I totally get it. I suppressed my southern accent at an early age. Even the child version of me thought all the hicks I grew up around sounded dumb as hell with the way they speak. Naturally, that extended to thinking that I also sounded stupid because I sounded just like them. Now the accent only gets out when I'm excited or surprised. As far as I can tell, it doesn't really have to do with media portrayals as much as the sheer concentration of anti-intellectual religious zealots in the Bible belt.

The Southern accent is very British that's why we use words like yonder and I myself and am mostly of English ancestory but my family has actually lived in the new world since the 1650s so way earlier that most who migrated to the South "Southeastern United States". I am from Georgia and Kyle is really talking about an unprofessional backwoods southern accent which isn't that bad but to each their own. Yankees don't sound necessarily proper either. The slow southern draw originally came from a parasite I think or something like that. So it wasn't natural to talk that slow and not everyone sounds like that especially today with modern medicine and clean water.
@johnromero63152 жыл бұрын
We did have a massive problem with hookworms in the past down here in the south, but I can't find anything that suggests that they're responsible for the typical southern drawl. They are responsible for the general idea that all southerners are dumb and lazy, though.

I'm Italian (born and raised in Italy, not someone from New Jersey), since i was a kid i trained myself to speak with an American accent (i can also do a british accent, but after going to the UK for years i started to dislike British culture a little bit) because i can't stand speaking English with an Italian accent. My biggest pet peeve is hearing an Italian speaking English, i just can't stand it. Most foreigners like that accent but i don't. When i hear an Italian speak with a thick accent it makes me think that I'm dealing with some ignorant peasant rube that lives in the countryside, that can't speak English at all. Call me smug or arrogant, but I've heard so much bad English that i just die inside when i hear it.

Most Californians don't speak with an accent, only the dumb and teens speak with that "surfer" accent. We do say like too much though
@wolowolo61792 жыл бұрын
I would disagree. I think the Californian accent is seen as neutral due to our own cultural dominance. Being a media capital of the world, one of which only Bollywood and Hong Kong can rival is a huge deal. I've gone into the phonetic breakdowns of my own Californian accent and found qualities tide directly to my region 2 hours east of LA. For instance, with the word "Please", Most people within the direct vicinity of LA may go towards [pʰli:z. I found my pronunciation tends more to [pʰli:s which is something found in people sampled from the area. People south of LA towards Oceanside of been sample to pronounce it as pli:z. So our neutrality comes mostly from our LAs dominance in media, but the representation isn't as true as many might think.

You have it more than you know, one easy example would be how you naturally pronounce a minor t in a word like “Santa” youll say it as “Sanna” as in “Sanna Monica.” A less obvious one being “Huntington Beach” youll say it as “Hunnington.” Even further, the NorCal accent is differnet from the SoCal accent which is different from the Central Accent. Its also worth noting that you dont know you have an accent because the vast majority of people living in California, if theyre not immigrants, are born and raised in California and we all have the accent.
