Why K2 is a harder climb than Mt. Everest

Vanessa O'Brien is an expert mountaineer. She is the fastest woman to climb the highest peak on every continent and the first American and British woman to climb K2, the second-highest mountain in the world.
Here, we talk with her about why Mt. Everest isn't the hardest mountain in the world to climb, and why so fewer who attempt K2 ever make it to the top. You can learn more about O'Brien's adventures by following her on Facebook and Twitter. Following is a transcript of the video.
So when comparing Everest versus K2, they are very, very different.
First, you have two different countries. You have Nepal versus Pakistan so I'd say technically it's more challenging to get to Pakistan to get the visas, the logistics.
You've got different tracks in, so the track into Pakistan to get to K2 base camp involves traveling over a glacier. A glacier is harder to climb, you've got mixed rock, which makes twisting an ankle very, very easy.
When you're going up to Everest Base Camp, you're just on a dirt trail so it's very, very easy.
Also, when you're traveling on K2, you're packing your whole expedition and you're building tents along the way, when you're traveling to Everest Base Camp, you're staying at teahouses so you don't have to travel in tents.
When you're on the actual climb, K2 is shaped like a triangle so it's demanding 110% day one, whereas Everest, there's twists and turns, so it's not always climbing steep.
Weather is much more unpredictable on K2 and I would say the technical climbing on K2 is hard so Everest has the Hillary step, which everyone's heard about, that's one obstacle. But for the most part it's pretty - the paths are well laid-out because a lot of people climb Everest every year where K2, there is very few expeditions that climb because there's such an unpredictability of summits.
And it's more technical so, it's more of a mixed rock, ice, and alpine climb so you have places like House's Chimney and Black Pyramid, which are hard rock climbs in the middle of an alpine climb. So very, very different.
If I look statistically, there's a 40% chance of no summits in any one year so this is a really tough mountain. There's less than 400 summits overall compared to Everest's 7500 summits so just remarkably how much harder K2 is every season that presents itself.

The Lamborghini in which Chris beat Rihanna - Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a quote from a mountaineer's biography. It's one of those quotes which only has credence in its original context. I.e. participle context. Taken to the nth degree, one might imagine a mountaineers' dinner party split into two distinct factions: one group convivially indulging in wine, chatter and laughter, carelessly dropping vol-au-vents on the floor - while a select few hover above them, cross-legged on magic carpets, tacitly emanating zen. The latter contingent are those who've had tea and crumpets with the Loch Ness Monster, of course. They're there to bolster the ranks of a party set diminished by the unforgiving K2 equation: achievement of K2 summit = immediate and ultimate cessation of social engagements. That's what I imagine when I see that quote, anyway. Thumb me up if you agree / vote me in and I'll declare a month of public holidays with drinks and snacks thrown in.

If you watch any interview or read any books written by professional mountaineers who have made the summit of both K2 and Everest they will tell you from first-hand experience that K2 takes way more skill and is way more dangerous than Everest. This debate has been settled by the professionals who climb mountains for a living. Any loser with a big checkbook can get to the top of Everest considering the Sherpas do 90% of the work for you while K2 on the other hand takes a true professional to reach the summit and even if you're a pro there's a good chance you could get killed on K2 unlike Everest.

She left called for help and in the end the help team decided was to late. Vanessa O’Brien protested in a tweet that was not done enough for Mackewicz, she donated $3000 for the rescue. Is well known and an un written rule, in DEATH ZONE you cannot help anybody that does not walk. See 2008 tragedy on K2 or 1996 Everest / Rob Hall. You end up dead yourself

Most of the people climbing Everest have no business even being there. They're just millionaires hoping to get a selfie on the summit and have no problem paying guides and sherpas to (almost literally) drag them there. There's a reason the summit ridge is like a traffic jam whenever there's a weather window, not to mention all the stupid avoidable deaths up there over the last decade. Anyone who joins an expedition and climbs Everest on their own merit has my utmost respect.

K2 is more technical, it's more challenging as far as actual mountain climbing goes. While Everest is more commercial and much more easily laid out trails Everest is so dangerous because the height. You are not supposed to be up there. The second you enter the death zone your biological clock starts ticking. You have a limited amount of time before cerebral edema takes hold and you die. Everest has no rescue or helicopter options. It's an alien world up there. It's so large it takes 2 months to climb. You get nice teahouses on the way up but once you get near the summit it's a warzone. From camp 4 you leave at midnight where it's freezing cold but the closer you get the summit it gets colder. It's a 19 hour walk from camp 4 to the summit and back, no rest. No stopping. On the perfect day anyone can climb Everest. But at that altitude your skill, your strength and your climbing knowledge won't matter if altitude sickness kicks in, you're left up there if you can't walk. K2 can kill you from rock slides, avalanches, falling and so on. Everest just sucks your energy, your mental ability to think, your ability to move and breath. And you just fall over and die. You can't compare them on danger cause they're polar opposites.

literally only a 200 metre difference, so it makes no difference. The death zone is just dependant on the altitude, its not a name only for Everest. its just named the death zone because past that point, no human can survive for over a few hours.

Mate if it wasnt for sherpas in Nepal I can guarantee you that the fatality rate for Everest would skyrocket and surpass K2 by a lot. Sherpas literally lay the ladders, ropes, carry oxygen tanks to camp 2, 3 so that even ameture climbers could summit Everest. They also have been doing this for generations so they know the geographic thoroughly and are adapted to survive in low oxygen conditon. Id say that less than 5% of the people to summit Everest would be capable to do it without help of sherpas other than that everyone would def perish.

Mt. Everest: Highway Traffic Jam in the Death Zone for hours + much easier climb. K2: Much harder climb, fewer people made it to its summit. And there's the other summits that only a few expeditions have been done, however, there are summits within a continent or 2 (Island or mainland) that are so remote from any settlement, and climbing those with supplies would be something to do as though it's not as popular as Everest is.

The amount of research went into making this video is amazing. How could you avoid the fact that there are sherpas putting their lives on the line and only a handful of people would be able to climb Everest without them. Of course, it seems easier because Sherpas have so much of knowledge accumulated till now and because you are just following the herd in climbing seasons. (Nepal government's policies on increasing tourism revenue has led to so many novice climbers getting permissions which is also a prime cause for deaths of climbers every year). I think this video misses a lot of impoprtant aspects.

@@washedupwarvet2027 at the end of the video she presents a number to say how many people reach the summit of these two mountains. I am not saying that K2 is anywhere near easier to climb at all. I am just saying that if it weren't for Sherpas, a lot of those summits to Everest wouldn't have counted at all. No one is screaming Sherpas around here but they do deserve credit where it's due since they don't get much in their own country and I am from that country.
