To be honest I'm glad that Kobe and Shaq split when they did, otherwise we wouldn't have got to see Kobe's individual dominance carrying the Lakers and the Wade/Shaq connection in Miami. Too much of a good thing always has consequences.
@AR-vz3pf7 жыл бұрын
SpyHarms yeah i get you but i would have loved to see them atleast till 2006 because then Kobe would take the nr1 spot on offense and Shaq could play a similar role as in Miami

Kobe had a pretty good Squad when he won without SHaq tho. He had Prime Gasol and Odom was ballin. Bynum was still up and coming but still a massive body that could defend along with some good shooters and perimeter defenders. Dont forget he also had Adam Morrison :)
@SwishScopeOfficial7 жыл бұрын
+AR2 Agreed! If even one of those knuckleheads were smart enough to be the better man, they'd have 6-8 together and Kobe would've had his Finals MVPs from 2006 onwards. As long as one of them was showing by example that they could be the better man and take one for the team, the other would've followed suit I'm sure. I hate to discredit Detroit's amazing efforts, but that 2004 finals could've been a lot more different if Kobe wasn't trying to prevent Shaq from getting that Finals MVP too

Hardly anyone mentions the fact that with the exception of Glen Rice in 2000, Bryant never had a spot-up ace to kick the ball to for his entire career. Fisher, Horry, and Vujacic all played hot(well, lukewarm usually) or cold in Jackson's scheme. That Kobe ALSO never had a half-decent distributor to initiate the offense with either, is just as nuts! The dude was expected to be both play-maker, spot-up shooter AND the clutch finisher... while keeping The Diesel happy as well. Kind of impossible, when you ponder it. Kobe's cheating in Colorado and Jackson's coaching in 2004 didn't exactly help, either LOL. He should have limited Malone to 28-30 min max per game at that age, and brought Payton (or even Kobe) off the bench more often, so as to smooth out and optimize team chemistry, egos and production.

"Are you gonna fuckin' PAY me now??!!" is what Shaq yelled at team owner Jerry Buss from on-court after a throwdown during a pre-season game during his '04 contract negotiations. Love Shaq for life, but his friction with Jerry Buss and conditioning was seriously underplayed in this video, in favor of far too much media-inflated "feud" hype - hype that was inflated from basic conditions of having (arguably) the 2 most valuable players on the same team at the same time. Every bit of drama gets amplified and dissected.

@LynxStarAuto7 жыл бұрын
Stuff and Thaaangs I agree 100%. I'm a heat fan and Shaq those 3 years in Miami was not the dominant force we all knew him to be. He was outplayed by Ben Wallace in both of those ECF meetings, and in 2006 he missed most of the regular season due to injury. He was also foul prone, and a liability late in games due to hack-a-shaq. He was key in bringing the first banner to Miami, but his decline was evident.

"had shaq applied himself, after chip 3, kobe would had dat 5-peat: GOAT" Kobe played as much of a role in them not winning in 03 and is the biggest reason they lost in 04 to the pistons. Kobe played absolutely horrible that series and was clearly trying to go for finals MVP which made him shoot them out of the series.
@roboninja31945 жыл бұрын
Oh so if shaq applied himself kobe would have the 5 peat huh? So shaq applying himself=kobe legacy? My god are every one of you kobe fanbois actually this stupid? W/out shaq kobe would have 2 rings. But yep shaq needed to apply himself, smh. Remember kobe never won a ring w/out phil jackson either. With shaq/phil 5 rings. W/out shaq/phil 0 rings. That says it all. Also remember how kobe's contract killed the lakers the last few years he was there. Compared to the athletes like brady who has repeatedly taken less so the team could get better players to win. That was another reason kobe wanted shaq gone, money. He knew he could not get a max deal with shaq there. And even after shaq was gone he acted like a child when he criticized the lakers publicly and demanded they trade him in 2006. Yep sounds like a great leader to me. Dude has been nothing but a selfish me 1st shoot 1st player his entire career. Not to mention his awful field goal % and player efficiency, especially when compared to other great players. But i am sure those facts about his stats don't matter right? This is what i mean about kobe fanbois, they don't know anything about basketball.

Shaq openly admitted to not liking when Penny Hardaway became popular and excelled while in Orlando because he wanted it to be HIS team. A wedge had been driven between them too but not on the level of Shaq and Kobe's. Many players that have played with Kobe talk about how he was a difficult teammate. If the Lakers won but Kobe had a bad game he would get angry at them for celebrating which other players have attested to. Years after Shaq left Kobe immediately said "I have more championship rings than Shaq" after winning his last Finals appearance. Both were great players but nobody else was allowed to grow if they played alongside either of the two due to their egos. Great players but bad teammates.

You pretty much nail this. You DO ask for other possible contributing factors. Here's one.The 2004 Finals. Sure Karl was out (injured); sure Payton season-long wouldn't accept being 3rd-4th fiddle like he should have; but the Lakers still should have beaten the Pistons. ALL they had to do was exactly what they did every series up until then: go INSIDE-OUT; go into Shaq virtually every time. Shaq would have either fouled Ben Wallace out or forced the Pistons to double-team him all game long. Either way, this would have allowed Kobe to go ballistic. I loved both of them; but Kobe a tiny bit more. But in THIS case, that Finals defeat, IMO, is ALL on Kobe. Now, I DO understand that Kobe's righteous frustrations with Shaq's lacsadaisical attitude towards his conditioning and all the other things you mentioned contributed to Kobe finally having enough of Shaq getting too much credit. So then, here's the next factor: If PJax has been a better personnel manager (or if Jerry West had still been around with the almost unlimited respect he had from both players) - what otherwise, in hindsight, seemed inevitable, their break-up - should have and could have EASILY been averted. All that really needed to be pointed out was that IF ONLY they co-operated together, they'd have extremely high odds to get to as many as 10 Finals with perhaps 8 Rings (with the first 4 fMVPs for Shaq; and the 2nd set of 4 fMVPs for Kobe). This would have come close to guaranteeing that the GOAT discussion would have been reduced down to: Shaq or Kobe for GOAT. What FOOLS!
@deric85 жыл бұрын
Are you kidding me, Detroit's defense was about stopping everyone else except Shaq, pretty much what every team did before winning his rings. Game 1 of that series was perfect example of why that didn't work because once a number of Shaq's inside shots don't fall and the outside shooting faltered Detroit was in control. The key adjustment that Phil Jackson and the Lakers did not make in that series offensively was pushing up the tempo to prevent Detroit's 3/4 court presses and traps to slow the ball down to prevent Shaq from getting in position which prevented the Inside-Out game to the outside and mid range shooters. This is the very thing San Antonio did the next year to beat Detroit. It worked for the Lakers Game 2 for the key spurt that got the Lakers the win, it would have worked the entire series couple this with GPayton not excepting a bench role like he should he done here and not allowing Fisher to start the games which would have forced Chauncey Billups to play both ends which would have lowered his point production.

You know, I could honestly see how after you’ve won three titles with somebody you aren’t as motivated to keep winning the same way. Like for me if I beat somebody 3 games in a row at something I don’t try as hard after. It’s not surprising that they wanted to see if they could win without each ither

Enjoyed the insight offered in the video. I believe the following was part of the reason as well. I believe that the main reason that they both put up with one another was that Jerry West helped them understand that they needed one another. When Jerry West left the organization, there was not a person that both respected enough to really listen to about their relationship. At the very end, Mitch Kupchak (sorry if spelling is wrong), who took the role of GM after West, spoke in the press about doing whatever it took to keep Kobe, and was ambivalent about Shaq. Not long after that, Shaq demanded to be traded. I believe they could have won 2-3 more championships. Sadly, the role of Shaq and Wade was very similar to the role that Shaq and Kobe could have had in LA. In the end, probable Laker championships went to other teams.

+Anton Burrell From what I understood West was a big influence on Shaq, but it was really Phil's job in actually getting them to work together (he didn't stop them from taking shots at each other obviously )

also important to note SHAQ had alpha problems with penny

I've heard, gotta look into that.

Joshua James Was looking for someone to mention this. Penny was a beta and Shaq still had insecurities, especially when the Lil' Penny commercials aired. To publicly take shots at the guy who he wanted drafted simply on the basis that he was jealous due to the notoriety Penny had deservingly recieved says a lot about him. He tried vieling it under his "playing around" antics but that came off as petty, considering the guy was carrying his team and kept them competitive while Shaq was out. I think the blow over that occurred in Orlando during that time wasn't able to happen in LA because of Kobe being an alpha as well. I love both players, flaws included, but after that 30 for 30 I started seeing Shaq a little differently, especially in regards to the duo break up.

You forgot to mention during the rape case when Kobe got in the car . He said I should have paid like Shaq did . If true that would explain why he did not support him during it .
@christinacumba7877 жыл бұрын
Kobe snitching on Karl Malone and Shaq most definitely caused huge problems. Kobe going into a meeting and saying he would not say anything about Shaq in the media anymore and then leaving that meeting and going straight to the media to call Shaq fat and out of shape probably caused some issues as well. Both players got petty, no doubt. Leaving things like what Kobe said about Shaq and Karl paying women to stay quiet out of this video hurts the credibility but not enough for me to hate the creator.

Not if you live in LA. It was major news the moment he said it. Regardless, it was a major reason for Shaq not giving Kobe support during the trial.

These two have buried the hatchet. Kobe's gone on to say that Shaq was one of the most dominant big men ever. And Shaq has even gone on to say that He thinks Kobe is the greatest laker (which is really high praise considering he elevated Kobe over Kareem and magic) and that Kobe was better than Lebron. But you still gotta wonder what would have happened if Kobe and Shaq got along better during the 04 Finals and Malone didn't get hurt during the Playoffs.

I'm sorry I love Shaq but back then he was a diva and had the wrong people in his ear. His Situation with Kobe was the same issues he had with Penny in Orlando, period. He wanted all the focus on him. That Orlando team was in line to be something special and Penny wouldn't have had to carry that team on his back alone, which would have lead to him possibly not being injured as much. Hardaway's potential was on another level had he not got hurt.

It wasn't just Shaq and Kobe. Malone played a part too, Kobe stated many times that Malobe tried hitting on his wife. Further Jackson wasn't exactly helping either. Kobe also stated on many times that he and both Shaq were tired of his antics at times. I believe a video somewhere on ESPN explains this. Just look for it

The Kobe & Shaq feud is one of my favorite topics I`ll do on here. I had this planned back in August but it got pushed aside. If anything, I hope people come away enlightened on the fact that it's not either of their faults alone that the duo didn't finish what it could do; rather it was the actions of both. This was all late, but one interesting thing occurred during the Shaq and Kobe era. In 1999, (before the 3-peat happen) the Lakers decided to bring in Dennis Rodman. For almost the entire 1998-'99 season, the Lakers had a big three of Shaq/Kobe/Rodman. Sadly, the Lakers cut Rodman after 23 games due to his bizarre behavior. One of the reasons on why he wanted to leave the Lakers was because he couldn't deal with Shaq and Kobe fighting all the time. So you can say that their breakup was bound to happen (even back in 1999). I still wounder to this day what could've happen had Rodman stayed with the Lakers. He could've had 8 championship rings. But, yea that's something I bet little know. It's pretty interesting to me tho.
