Still perplexed why Belmonte didn’t at least attempt to pick up the 8-10 split. Maybe backup ball to the left of 8 pin?

Oh, Belmo 100% was trying to make that. Double-tapping the 10 and hoping it bounces is a much more likely way to make the 8-10 than trying to cut the 8 directly into the 10 like what you're describing... and that's exactly what Belmo did, just didn't get the right bounce.
