Hello again, from Charleston WV! I told ya about the bubble wrap on the window.... LOL 😂 I recently lost my husband of 30 yrs to Esophagus Cancer... It was stage 4 before we found out what was wrong an he lived a short 6 months after the diagnosis..... He was my best friend, my High school sweet heart. We have 3 children, 2 beautiful girls an 1 Son who we lost in 2004. He and my Father were both in a fetal car accident. I am at a stage in my life that I need a change, I have been looking at making a drastic move to AK. I don't mind the being alone part AT ALL, I have found that being alone is quite therapeutic for me. I want to tell you what a blessing you are with all the information you have given while on your own journey. It has been so helpful in a lot of the decisions I have been making for my own journey. I do enjoy your weekly videos an look forward to the upcoming ones for sure. Thank you so much, God bless you an who knows, we may run into each other out there in AK at the nearest store.... Lol Many blessings to you and Kenai. Thank you again

I have seen some absolutely gorgeous remote cabins and property in WV! I was just looking through Zillow when searching for my Alaska property but I never priced them! But like you said, it's a drastic move to Alaska! I hope my videos help prepare you for that cabin journey! Sounds like you have been through a lot of loss and many people come to Alaska to "start over" but it's tough! And if we met at a grocery store sometime that would be awesome! :-)

I live in Mississippi and recently started following your channel. Although I am not planning to move to Alaska I am getting lots of great information from your channel. This past year I have went through a big change myself. My husband lost his job as a farm manager and the house that was included in the job. We had to move from a 3 bedroom home into a tiny dilapidated camper his brother had. I have had multiple spinal surgeries due to Scoliosis and hadn’t worked in years but ended up having to go back to work to pay for a shed home I bought… so here I am in my retirement years working again to pay for it .I really am enjoying your ideas and Alaska is beautiful! You’re an inspiration ❤️

Having recently moved several states away, I would recommend being very careful what you sell off to move. Selling off durable goods, like tools, cookware, quality clothing, etc simply because you don't have room to take it with you, in my opinion is a waste of valuable money. If you sell something at 50% (or more) over what it would cost to replace, you are wasting funds you could use elsewhere. Yes, it may cost you money to rent a trailer or truck, but that will be FAR less than replacement costs. I only sold off the things I no longer wanted, hadn't used in years, and saw no need for those things in my new location. I bought my own cargo trailer, packed it up myself at my pace, then rented a storage unit near where I moved to store the things I would not need immediately. Again, these were things I knew I would need at the new location (at some point), and they would be expensive to repurchase. Also keep in mind, if it was a quality item when you originally purchased the item, it will be unlikely you will be able to purchase the same quality today (i.e. they don't make it like they used to). After setting up for my immediate needs at the new location, I then bought (and built) some additional storage buildings to move the stuff out of the rental unit. I spent a little extra money moving the items, and to temporarily store them off-site, but that gave me some breathing room to decide how I wanted to set up the new place the way I wanted it, having spent some time there. As it turned out, things at the new location were much different than I originally thought. Plan for your plans to change... because they most likely will.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska

I think the biggest "lie" that is told about moving to Alaska is to get rid of everything because it costs so much to move up here. And that's true but wow everything is so expensive up here and your choices are not as great. I only packed what I would need to literally survive a winter. When my son comes up with a Uhaul with all my stuff it will be a lot of stuff. I kept ALL my tools and thankfully some dressers. And I cant find an open top 55 gallon poly drum in the entire state of Alaska! So he will bring be 4-8 in the Uhaul. I did enjoy just throwing away a lot of stuff I carried with me from house to house. Sometimes never even opening the box again. I filled that dumpster to the very top but I kept all the good stuff! Thank you Larry!

2 is 1 and 1 is none! You are a planner. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! Sounds advice on your kitchen items, finding quality can be a challenge anymore. Love cast iron! From your 1st video in the series, added items for your vehicle if you don't already carry them could include spare belts and at least one wiper blade. Thanks and be safe!

Yes cast iron is absolutely the best! I will buy cast iron anything when I see it at yard sales or thrift stores! On my crazy trip from Colorado to Washington, I made sure I had spare belts and I had an old set of wiper blades as back up. Before I left I swapped them even though they were not too bad. So just kept the set as backups. Nothing like watching your wiper blade fly off while driving a wet highway! :-) Thank you Ashley!

You definitely thought things out, good for you but, if you want to be really self suffient, you need to befriend some Alaska Native Elders to teach you how to preserve without all those modern implements. The Elders didn't have any of those or not many of them back in the day. There just may be a time when you can't buy those things or get to a store that sells them. Just a thought, thanks for sharing.

I think two of the hardest parts of making the move is trying to decide what not to bring and what to do with the things you are not bringing. Your video really helps with the first part of that decision-making. I struggle with the second part. I can't just store stuff I don't use now forever. For example, all the plaques, certificates, and awards, that used to cover my "I love me" wall in the office. I'll never need to display them again, but I find it hard to even think about throwing them away.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
I had similar "I love me" stuff as well. All my arts and crafts stuff I made and was so proud of. I gave it all away and it was kind of hard but liberating. I think with plaques and certificates, you could take some good pictures of them maybe? I noticed now that as hard as it was to give away or throw things away at the time, I don't even think twice about it now. No idea what those mean to you but you will still need things to hang on the wall of your cabin too you know! You have that entire loft you could completely cover! :-)
@mimiashford5544
@mimiashford5544 2 жыл бұрын
I went through the same thing when my boys were grown & knew they wouldn't want all the little art projects, love notes, crafts, report cards, awards, etc that I gathered from them through the years so I decided to photograph everything and put it in digital format for them to have later if they ever want to 'stroll down memory lane" and threw everything out. It was a good way to free up space but not totally get rid of those precious memories. I DID save the sports equipment for them for their own children as well as few irreplaceable mementos (first blanket, first shoes... and made sure everything fit into one of those plastic bins w/covers. I taped their names to them & they are available when they want them. :) I'm currently doing the same digitizing of ALL the family photo albums (there are dozens) to de-clutter and free up space as well. Technology CAN help us in some ways....

I've been thinking about your garden this spring. You need a battery powered electric fence to protect the perimeter of your garden. you can get these at hardware stores, some big box stores and even online. I would suggest at least 4 strands of wire to protect from everything from rabbits to moose and bears. put the bottom strand at 8" above ground and then space them at whatever intervals you want. you can't let the bottom strand touch any weeds because it will short them out, so you will have to clear them out. you will also need the fence posts as well. From the pictures from one of your videos where your garden will be you might as well not plant a garden until you do this because the animals will eat everything up as fast as it comes above ground. One other benefit is after the bears and moose get stung a time or two they will probably take another route around your place. Wishing you well.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
I am definitely going to get some electrical fencing! Looking to get some around the cabin first so I don’t have to worry so much about just going out my front door! :-) But you are so correct about the garden. Don’t even bother without an electric fence. A regular fence might work but the power a moose or bear has will make a regular fence a minor inconvenience without that shock! I watched a couple videos showing bears and moose touching the wire and it’s comical. I didn’t know about them getting shorted out. I’ve also seen some fencing that has plastic posts so you can move the fencing around but I’d do some log posts for sure! Thank you very much! :-)

Hi from Florida. I recently found your channel with the video of your Starlink install. I've subscribed & am now watching your videos in order starting from the beginning. I love Alaska & have visited many times, mostly by cruise ship but have twice gone on vacation there in the interior, one of which was still in the winter (month of March) or it may have been "Spring" to you but definitely "Winter" to me. I think that time was my favorite visit since I was able to see so much more of the beauty of Alaska. I often ponder moving there when I retire but I don't think I could live that far away from my children & future grandchildren. So I'll just continue to visit when I can. I admire what you're doing & appreciate the beautiful views you show us.

I usually try to have 2-3 backups of some kind. Some of them may not be preferable but it's definitely better than nothing. Like your dollar a day prep videos though, you can add variety to some backups to not make it so bad. And if you can make something dual or triple purpose even better. It's an ongoing goal though. There is always something that needs to be backed up or replaced. :-)

When I move up next year I'm planning on buying a 6x12 cargo trailer. Whatever fits in it gets to come, anything else gets sold. The only large pieces of furniture I want to bring are my grandma's old solid oak dining table and my Purple mattress (and any Ikea I can fit in), so between my Tundra and the trailer I should be able to fit most of my things.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 жыл бұрын
I suggest you bring as much as you possibly can! A 6x12 will fill up really quickly too! Yes you can buy anything in Alaska but you will find that your choices are limited and everything is more expensive. I always recommend to bring up as much as you possible can afford to! Oh and many websites (including some items on Amazon) will not ship to Alaska. No IKEA out here so even if you decide you don't like it anymore, I think IKEA items resell quickly! You have time to plan! I bet you are excited though! 🧡🤗💚

Another awesome video, with great information! I loved Kenai's little stolen moments of fame...😁🤣! I live in western NC. While I'm not off grid like you are, the pandemic taught me a lot of life lessons...always be prepared for the unexpected! I taught myself to waterbath & pressure can foods, and had a container garden. You can never be too prepared! Take care of yourself & Kenai! Look forward to your video nxt week! 🙏

Good video. I live in North West Indiana by Lake Michigan. Nothing like you experience as far as living off the grid. I like the idea of making use of your canning jars for taking supplies with you to Alaska. I have canned in the past, it's a great feeling to see all the jars in the pantry. And the taste is worth the effort. Peace

It looks as though we started living Off-Grid about the same time. I moved up from the west side of the Denver area & spent my first night here on Aug. 3, '21. You passed within 9 mi of my place on your way up to Baggs, WY. If I need something from the store sometime from around Dec.- late May I have to snowmobile out 8 mi to where I park my truck & then 25 miles to town & then back home the same way. I have Solar & a couple of backup gens. I do have a shallow well on my land. I have to bring it 200 yrds to the Cabin which makes it relatively convenient. I use snow water in the winter for utility water. I live in an Aspen Wooded area of which my 'compound' has been carved out. The Cabin is a 1978 model that folks used seasonally & didn't really put much effort into maintaining. That's a challenge! I can stick pipe together but I'm not a carpenter so I've got a lot to learn. Anyway, You are very inspirational & I like your approach to living the way we do. Talk to you later...

When I did it the first time I couldn’t convince any of my friends to join me, now I don’t even want anyone to come with me. I’ve done it for several years. I admire and envy you. I’m not real sure that I could handle the solitude but I’d sure love to try. There’s no chance of it happening. My husband would never do it so I’ll live that life thru you and you do the job well. living in northern Ontario we often have power outages; our only source of heat is a propane furnace as we got rid of oil furnace and wood furnace due to hole in firebox. We are considering putting a cookstove in now; the heat is so much better with wood for sure. Our 120 yr old; drafty log house is not the same without the ambiance of wood heat. We sure miss it and are resolving this issue this year. I pressure can everything I can and it saves so much money growing our own veggies. When my husband got laid off for a month I was thankful for our vast supply of items I had done down; veggies and meats and preserves. Love your series so much

You saying you pressure can everything and it helped when your husband was laid off for a month is literally the same as me living remote.
