Even though the noise of screaming riders can be annoying, it requires way less noise dampening as voices are in the mids. The roar of a rollercoaster are bassheavy and subbass heavy which is causing alot more noisecomplaints. You'd only have to plant a few trees next to the coaster to reduce screaming noise. In fact if you are sitting behind a wall (in your house) the noise of screaming is already reduced drastically as Mids really dont have that much energy compared to lows.

I'm surprised there was no mention of the scream guards in place at California Adventure. The Disneyland resort is also famously boxed in by suburban sprawl. While Disneyland itself benefits from its berm and abutting mostly other Disney stuff, save some hotels across Harbor Blvd (but the part of the park next to Harbor is comparatively quiet - just the Autopia and Monorail), California Adventure gets closer to the mix of Anaheim, and the southwest corner is right near some small hotels and neighborhoods. The now-named Incredicoaster has large tubes around major drops specifically to mute sound. When the Maliboomer, an S&S space shot, was still in place, all seats had plastic screens in front of them to muffle the screams of riders. Anyway, you definitely bring up good points, and unlike Disney, Knott's has neighborhoods in close proximity on many sides.

My first thoughts about this addition were “what about the noise”, but the more you look at the design and the 2 layout examples, I believe the noise issue is definitely being factored into the rides design. When you compare the two layout proposals you can see that the biggest changes with the newer layout moves the drop further into the middle of the property, adds the tunnel at the bottom of the drop and removes the “spaghetti” section from the corner of Western and Crescent. Factoring in that the turn after the drop and the turn around on Crescent and Beach being heavily banked and the many low to the ground elements have me believing they are doing their best to get the ride approved. Just as a note for the folks not familiar with the area, Crescent Ave and Beach Blvd are busy streets so noise isn’t as much as an issues, Western Ave however is not, hence the scream tunnel added to Pony Express, so moving the main body of the ride further away from that area is very telling. I mean I think the placement of the new parking structure is telling as well, it doesn’t appear in the first proposal at all, but with the ride being moved closer to the hotel it’s probably considered a noise buffer also. Also, has anyone considered who, how and why these plans were “leaked”, if the park wanted to apply some pressure or suddenly have some major proof of interest to show the city, could there possibly be a better way to do it? I mean why show the original layout unless there’s a message trying to be made about the changes made to the final submission? Lastly, I do believe the effects of the pandemic will push the city to approve the ride as well, because “tax dollars” and $$$ this type of addition will bring to the area economy will be to hard to pass on. I have faith in Knott’s current leadership, they have shown an amazing understanding of their place in SoCal market and pride in the parks history, they have been doing their best to fix some of the mistakes that were made in the early years of the Cedar Fair purchase, like the terrible public park/beach style restrooms and bland soulless additions, Knott’s has truly come into its own.

I always feel like I can hear the sand in it because it was done post-manufacturing, so there's more space for it to rattle around in there lol. I still think it's possible for Knotts depending on their negotiations with the city. It's also possible that they could get creative with the way they build parking garages and/or also build a wall-like structure around the ride (sort of what they do alongside major US highways) to block the sound. The park is going to have to expand into that parking lot someday, so it's an issue they'll have to address eventually. Why not for a badass giga? lol ... you literally said pretty much all of these things after i typed them, but I'm gonna leave my comment anyways for engagement. You're welcome lol.

Every single one of the homeowners and business owners around Knotts knew that there would be a loud amusement park right next door before they purchased their properties, so they have no place to complain. What was there first, the urban sprawl or the park? If the park was there first, people who decided to move nextdoor, should have known what to expect. Same goes for people who decided to move nextdoor to an established racetrack, railroad or railroad yard. Some may call my stance dispassionate, but I think it is logical. It is a different story if the homes were there first. Then it is up to the park to abide by the concerns of the neighborhood. Part of being a good neighbor is knowing what you are getting yourself into and respecting what is already there.

I grew up in Buena Park where Knotts is located. The tract homes were there first. Knotts started as a Chicken Dinner restaurant. As the restaurant grew in popularity, Walter Knott had Ghost Town added to give diners something to do while they waited for their table. Eventually rides were slowly added and Knotts became a theme park with the majority of the park bordering non residential areas. With the sale of the park to Cedar Fair, the park has grown significantly. Cedar Fair is able to invest in the park in a manner the Knott family never could. The park is now significantly land locked. For the GIGA to work, the plans in this video are really the only option. You can actually make out the engineering firms logo at bottom of survey plans. They're scribbled out but can still make them out if look hard. They could also build a wall along property to deflect/dampen some sound. Gotta love riders screaming haha. I've truly never understood that or being scared of a roller coaster (short of like, fear of heights.) I think it's totally a taught behavior. Monkey see, monkey do sort of thing.

@@bigblueamusementproductions Of course, but we're talking about price here. Being earthquake proof can basically double the price of a coaster. Steel Dragon 2000 cost 52 million in 2000, which is about 82 million today. Orion doesn't have its anti-rollback pawls down by default (similar to Intamin cable lifts). i don't know how exactly they're accomplishing it, though my guess is that it's nearly identical to how Intamin does it (Eddy currents hold the pawls up in place until the train stops or travels backwards, and they fall due to no current or a polarity reversal) this completely eliminates the mechanical noise of them slapping up and down on the bottom of the train. so B&M has already done this and will likely do it again in the future, including on this potential coaster.
@ElToroRyan3 жыл бұрын
That’s not exactly how it works. The anti-rollbacks on Intamins are down by default, but are lifted when a wheel attached to the bottom of the train spins against the lift hill. The energy generated from this causes the anti rollback pawl to lift, but if the wheel slips or the train stops moving, the pawl falls back down and makes contact with the rollback teeth. But this contact for the wheel that lifts the pawls only occurs on the lift hill. So for the remainder of the ride, the pawls are just hanging down. Orion is probably similar unless B&M is using a completely different system
@protowave3 жыл бұрын
@@ElToroRyan WHOOPS, thanks for the clarification! i didn't realize that the Intamin pawls fell down after the lift hill - now i know! as far as i can tell, Orion doesn't have a separate track for a wheel on its lift hill, and i was unable to hear the pawls as the train went through the course when i rode it repeatedly... so i'm not sure what they're doing exactly. AFAIK it's the only B&M like this.

That's the one thing I don't like about B&M. Riddler's Revenge is downright unpleasant to be around without earplugs. I don't even bother with it unless I have a FastPass these days cause the queue area is so loud. The screams could much more easily be dampened with tunnels, but at the end of the day, you're going to hear the ride from 100 feet away no matter what. Reminds me of building Gold Striker at CGA, which added all those tunnels and half-tunnels. Given that even GhostRider has the big shield on its first drop (is that for the hotel guests?), we might see a lot of those on board. Also, if it's mostly over the parking lot, I wonder if the Western theme is even going to factor in, as it seems to with Gold Striker and GhostRider...

Fury does have sand in all open parts that could cause noise but the fact of the noises comes from the not only the wheels but the design of the front car if anyone know about Arrow dynamics you would know that the air is being pushed to the side because of how the front car was designed

First, Knotts has existed long before those residential neighborhoods. Everyone who lives nearby is doing so knowing fully there is an existing theme park nearby. Nursing home? Old people are hard of hearing anyway. Who else could be bothered? Maybe the homeless and crackheads on Beach Bl. Either way, they definitely have solutions for the noise issue. I think money is the number one reason this will not be built. Knotts is a huge contributor to the city and local businesses, and I think Buena Park will likely approve any such project that may bring them more positive attention and funding.
@firebirdlover44603 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Most of the people who live around Knotts have annual passes. It is literally their playground. And the city would jump at the idea. Money is what will be the real issue. Multi level parking garages are outrageously expensive
@sijdnsd64603 жыл бұрын
If Knotts was in roller coaster capacity before the neighborhoods were introduced then the residents have little to no claims at all. However, what could be a sticky situation is how roller coaster was Knotts when the neighborhoods were set up. If Knotts has a better claim, they can win in court.

@@firebirdlover4460 yep something like $25-35k per space. But I do believe a new structure is part of this project so it must be already accounted for in the cost estimate.
