My theory is that Kakashi never knew that he had a mangekyo Sharingan till he fought against Itachi . When Itachi used his tsukoyumi on Kakashi , Kakashi probably tried to copy it later as he is known for copying jutsu but as itachi's jutsu was only specific to his eye that way Kakashi found his own ms ability

I think he knew how to use it yet also thought that he couldn't tolerate the strain on his body. He might have become more tolerant to the pain and figured that he could finally use it after being put under Itachi's Tsukoyomi and stabbed thousands of times... maybe Itachi wanted to push Kakashi to his limit like he wanted with Sasuke. Kakashi definitely knew about the MS in part 1 since he mentions it in his fight against Itachi. His mistake was thinking that the base sharingan could fight it. I think the most probable thing is that after fighting the akatsuki Kakashi knew he had to increase his stamina and that's what he focused on doing in the time-skip so that he could use the MS.

My theory is that whenever you unlock a new ability in Naruto, you get an owner's manual sent with it. It costs extra cause, you know shipping is so expensive nowadays, but you know they gotta learn about the abilities somehow. Also, every arc, the people are actually sent an updated version of the owners manual, to alert the user if their product has broken in more, or has gotten used to the it's own functionality. The manual includes how often you can use the ability, what it does, and how much chakra it uses. Also, I forgot to mention, the stats of the person is automatically sent to the owner's manual makers, and the user can tap their chest and see their own current stats similar to Jumanji but it's only visible to themselves, to make sure they have enough chakra to perform the action.

My personal theory has always been that Kakashi studied the sharingan during the time skip to help Sasuke. It was obvious Kakashi still believed in and cared for Sasuke. Having experienced the true power of the sharingan Kakashi realized just how little he knew. If he was ever going to get his student back and help him, he was going to need to learn more about the sharingan. Kakashi wouldn’t be able to defeat/capture Sasuke, defeat Itachi, or save Sasuke from Itachi.

what really confused me about this, later on at least, is that as far as i undestand it, the special chakra in the brain that awakens the later stages of the sharingan, seemed to be uchiha specific. so, even if kakashi got a sharingan that he couldnt turn off, he shouldnt have been able to awaken the mangekyo sharingan. and if he is able to switch between normal and mangekyo, why cant he turn the sharingan off? it seems the amount of control he has over his sharingan is odd.

Itachi amd Kakashi were jn the Anbu at the same time, and Itachi is known for preferring the use of genjutsu and other mid to long range techniques that dont require direct hand to hand combat (stated at least once by kisame, who we can assume has spent more time with him than anyone else in the previous decade), kakashi wouldnt need to have Mangekyo Sharingan to be aware of at least some of itachi's abilities.

I think theory 1 makes sense but theory 2 is wrong. Beacuse at the 4th great ninja world Kakashi asks tobi "where did you obtain that eye?" And Tobi responds that "During the last Great War if I dare say, the battle of kannabi bridge, the same battle where you earned the nicknane, The Sharingan Hero" That means that he knew about his mangekyou sharingan at 13.

Kakashi definitely knew about MS in part 1. During his fight against Itachi, its implied he knew about it. I think when you awaken the sharingan and the MS, it become something instinctive. His body couldnt handle the MS so he didnt use it during part 1, willingly or not. He probably trained his sharingan during the time skip, making it so he can use it casualy like an Uchiha. Then he trained his MS and his body adapted pretty well. He used it quite well during his encounter against sasuke

Another thing is that Kakashi's Sharingan did go up a Tomoe so if he assumed it was anything Sharingan related he would probably assume it was the fact that he killed Rin his emotions were flowing he had just used a Chidori and maybe his Chakra got spiked so much by the Tomoe evolution that he passed out he was also on the battlefield so maybe he would have thought that he just lost but got saved. Also even if Kakashi did know about the Mangekyo this situation is unnatural the Uchiha's lore they don't always know the true truths. This is why information is so powerful in Naruto. Knowing the truth is powerful. They think Madara killed his brother but we of course know that's not the case. So most probably think you need 3 Tomoe and then from that point kill your best friend and yeah. Another thing is that Kakashi if he did know about the condition he would think it's just the kill your best friend condition and honestly he might think that Rin wasn't his best friend if anything it was Obito who he assumes is dead so he likely believes he wouldn't ever have a way to gain it and he never would want to do that anyways.

Kakashi would definitely know about the Mangekyou imo, he literally was Captain on a team with Itachi in the Anbu, plus a Root member. It would be in the definition of his job to know ALL the possible abilities of his teamates and while Itachi may not have had MS at the time, with Kakashi being a "base" S User.. they'd have chatted a bit and likely trained with it together. I dont think he'd ever have used MS intentionally due to the drain until Itachi defected, and he wouldnt have read anything from the Uchiha tablet about it till then either as I'm sure the Uchiha kept that hidden very very jealously. As the only real S user and former teamate it would likely have been a known fact that Kakashi would be first in line to take Itachi out(obv he'd have been "hiding" too well as an Akatsuki member) so it would make sense for him to explore every avenue possible to train his MS he just didnt have the stamina. As for when Kakashi would have learned he HAD MS, I believe Hiruzen and Danzo would both know with him from the debriefing after the Rin fiasco. "Kakashi, how did you kill 30 chunin/jonin yourself? Oh ya know I felt my Sharingan explode with this feeling and then passed out from the Chakra draw, and woke up in a field of blood and bones. Oh, Can you show us? *Boom" Kakashi knows but cant maintain it.

Kakashi trained in the time-skip, I swear he said something about training to be able to even handle 1 Kamui at a time, anything above it and he'll die from the sheer level of Chakra it requires to use. And.. I mean, low and behold he died against Pain using it. The Sharingan is uniquely created SPECIFCALLY for Uchiha clans, as their chakras can handle the required "Fuel" for Sharingan to spam even the base level. Kakashi had to train up to the usage he CAN do with the Sharingan as it is. I mean, since his is constantly activated he can't just train and turn it off. So the power is harder to master for him. I've always wondered how the Uchiha who DO awaken MS would know what their Jutsus are going to be, my assumption is that the Jutsu that awakens from Sharingan is something that you, as the user, are adapt at using, for the most part. Like Itachi was great at Genjutsu and so his MS was Tsukuyomi. Maybe they have a feeling as to what their Jutsu will be based off the unique chakra mix that it produces, something like a Genjutsu has a different mix of Chakra, so Itachi would know that his Eyes have Genjutsu at an OP level. Kakashi might've just had the same thing. Since the hand signs are weaved, they are different chakras, therefore the user would just have an idea as to what the Eyes would do. For Kamui there might've been a unique signature that kakashi would know what it does and therefore uses it later after training.

Because it's a retcon. Kakashi trained his Sharingan in the 3-4 years of the time skip and Shipuuden more than the 20 years of having it, which makes no sense. Not to mention, how would he even train something that would immediately kill him upon use? With Eight Inner Gates you could reasonably say that you go through the movements on lower gates, without dying, and that's how you practice. It even makes sense with Guy not being ready for it and having to acclimate. With Kakashi, it's just bad writing.

Jiraiya sealed some ameterasu away when itachi and kisame attacked naruto in the hotel, he shared wht he learned with kakashi because they share responsibility for Naruto's training. This isnt directly in the text, but we can figure it out using context clues since Kakasho and Jiraiya have a meeting litterally everytime we see Jiraiya visit Konoha (these meetings always have something to do with naruto or akatsuki)
