The reason his light saber is distorted and has the cross guards is because the crystal he uses is cracked and it's an ancient design made using modern tech. The cracked focusing crystal makes the energy distorted and requires the guards as vents or else it would explode.

A crossguard on a lightsaber is useless. Crossguards are to stop a deflected or blocked blade from slipping into your hands. Lightsabers bind on contact so slipping is impossible.

In actual Star Wars lore, the reason for these crossguards is because the Kyber crystal is cracked, which produces the more wild look to the blade, but the energy can't be properly contained, so two vents were added for the energy and strategically placed for protection.

Yes an unstable crystal. Also his light saber is from an ancient design which needed the two vents in order to function properly (the vents weren't just because of the unstable crystal). In the second season of Star Wars Rebels they come across a very old sith temple and find a light saber with the very same design which they activate briefly before it fails (since it is so old) and it doesn't use an unstable crystal.

KYLO REN'S LIGHTSABER'S BACKSTORY: Kylo Ren's lightsaber is serrated and crackles because with the absence of many lightsaber crystals, Kylo had to settle for one cracked in half. HOWEVER, this only makes the lightsaber MORE POWERFUL, as it becomes unstable and uncontrollable. THE REASON FOR THE CROSSGUARDS WAS NOT INTENTIONAL. The crystal generated so much power, Kylo's saber needed extra ventilation, so he decided to make CROSSGUARDS. Kylo's lightsaber was made crudely and based off of an old design of a lightsaber created to combat lightsaber 'stalemates' where both blades are pressed hard against each other. And there ya go.

It's from interviews with the developers as well as common knowledge. Other characters in the Star Wars universe, maybe not the movies but other outlets, have similar serrated blades. Sith lightsaber crystals create a serrated effect if used wrong.

i think kylo rens blade is unstable because of the 3 bades due to it having to direct 3 diffrent blades of energy, insteand of just 1 stong blade similar to the movies. in rebels ezra has a lightsaber that can shoot balls of energys, but need s to shut off the blade to do so (and the energy ball ends up being larger than the hole it shoots from after expanding or whatever energy does). the crystal a lightsaber is rather unstable, in the clone wars and rebels you see examples of this. in the clone wars a young padawan who builds their lightsaber must build it in a certain way or it could explode in their hands, in rebels once they blow up a ship carrying a kyber crystal of unknown size is destoryed there is a large energy blast that nearly destroys the ghost. but hey, thats just my idea and this phrase is hopefuly not copyrighted for theories, a movie theories

you can see that while the main blade itself is unstable, the two exhaust ports look just like flames, there's no form to them, they go everywhere. the exhausts would allow an escape for any "rebounding" energy, it's too unstable to be safely contained by the hilt. shoddy worksmanship by a terrible character.

thats still not the real issue. in most of the swings a cross guard wouldent have done anything to help. i watched the examples in the video (and ignoring the fact that the examples that where not a light saber dual are useless as examples) there was only one that even came close to looking like it may have helped. yes cross guards are fairly useful for steel swords they would not offer very many benefits to something like a light saber, they would pretty much do nothing other than imped so motions of the wielder. cross guards are ment to stop blades that clash from sliding into the hands, so seeing as how light sabers dont slide at all when they clash its kinda just a hindrance. so with that said it is you my friend who seems to be the fucktard.

The design of his lightsaber compliments his stance when using it. When he uses it he places it right in front of him pointing at the opponent. The design would give him the advantage through letting him have the first move. Using this stance will leave the opponent with not many options

+Robert Harden Yes and no. It is really not that hard to use a Katana without your hands sliding around. They tend to be designed with quite a bit of grip on the handle. While the Tsuba (the disk-guard on the katana) does stop your hand from sliding onto the blade, it is also there to provide some degree of hand protection. For example, without the tsuba being there, it would be very easy for an opponent to get into a sword bind and then slide their blade down your blade very quickly and cut your fingers off. With the tsuba there, they would have to pull their blade off of yours first and then cut to your fingers, which gives you more time to react. So the primary purpose is still hand protection. As I've done both Kenjutsu and HEMA before, I can say on no uncertain terms that the longsword/bastard sword/arming sword's cross-guards are a MUCH better form of hand protection. It's just a better design in that regard. But I'd still much rather have the tsuba than nothing in that regard.

Great video. One aspect I was sad to see excluded from your debate was that Kylo uses an UNSTABLE crystal and the "cross guard" is actually a redundancy to expel the extra heated plasma produced as a by-product of using an unstable (cracked) crystal. Otherwise the saber would just blow up within seconds of igniting it and in turn mame, amputate or kill Kylo. Its also the reason it cracks, fizzles, arcs, flares and generally acts very un-lightsaberish. Its in the lore, so not necessarily a scientific strength, but at least something to support your topic.

+One Winged Ice Angel: What's with these fancy-schmancy weeaboo terminologies? Maul's is just a double-bladed lightsaber, which in reality is hard to use (Skallagrim has a video on that topic; watch it). You can't even use staff techniques (or "bo", for the "spell-it-in-Japanese" weeaboos) because your hands can only grip the middle, the hilt. Try switching grip lengths with Maul's lightsaber and you'll slice your fingers off.

The only reason for the crossguards on kylo's lightsaber is because when he bled his kyber crystal in the lightsaber (pouring all your rage and hate into a crystal to turn it to the dark side) it cracked, meaning there is more heat and energy, also creating the fire like effect of the blade, the amount of heat was too much for the single blade, so he added crossguards to vent some of the excess heat.

Because if it were a test of speed they wouldn't allow ships to alter the race course by cutting corners like that. The way I see it the Kessel Run is more of a test of daring and survival, not just the ship, and as such stating "The Millenium Falcon did the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs" is more a testament to Han's skill as a pilot than the ships speed or other abilities. In fact, the reason why the lightsaber has a crossguard, is because the kyber crystal is unstable (or cracked) so it has too much power, and it needs those two guards to vent it or else it would explode.

The crystal is cracked, which explains the unstable nature of it. Also it needs somewhere for the excess energy to go, thus the crossguards. And lastly, the lightsaber casing is made of cortosis or some other saber-blade absorbing material so it won't just get cut during a duel... Excellent explanation guys..

The reason why kylo ren's cross-guards turns on after the actual blade is because those are left over power from the cyber crystal and if there is too much power on a single beam it would explode and so kylo created vents on the sides to release the extra power from the cracked cyber crystal....

There are much bigger issues about the movie to discuss than the lightsaber. Look at starkiller base, did you see how big it was compared to the death star? and the death star took years and huge amounts of resources for the empire to aquire and required the empire to enslave the geonosians to build it. Yet the first order, a shadow of the empire can somehow build something many times bigger than the death star? And then the resistance (why change the name anyway?). They sent 12, thats right 12 x-wings to destroy that base, yet the second death star took the largest fleet the rebelion could put together to destroy. Oh and wouldn't the resistance have more ships to spare than the rebelion did since they should only have grown in power? +Lord Vader A few things here: potential spoiler alert (but since your post is already a spoiler in itself so..) . . . . . . . . . First of all, StarKiller is different from DeathStar. DeathStar is a space station, which require ALOT more effort to build since it need life-support system, room for soldier, controller etc, and especially a powerful enough power core to power that whole thing + the weapon itself. StarKiller on the other hand is a base build on a plannet. It look alot bigger than DeathStar, but in reality the actual size of "StarKiller" is only the base contain the gun and the thing use to suck up the Sun, and they dont have to worry about life support and stuff since it's a livable planet. Second, for all we know, First Order currently own that StarKiller. But I dont recall they ever saying they build it themselves after the previous war. Meaning it could be a project builded as a prototype for the DeathStar by the old, all powerful Empire, or something the Empire plan to build after DeathStar but never got to finish it since they got destroyed by Luke and all, and the First Order only put on the last few touch on it. I however do agree with you that it kinda weird how the "Resistance" is still a "Resistance" after they won the previous war. Princess Leia should become a queen of her own planet or something like that, and should be a prime target for the StarKiller. But well, if Leia decline all of that and live on that base like we saw in the movie, it could be explained that most of their ship/fleet are planned on Republic's planets due to their more advance base/support and also serve as their guardian force, but all got destroyed when Star Killer shot down those planets.

+Anh Minh Le Regarding your last paragraph, they do need to explain it more... but I caught them saying both Resistance, AND Republic in the movie... Here is what I took from that. After the destruction of the second death star the Rebels took control over an area of Imperial controlled space and set up their own political structure that they once again just called "The Republic" and that the First Order took over what was left of Imperial space. I think that the Resistance is a Republic guerilla warfare group behind enemy lines, so to speak, and doing hit and run maneuvers against the First Order to keep them from regaining strength while the Republic bides its time and gathers its own forces for a final showdown for when they can return the whole galaxy to a peaceful Republic.

Further, we do not know what happened during that gap between TFA and ROTJ. There could have been a 30 year war of attrition that whittled down both sides significantly.
