Because the current working environment is not as bad as you think. According to the OECD, the average Japanese person works about 8 hours a day, which is about average for OECD countries. And the busiest time for trains in Japan is 6:00 in the afternoon. That means most people are home by 6:00 p.m. Of course there are people who work until 10 or 11 o'clock as you mentioned, but that's only some of them. You should stop stereotyping Japanese people as if they all work like slaves. Incidentally, it is also a myth that the birth rate will improve if the working environment improves. Finland, which is said to have the best work-life balance in the world, actually has a lower birth rate than Japan.

@@asdfghjjhgf Yeah, if I were to guess, people constantly bring up Japan’s work hours because it’s probably one of the most well known downsides of Japanese society (even if it’s untrue). Also this video has interviews with pretty young people who are probably in university, considered by a lot of people to be a break for Japanese kids after high school, who aren’t working the more intensive salary man lifestyle

I agree with this one! Money is big, but I'm not convinced it's harder to raise a kid here for financial reasons than in other developed countries. Childcare is low-cost (and free from 3 years old) and high quality, there is significant financial support from the government per child, and housing and food costs are not prohibitively high. Yes, you may not be able to send your child to all the extracurriculars and juku and whatnot, but it's not the most expensive country to have a child in. It's more affordable than many.... HOWEVER, work culture here makes it SO hard to find balance between work and family. Many families have no choice but to follow the "traditional" man works and woman does childcare model, because men are not allowed to come home early to pick kids up from daycare, etc. That's a woman's job. So what happens to the careers of Japanese woman who are HIGHLY educated and prepared for the work force? They just give up everything they worked for to instead stay home cooking and cleaning? While some women want that lifestyle, I think you can imagine how a sizeable number have decided to opt out. Or what if they want to try to keep their careers? That means shouldering BOTH the bulk of childcare and home responsibilities at the same time as making things work in this very male-breadwinner female-homemaker centered work culture. That's not a very attractive option for many, either. So in other words...if even a percentage of the women who have been well educated and prepared for work decide to, you know, actually keep working...you'll never be able to keep the birth rate up. Japan needs to modernize its work culture to adapt to modern society and its needs...that would do more for the birth rate than money, from what I can see...

I gotta applaud these guys for giving some very good takes on what the issue can be. Of course none of them wanted to say the "karoshi" as being a large factor, and how the corporate world can lead to boss's monopolizing the time of young adults that could be used to find a date or a partner, but I don't blame them since it is probably taboo to do it publicly (KZbin), and they may face backlash.

Getting similar lifestyle here in the U.K. .. people just can’t afford to have a family at all right now and it’s worrying and sad. I would of loved to be a mother by now but by the time I spend money on rent and bills and food I have not much left and neither does my partner. Food prices have risen by 40% and gas and eclectic also as well as rent. We are heading into a serious problem that our government doesn’t seem interested in fixing.

It's an issue for all developed countries. Governments are basically bleeding dry the citizens, then they act all shocked and surprised that the economy, birth rates and anything related to citizens is declining or rising (crimes are rising, for example.) The wealthy people get wealthier and receive help from the government (protected in their tax frauds/evasions), while the average worker is just hit with higher taxes and cost of everything, while their wages is staying low. It's ridiculous. Politicians have been living in their bubble of wealth for generations, they all come from the same families or wealthy circles, so they have no idea how expensive life is or how difficult it is to get money. They're people who'll easily spend 250$ for one person at a restaurant every couple of days, why are they the ones deciding for billions of citizens who'd never be able to afford that ?

The rising costs of raising a child and lack of support are understandable since it’s also happening in many other developed countries. Hence, this fuels a singles lifestyle even among JP men. This may sound like it’s wishful thinking but if Japan wants to seriously solve the birth rate problem in the long term, it should address issues like I mentioned.

A lot of people don’t know themselves at all, they are only selfish and ruin their kids because they think that they have to have them because “society expects that” while not knowing how to raise them at all

Children are very adapted to their living situation. I don't think monetary asset should be considered because life is precious on earth. How men and women have conflicting needs about social status is concerning. I believe those that have understood each other's emotional needs will achieve great satisfaction then have children. But if the men never understand the wemon and the wemon don't recognize the men, platonic thinking will not change.

In Europe more couples don;t want to have kids because of their freedom without them.... For me i am 22 i am doing very good on financial side..i have 2 company, but i really don't want a kid this young plus i have a lot of fears..why if i have a kid with a women than she will left me or divorcing for me and the kid(that's a reason), in this day divorces are happening more than marriages... plus other factors with a kid.. For me until 30-35 i can't even think about having one.. And this mentality is almost in every young man and women out there in europe with high education + living in a big city is expensive like here where i live, i paid for a flat like 790,000$, a car in leasing it's like 3-4k $ per month, utilities + food + other necessities and so on..

In the U.K. we are also experiencing something similar but we aren’t fully there yet. 25% of women are not having children right now and when the topic is brought up in university’s the professors are “cancelled” aka silenced and some even losing their jobs as it’s going against the new agenda in the west which is extreme left politics. Their is no room for middle ground anymore and both sides of the extreme are in charge. Women my age do not want a family they want a career or want to stay single. Some like myself do want a family but our way of living has skyrocketed recently. Food shopping has gone up by 40% as well as gas and electricity and rent. Even if you wanted to have a child it would be incredibly hard and uncertain as your not left with much at the end of the bills. Our government refuses to do anything about these prices as their friends are in charge of some of these company’s and they are making a lot of money from these price hikes. My country is dying out and it’s dying out slowly and it is run by pure greed and no care for its people. That’s on both sides of politics. My country will be facing very similar problems like Japan very soon as well if we continue to avoid this topic thanks to us going down this new path of identity politics and extremes. That’s just my opinion and I hope it makes sense. This all seemed to happen very quickly and I honestly don’t see a way back from it .. we are heading into the unknown and it’s scary.

if society makes it difficult to have children, less children are born. expecting women to "accept their duty" and abandon careers to take care of children is not a winning position. After breast-feeding is not an option, (due to choice or weaning,) there is no biological tie to an individual parent. Until gaijin and half-Japanese can become "true Japanese" the culture is doomed.

Of course, there are plenty of people who force a child on someone who didn't want any, kind of like "I really really really want one, it'll be fine, trust me !" or an ultimatum, and the other accepts not because they changed their opinion but because it was either accepting to have one kid or lose the person they love. Not explosively, but steadily, especially from the incomes of essential workers. Young men's fears about marriage are both realistic and 観念的or 妄想的. でしょ? They may need a phenomenon like a catalyst to set off a chain of events. I don't feel like money should be a deciding factor when having children because life is appreciated on earth. But what I do think is the problem is that there is a misunderstanding about social status and quality of life. And the difference in men and wemon emotional needs. The question being are men understanding wemons need for emotional oneness, and the other important questions, are wemon recognizing what men do for propigation for their species. But until this differences in gender are understood, the platonic thinking won't change. Children are very adapted to living situations, and appreciated in all there different stages. So naturally when two appreciated each other there will be children and nothing for Japan to worry about. There is also other laws of attraction that will come into play I believe, such as an child appreciate man with emotional needs magnetic attention to a validating woman.

Or is the problem there is a common lack of appreciation of greatness? It's important for spiritual growth. And parents must be ready to love the child more than their self, so without this acceptance of greater goodness the dynamic may not be valid.

Without financial stability there is no life for a child. Bullying is predominant in Japan and SK where kids get picked on for not blending in with everyone else or coming from poverty. Those kids grow up traumatized or blamed by the parents as a burden and financial strain. "I did it for you" "I work my butt off for you" is something no kid wants to hear. Love fades with financial stress. You can preach all you want but I know damn well if I want to be a mother, I would want the best for my child. This includes being able to afford good clothes, food, a stable home, extra circular activities such as sports, travel experiences, family time, money for university/collage, potentially a new car when they get older. I do not want them to limit their opportunities for growth and success due to finances. Instead I would rather provide my child with multiple opportunities and the chance to study or do whatever they wish instead of focusing on getting a job so the family doesn't starve. This being said the working hours mixed in with women being unequal is not a good mix for Japan. Many women have limited opportunities and are seen as gold diggers for not working and raising a child at home. While others are seen as selfish and a bad mother for pursing a career. There is no winning for the women in that society. Whatever they do they will be blamed and ridiculed. Plus cheating is so common in Japan why should they be bound to a man that cheats for the sake of their child having financial stability? They know if they get a divorce they can't afford to raise the child or go back to their careers since time has passed. Maternal leave doesn't exist in Japan you basically forfeit your career the minute you have children. The workplace makes it difficult for mothers to come back. The Japanese government does not give tax money back or give money for child support like a lot of other countries do. Nor do they raise wages instead they decrease them while making everything else expensive. You can appreciate life all you want but if that life is suffering than your appreciation means nothing.

@@stuff787 I'm not sure work-life balance and gender equality affect the birth rate but Finland is said to have the best work-life balance and gender equality in the world, but its fertility rate is actually lower than that of Japan. Conversely, fertility rates are higher in countries where women's rights are not respected, such as the Middle East and Africa. And Maternal leave exists in Japan. Japan's parental leave is legally required to be taken for a maximum of eight weeks, which is average compared to other developed countries. Japan has also ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, which prohibits discrimination or dismissal of female employees because of parental leave. If a company in today's social media-enabled Japan were to unfairly fire a woman, it would instantly become an issue and be in the big news. In fact, my sister took parental leave at a Japanese company and has since returned to work there.

Hugging is healthy, practically perfect. No movable parts, no battery to charge, no insurance needed, no inflation, no refundable, allways returnable. 100 percent healthler. But the blind cannot lead the blind. There is programs for the fickle years bullying is consistent at school. No, pointing the finger at others and leaving it a problem isn't the answer for the sober minded, neither is making changes without a plan. I'm encouraging people to believe in a beautiful future and not live as adult children of alcoholics fearful of the next higher-up. And embrace relationships with what is great. Look at so many who came from nothing and are now successful. If there is the love of childbearing and a plan to raise the child to adult age the parents must be optimistic and believe that out of crisis will produce perfection. The anchient map of the body and it's energy will reassure the weary of emotional stress. There going to relax and have children!

Japanese women often complain how immature boys are but when you see their POV. You can actually see how they're looking more into how to support a family. Women on the other hand are just complaining about how men don't express their feelings or affection.

Women also talk about the money issues, I've seen plenty do it. And not expressing yourself is a big issue in a relationship. How are you gonna make a marriage work and raise a human being if your partner is as expressive as a dead fish ? It's normal that they care about that. I bet if all women were never ever expressing anything and the best you could get from them was passive-aggressiveness and sulking you'd also say their lack of ability to express themselves was a problem.

@@Libellulaire Where did you see women talk about money issues. All the money related thing I saw was "how much do you expect your husband to make" Depends on the relationship. being too emotional can be seen as immaturity in most cases. But for lovers I guess expressing your intentions might be better.
