the machine created by A24. Always keep in mind, 5 nominees, 1 will win, 4 will not, her chances were as good as anyone. You're right that marvel films tend to not do so well in the Oscar's, im just guessing at this point.

@@anthonyt219 Yes I can understand your point but I feel like excluding blockbusters, the movies that keep Hollywood alive is kinda crappy on the Acadamy's part. Your reaction to Michelle Yeoh's win was identical to my reaction for Jamie Lee Curtis. I believe it was truly deserved....she transformed herself for the role, unlike Kerry Condon (a young Irish girl playing...a young Irish girl); she was helped no doubt by the EEAAO juggernaut, which most of her co-nominees would not be; and she truly was a SUPPORTING character, unlike Stephanie Hsu, who was really the second lead and, in my opinion, nominated in the wrong category.
