Much has been written and said about Basant; the celebration for the arrival of spring. In the subcontinent it marks harvest, a time of abundance .Over the last few years' cultural activity like kite-flying is what became synonymous with Basant, and with it came its own controversies and critics.

HISTORY about Kite Flying & Basant Festival ↴
In Pakistan, #KiteFlying is often known as #Gudi-Bazi or #Patang-bazi. Although kite flying is a popular #ritual for the celebration of spring festival known as #Jashn-e-Baharaan (lit. Spring Festival) or Basant, kites are flown throughout the year.
#Amritsar, #Lahore, and #Kasur are the traditional areas where kite flying festivals are held.
A popular #BasantMela is held in #Lahore (see Festivals of Lahore). However, the festival has also been traditionally celebrated in areas such as #Sialkot, #Gujranwala and #Gurdaspur.
The #Basant Kite Festival has been a historic spring time kite flying event during the #BasantPanchami festival in the #Punjab region in India and Pakistan.

It falls on Basant, also called Basant #Panchami.
According to the Punjabi calendar it is held on the fifth day of lunar month of Magha (in late January or early February) marking the start of spring.
Kite fighting is a very popular pastime all around Pakistan, but mostly in urban centers across the country (especially Lahore).
The kite fights are at their highest during the spring celebrations and the fighters enjoy competing with rivals to cut-loose the string of the others kite, this is popularly known as "#Pecha".
During the #spring #festival, kite flying competitions are held across the country and the skies are colored with kites. As people cut-loose an opponents kite, shouts of 'Bo kata' ring through the air. They reclaim the kites, after they have been cut-loose, by running after them.
This is a popular ritual especially among the youth (similar to scenes depicted in the Kite Runner which is based in neighboring Afghanistan).
Kites and strings are a big business in the country and many types of strings are used: glass-coated strings, metal strings and tandi. However, kite flying was banned in #Punjab due to motorcyclist deaths caused by glass-coated or metal kite-strings.
#Kup, #Patang, #Guda, and #Nakhlaoo are some of the kites used. They vary in balance, weight and speed.
What is #Kite?
Answer: A kite is a tethered heavier-than-air craft with wing surfaces that react against the air to create lift and drag.
The finest #Chinese #kites are made from split #bamboo (usually golden bamboo), covered with silk, and hand painted.

Kite flying is popular in many #Asian countries, where it often takes the form of " #kitefighting ", in which participants try to snag each other's kites or cut other kites down.
Fighter kites are usually small, flattened diamond-shaped kites made of paper and bamboo. Tails are not used on fighter kites so that agility and maneuverability are not compromised.
These things should be banned totally for peaceful Lahore Basant! Agree??
1 Bullets and tracer bullets fired during celebratory gunfire.
2 Dangerous types of kite strings, such as metal wire, or strings coated in ground glass or metal filings.
3 Electrocutions caused by flying metal wire kites near power lines.
4 Electrocutions caused by people touching power lines while trying to retrieve kites.
5 Falls from rooftops related to flying or trying to retrieve kites.
Another reason cited for the ban was the cost to the electricity power transmission system related to
Shortcircuits from metal kite wires touching power lines
Costs incurred from switching off the power grid to prevent short circuits
Basant is celebrated in Ralwalpindi, Pakistan with the flying of kites.

Basant is our identity and an ancient festival of Pakistan and the earnings were also good! The "Chemical Thread" is the root cause of the ban over the very popular festival! Normal thread is never dangerous "The Cotton Thread" never cuts the skin more than 1 cm and is pretty safe! I am in favor of removing the ban! "I Bow Kataa".

What was Basant... let me explain from a student's point of view. We were students at that time before the Basant Ban: 1. Every final Exam in Pakistan started in the Feb/March, so studies were at full swing at that time 2. The traders/new money all the money type of people of the Mohallah or Street used to put out music on their rooftops at the max and all night. This not only disturbed the elderly, but we were not able to properly study as well. 3. The Chumaroo class has metal wires at the end of the "dour" for the purpose of "lootna". That wire in many cases caused shorts in the transmission lines causing blackouts which again caused issue for students who wanted to study anything. 4. Then the case of "Huawi" firing and chemical "dour" causing significant bloodshed of innocents. We used to stay indoors for 24 hours to avoid this. 5. Every "Changar" type of child knocking your door that you have a stranded kite on the roof, please give it to us. Basant was a hell and I am happy its banned.
