Why Katy Perry's "One of the Boys" Is UNDERRATED

This week, we’ve celebrated 14 years since Katy Perry released her debut album, “One of the Boys” and to commemorate it, I’d like to talk about why this album is underrated in Katy’s discography.
Many are quick to discuss the success of “Teenage Dream”, how “PRISM” has two smash singles, and defend or criticize “Witness” and “Smile”. “One of the Boys” seems to be consistently left out of conversation when it comes to Katy’s albums.
We’ll talk about some pretty brief development of the record, as we have covered Katy’s struggles to release her debut album, and if you’re interested in her journey to “One of the Boys”, be sure to check out my video on her unreleased album “Fingerprints”. One of the Boys is a good album. A lot of people appreciate it for the singles but the tracks are just as good in my opinion. Lost, Fingerprints, Mannequin and the title track are my favourites. Waking Up In Vegas should of been a number one in my opinion also.

A main issue with albums doing badly is the singles. The album gets judged way too much on the singles instead of hearing the fully body of work. Beyoncé said nobody’s making albums anymore, but Katy made this and it flew under the radar. The whole theme of the album helped me understand who I was as a teenager and the songs really spoke to me

I have always said with my whole chest One Of The Boys is Katy's best album as a whole. Yes other albums have bigger songs than the ones on this one but this is a front to back album for me. I love this album and I think it definitely still holds up

When I think of that album I think more of her guitar singer songwriter presence, looking back after prism i think it would’ve been a refresh for the public to see Katy’s follow up more personal edge back with guitar songwriter roots to balance out the polished commercial sound

If You Can Afford Me ❤️ I love One of The Boys, I seriously can’t believe how under appreciated it is 14 years on. It’s such a raw & uncompromising album, & I think the pop rock/pop punk style suited Katy’s vocals very well. I was so happy she played Hot ‘N Cold Warped Tour style at her residency in Vegas, it literally brought me to tears 🥹

This album will always hold a special place in my heart. I got it as a birthday gift in 2008 and I’ll always remember listening to it front to back every day haha. My favorite was I’m Still Breathing..Even at my young age I could feel the emotion and sadness in that song and I just really loved it. But the whole album and all the songs are just so special to me and I always have good memories listening to it 💕

It had two of the biggest hits of 2000s like I Kissed A Girl and Hot N Cold and now its having 1,7B views and 1,3B streams. Too good for an album that released years before streaming era and even KZbin was not that popular in 2008-2009.

one of the boys was katy at her most raw and unfiltered lyricism. she had the young angst and rebellion while mixing in her quirks and playful personality. she should go back to these type of songs but i doubt that will ever happen because shes matured past that. her ballads though such as thinking of you despite having moderate success is still played to this day and people relate to it because her voice is so expressive. just like how totga didnt top the hot 100 but is still regarded as a massive success for the general public. katy should do a ballads album because of her emotive voice and storytelling. she should stop trying to be the bubble gum pop star her label is pushing her to be and go back to her roots.

Imo this album was her peak in songwriting - kinda similar to Taylor Swift. This is especially apparent in songs like Thinking of You, Self Inflicted, and Lost I wish she would've stuck with this form of songwriting tbh, and I also wish she'd release vault tracks like The Driveway (my favorite song of hers as a vault track 😭)

I think the reason why a lot of people do not care about this album that much are Katy's vocal choices. She sounds really raw and crude on some of the tracks and her voice sounds imperfect, which really deviates from her more "popish" and "clean" vocals on her next albums. Obviously this is a product of her wanting to go with that rock influence she had, but I know a lot of people who do not enjoy her voice when she uses it like that, which is a shame and reminds a lot to MARINA. I don't know why, and I enjoy PRISM, TD and Smile a lot, but OOTB really feels like true to who Katy is (the title track really sounds like a personal story, and something that she went through, Mannequin is such a clever and well written song, and even songs like Self Inflicted show how good Katy is at creating interesting and different storylines, she is literally saying her partner is toxic, but despite that, she chooses to go on anyway, and she does not portray that in an obvious way) . I feel like her next records are giving the "produced" version of what she wants to say to be able to connect with people (even deep songs like By The Grace of God, Choose Your Battles, Into Me You See, Only Love), while in this one she was given all the freedom she wanted maybe because her label did not care about her that much. She basically became a pop icon, and now she's "deemed" to only write catchy songs, which it's even affecting her own perception of herself (seeing herself as the clown of pop), I don't even know that given the freedom, she would able to write like this anymore. If you have never listened to this album, do it. You wil discover that Katy has more in it tahn just the pop icon we know and love.

I thought that I Kissed A Boy was pretty good pop music hit. The rest of the album fell pretty flat. My sister just reminded of KT Tunstall. What I thought it was Goldfrapp?… Way too many. Hot and Cold were really boring. Waking Up in Vegas reminds me of Kylie Minogue Did It Again and Rebecca St James Cds. Katy has a beautiful talent. Video was beautiful as well. I remeber living in Las Vegas that summer. It holds a special memory. This cd came alittle bit after the Ashlee Simpson backlash, and tbh, there were way to many pop rock acts for me. I preferred the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs at that time. I remember that I thought originally that Katy Perry was a copycat of Lily Allen and they both sort of competed in that lane. Zooey Daschanel had a good album and hit tv show. This was was always competed against to California Girls Katy Perry for me. Thank you for the vid!
